I've been to both summer and winter comiket, and it was so enjoyable it wasn't even funny. It was crowded, hot, stood in line for 3 hours to get in, and loved every second of it.

It's an experience that you can't get anywhere else. Comiket is so much more than just ero doujins. So much music, art, crafts, jewelry, clothes. Hobbie stuff like trains, radios, photography, bikes, anything one could possibly enjoy has some representation.

When I go to comiket, it's to buy physical stuff that can't be acquired elsewhere. I've got these cute 2hu plushies, an engraving of a kancolle. Even an original hand drawn picture board thing of Ruby Rose. I had no clue there was a RWBY doujin scene in japan, but there were several circles with manga and physical goods.

People who think comiket is just porn are mistaken. It's only 90% porn.

Fun experience, highly rated stayed from open to closing everyday.

If you are in tokyo when it's happening, you'd be a fool to miss it

Sure they've got English translations in the phonebook tier comiket book but absolutely none of the actually important shit is explained.

I tried to line up for some artist i enjoyed only to be pushed away by an enormous otaku landwhale working the convention.

I mean, there are explanations, it just that they are in Japanese, as comiket isnt really geared towards baka gaijin. Additionally, japs have a predisposition to conformity, so I think a lot of the time its "follow the leader" which can be hard to understand as a westerner. I recall having no fuckin clue where to line up during the queue to get in, and just having to follow where everyone else was going. With the language barrier it can be difficult to see what the signs says, where what artist is, etc so it helps to do a bit of research. I even had a jap friend tell me a phrase on how to ask to read an artist's work to see if I want to buy it. Most of the time, japs know ahead where the booths they want to visit are. If you notice an artist's twitter or pixiv before and during comiket, they'll have their hall and day location, so most of the time, japs aren't randomly wandering around.

And yeah, the getting pushed around is kinda gonna happen when there's like 400k people shoved into a few halls.

As for the guidebook, it's mostly for finding new stuff or locations of particular artists. If you can read jap, it's pretty self explanatory.

One of the many sites where people can sell digital creative products as a single item, with more leniency towards derivative doujin than most. Different from Patreon and (usually) Pixiv Fanbox and Fantia, which is subscription-based for content. There are other services that could be used (FANZA, BOOTH, Fantia, etc.), and many artists just use one or another, but dlsite is probably the most popular all around. I even saw them at Anime Expo a few years ago. It's also the most likely source for digital reuploads on sites like Sad Panda.

It's been a thing for over a decade, but up until recently it was mainly for artists who sold manga/eromanga/ASMR/writing/etc. as a gig. My sense of it is that circles and doujin artists considered putting their works on such sites to be cheapening the comic market experience, and so would either not use it or only use it for works that were no longer being printed. And there's some truth to that - usually only rather popular artists (who would draw a crowd regardless) offer mail order through Toranoana/Melonbook, so for less popular artists a comic market was a great way to get exposure between one another.
But 2020 came along, and with those markets being increasingly closed artists had to choose between holding off on publishing or going online, and more than a few I follow did exactly that. It seems some are going back to conventions-only while others are continuing to publish online shortly after the event.

I really missed seeing the Comiket photographs, but most artists I'm interested in have created their own online events for sharing and buying merch they've made, if not just partaking in an actual smaller convention.
In a way I guess it's a good thing, more choices for artists to choose where to sell and the smaller conventions are much more niche focused.
