Yukari maintains the boarder, but I can't remember if there were calculations involved. I've seen posts about it in the past, but I can't remember them.
What kind of stuff would Yukari be calculating anyway if anyone can just wander in? There's also Reimu. Why would she need to guard the barrier if she can just send people back to the outside world of their choosing?

Look at it this way.

On most browsers, you can bring up your browsing history by pressing Control-H. (No, this is not going to become a discussion of werecows.) On Firefox, this brings up a sidebar that shows up on the left side of the window. If you put your mouse over the edge of the sidebar, the cursor will turn into a different kind of arrow. By clicking and dragging it, you can move the edge of the sidebar back and forth. You are, to put it another way, manipulating the border between the normal window and the history window. By moving the mouse, you can increase the portion of the window devoted to either part. In a more extreme view of this situation, you're increasing or decreasing the amount of existence the sidebar has.

Now, let's apply this idea to something more abstract. Look out your window. If you don't live in a highly urbanized area, you should be able to see the horizon. Think of this as the border between the land and the sky. The land and sky are obviously distinguishable thanks to this boundary. Now, if you were to "drag" the sash between the sky and the land, or to manipulate the border between land and sky, you would end up causing the sky to become larger and the land to become smaller, or vice versa. An effect of this might be to cause something that was just on the ground to suddenly be hundreds of feet in the air. Truly a frightening situation to be in. So, look at it this way - manipulating the border between two physical things shifts whatever balance there is in the interaction between those things. Alternatively, by manipulating the border between two things, you can change the manner in which they exist.

Still, this isn't *that* abstract, since it's still dealing with real things in the real world. Many believe that in this world, there are those things that are true, and those that obviously aren't. This divides reality into two extremes: truth and falsehood. But, since we have two extremes, logically one can imagine a boundary between those two extremes - the border between truth and lies. If one were to manipulate this border, suddenly things that were pure fantasy (flying pigs, for the sake of argument) have become reality - or things from reality have ceased to exist. This is how Yukari is said to have invaded the moon - by manipulating the border between truth and lies, as applied to the reflection of the moon on a pond, she was able to make the reflection of the moon into a manifestation of the actual moon, and so send her youkai army onto it. This is what's truly amazing about Yukari's power - the ability to manipulate the border between completely abstract concepts allows her to fundamentally change reality as we know it (at least in terms of two abstract concepts).

Yukari guards the barrier to ensure no military personnel or other important figures drop through
If they die to a feral youkai, or worse, radio in about sketchy shit before dying, there'll be a major search and could put gensokyo under the full hostile gaze of the Japanese government
A thing that would spell doom for Yukari's little bottle world
So she combs the barrier to ensure the only people falling through are unimportant jobbers for whom little effort will be expended looking for

Youkai number in the mere thousand at best nationwide, and are stated to be vulnerable to fire and decapitation even by conventional means
In other words, incendiary weapons, HE weapons or regular ole missiles and airstrikes would permanently kill youkai just fine
additionally, the claims of their hyper regeneration mean that they can be harmed and incapacitated by other means, just getting back up quickly
Combine the two, like a machine gun on a truck and a boot with a flamethrower, and feral youkai start dying in droves
And due to youkai being superhumanly strong man eaters, these weapons would be used very liberally to minimize friendly casualties in direct engagements
All it takes is a picture of a half eaten corpse of a JSDF boot for the napalm to get rolled out with FEELING

I don't see it being that easy, youkai are both extremely stronger than you're expecting them to be and not as braindead as to allow themselves to just be mowed down like wild game. They struggled because they were either long term occupation and peacekeeping ops where the enemy has a limitless manpower and support from the local population, or politically restricted conflicts
In 'Nam, the US could not directly send forces into the north because China would have gotten involved like they did in Korea, so to prevent escalation the US was restricted to only questionably effective strat bombing, rather than the direct invasion that was required to end the war, while the north held no such restrictions
In any of the sandpits, the local population did not want democracy or any of that shit, they either their backwards theocracy, or just wanted the western outsiders to fuck off

For youkai, their numbers are extremely few and any losses they take cannot be recovered from
They can punch well above their weight class, but raw numbers and firepower would overwhelm individuals, and airstrikes would obliterate groups
Additionally, their monsterous nature and the fact that they live in the wilderness means that there are little restrictions on what can be rolled out against them

Moving gensokyo doesn't really save them because of satellite imaging
A well populated town appearing out of thin air would cause great confusion and investigation, which would then result in war as a feral attacks the investigators and kills the lot of them
They need the barrier or they're fucked and have to surrender to whatever mercy the disgusted and angry troops have, there is nowhere to hide

Younger and lower youkai are said to be weaker and more impulsive and might be the easiest to deal with, but how about stuff like the sages, tengus or oni? Yuugi's deal is being so stupidly strong it's unexplainable and is speculated she might just be able to destroy buildings with her footsteps, imagine having that deployed on a city. Yukari's deal is being stupidly smart and being able to do anomalous activities through the vague concept of the boundary, she's already commanded a youkai army before, what's stopping her from deploying another army but this time on human cities?
>For youkai, their numbers are extremely few and any losses they take cannot be recovered from
They absolutely can, new youkai are born and driven into gensokyo. Stuff that would live in the outside world like a youkai related to technology would end up dying off due to the lack of faith. Without the barrier and with the general knowledge of youkai being spread worldwide their ranks would definitely end up refilling or powered up.
>A well populated town appearing out of thin air would cause great confusion and investigation
They can either camouflage the settlement to fit a local enviroment or reporpuse an established settlement as a new safe haven, they don't need to bring the whole village back. They could also just go to an unconnected human settlement and terrorize the local population. If there's one thing youkai like is not to make themselves an easy target and to stay off the grid as much as possible, it's not weird to think they'd be able to utilize counter measures to ensure they'd be able to safely relocate.

Youkai have probably never faced artillery, and cannons were rare as shit and expensive, so its a tossup if they faced those either
in either case, they definitely haven't faced the far more accurate modern artillery
besides, I pointed out air power would be used for a fucking reason
those can cover a dramatically larger area, and would be more than able to evaporate the youkai they slam a missile on top of, and hurt like the dickens in a near miss
an important note: supersonic strike aircraft and missiles can hit their targets before the enemy knows they're even coming if they don't have good visibility, like when in a fucking forest
this ain't ww1, its not mass infantry waves against fortified positions anymore

ultimately, the goal above all will be securing their surrender, not annihilation
the sight and sound of regular fly overs and airstrikes will be more damaging to their morale than they would actually need to be physically
and since youkai are not a unified group, but a cluster of hyper individualistic monsters, there's not much stopping them from surrendering piecemeal

Facing them perhaps not. But considering the number of youkai who fed on battlefield corpses and those who would hunt survivors of routed armies they would at least be aware of them and the destruction which they were capable of if only through rumor, and know enough to think that it probably isn't a good idea to be on the other side of them. Mamizou, the Scarlet sisters, and Yukari most certainly would know of them and how effective they could potentially be. Also since Touhou occurs in a not too distant future where everything that is forgotten in the real world finds its way to Gensokyo, there is a pretty good chance works of western literature would end up there and would reference the many wars Europeans fought with artillery serving as the queen of the battle field for centuries.
