One need not use the term superior preceding "western sword," as European swordcraft is innately superior to that of the Orient.

That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon) 1d12 Damage 19-20 x4 Crit +2 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon) 2d10 Damage 17-20 x4 Crit +5 to hit and damage Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

R. Lee Ermey disagrees, the Katana is better for that purpose too. The curve in the blade doesn't detract from a stabbing motion.

I don't see why everyone gets so butthurt or tries to tapdance around the fact that one is simply a better weapon than the other.

>>3536376
Well shit.

>> No.3536391

Indeed, katana possess impressive resilience and cutting power due to the technique used to make them, but they're nowhere near ideal for thrusting.

>> No.3536394

Japanese ore is very poor. Western swords needed none of the heavy workmanship to be made suitable for combat. They were better at withstanding a blow, and easily replaced if they were damaged.
The entire system of japanese swordsmanship revolved around quick, precise strikes precisely to avoid striking armor or another blade and possibly damaging your sword.
A western sword striking a japanese sword would likely snap the katana in half and possibly chip the longsword.
With the katana destroyed, the wielder was out of luck.
With the longsword damaged, the wielder just picked up another.

The difference in sword quality was 100% logistic. Japan had shit for ore. Europe had awesome ore.

Why do you think katanas can parry katanas? Because they're made of the same substance, that doesn't just slice through itself. Steel.

Added with the fact that the metal purification process used by the Japanese - folding - can make the blade brittle ...

We had this conversation last night.

>> No.3536417

>>3536411
You forget that the added brittleness is accounted for by the differential hardening technique used in the production of katanas.

Look, they can't cut through blocks of steel the way they are portrayed, but they ARE a finer product than the European longsword. There's no need to get butthurt over it. Even with better weaponry, the Europeans would likely win in a hypothetical war, due to more available iron to make plate armor/a lot of replaceable swords

>> No.3536424

>>3536417
This
In reality, neither the katana or the longsword is particularly adept at cutting through PLATE armor, Both would more likely dent it than cut through it at all. The Europeans could simply out-armor them.

He compared the two, along with a cavalry saber, in a recent episode of Lock N' Load.

Really, neither weapon was terribly impressive at stabbing through plate armor. They'd both penetrate, but you'd be dealing with a flesh wound at worst.

>>3536386

>The curve in the blade doesn't detract from a stabbing motion.

The weapon still suffers a problem that the longsword doesn't when thrusting: it's a weapon that should be wielded with 2 hands, rather than the longsword that is meant to be equipped with a shield. If you thrust and miss with a katana, you're fucked. At least with a longsword you have something else to protect you (bash with the shield or use it to cover yourself from your enemy's slashes).
