i just watched miku expo, super late to the party. why does the setlist seems to only appeal to people that just got into vocaloid and old fans that never bothered to check even the entire discography of their favorite producer? I'm not saying that they should add songs from producers with fewer fame, but the world is mine is not the only song ryo has ever produced, teo is not the only thing omoi song ever made either. i really get it if this is a physical, paid concert, the last thing you want to do in a paid event is to disappoint your audiences. but this was an online event, distributed for free and backed by fans, surely they could afford to mix the setlist up right? the only time where they tried to make things interesting was when they performed parades by whoo back on 2016, and such thing never happened again ever since. magical mirai setlists are far more interesting.

There are times when YT/Nico rips are better than the album itself. Chinozo's The Deluge is one of the more recent example (Ototoy's release uses a stupidly low loudness level). And yes, YT audio quality since at least 5-6 years ago are really good thanks to them moving to Opus codec.

Back when I used a controller (I've switched to an arcade controller) I didn't use any of the mapping. Shoulder buttons just did arrows, face and arrows as standard. By the time I learned you could map the shoulders to combos I was too used to it.

once anything has been touched with compression there's no going back, it's detectably lossy. youtube rips have gone through multiple generations of lossy compression before you've ever heard it. it was compressed by the author, compressed by youtube, compressed by your downloading program (or rather, re-encapsulated, depending on the method) and compressed again when you transcoded it to mp3. it's bad news no matter how you try to paint it, but the really bad part is the first generation compression from lossless to lossy. most lossy codecs will result in a visibly large cutoff above 16kHz. most equipment (sans inexpensive) can faithfully reproduce frequencies up to 20kHz and beyond which is the upper limit of human hearing, but i don't care, if there are higher frequencies i want those too. the audible difference between these two is subtle but in my experience lossless is always more enjoyable.

those high-shelf cutoffs vary within codecs as well so if i care about what i'm hearing i'm definitely not getting it from some hokey source. really there have been times i've gotten MP3s encoded so badly they had also applied something like a replaygain or normalization filter to the hard-coded audio and the result was a really quiet album with a lot of the original information removed. standard practice collecting public rips it's better to not trust your sources without checking multiple different copies first.

if ripping youtube is your only way to get the music you want this practice is fine, and i even encourage it, but please disclose that the files you share are youtube rips in the metadata, or for the love of fuck don't share them at all.

again, without accusing anyone of anything, please do understand that if you try and go parading around youtube rips as lossless you'll get put in your place really quickly.

when it involves frequencies above your limits of perception it simply becomes a bodily sensation. however subtle this is, it adds to the piece of work and is definitely more appreciable than without.

my source example comes from music that was mastered with really high dynamic range where these subtleties become most apparent. this is also some of my favorite music i've listened to countless times, so the only way i want to experience it is lossless from source. i wouldn't enjoy hearing this off of youtube when i own the CD, simple as.

if the case were to be listening to the compressed/uncompressed differences between some fuckin hardbass track with really poor mastering at -0dB with hard clipping all the way through and miku's blaring autotuned voice all over it then we're dealing with a different problem entirely and method of compression does not really matter if the master audio sounds like shit in the first place.

if we're talking about properly mastered music, yes you should be able to tell the difference between lossless and lossy.

again, hating to be that guy who starts the argument, i'm not pointing fingers at anyone, i just simply want anyone who reads this to take away that the thought "it sounds the same" is hard cope and i encourage you to opt to find the experience you're missing out on given the opportunity.

so when youtube is the only available source of music and you have nothing lossless to compare it to it's simply worth noting that you don't know what you're missing; sure it can still sound great, and i don't have a problem with youtube's compression anymore-- but keep in mind we're merely accepting to take what we can get.

kek, didn't happen to me, blame your record label that provides the audio to YouTube. Pretty sure that means it use different mastering. And yes, opus cut everything above 20khz. Do I care? Well, if you have a set dolphin ears, you should. I don't. So I archive everything into FLAC and use opus 192-256k for my audio player.

The only compression applied by YouTube are only from transcoding now, no weird filters added. And YouTube's current audio normalization settings are applied to your video as you listen to it in the same way ReplayGain does it. So, the ideal way to upload any audio to YouTube is by using lossless audio. Also, Hydrogenaudio's ABX listening test shows that opus 128k are comparable to mp3 vbr v2, so yeah, if you're fussy enough, just don't do it.

The audiophiles that aren't assholes don't really reveal themselves as often (same as other hobbyists). I like listening to Vocaloid music, and especially Miku's voice, with my overpriced headphones, but I'm aware that it barely makes any difference compared to much cheaper equipment, especially with synthetic vocals and instruments that aren't as detailed as the real ones. I'd rather listening to at least 320kbps audio, but if I can only listen to 256kbps from youtube then it's alright.

Yeah, I really hate it when people think you need to use overpriced headphones for 'muh perfect audiophile' moments. Diminishing returns do apply with this hobby. I've been regularly visiting these so called "Audio Meet" myself, and with the advent of chink shits these days, you can reach your peak listening experience already by spending about $100-$300 on headphones/IEMs and another $150-$400 to your audio setup depending on what kind of sound signature you want. But that doesn't mean you can't enjoy cheaper shits too. I'm still regularly use my $10 CLR100 whenever I'm going outsite and I absolutely love it.

Though like they can't tell you you're doing wrong to not seek lossless, it's not fair to say they are wrong. Yeah, I agree and that's fair because that kind of choices will be subjective in the end. And I do prioritize lossless/FLAC for my desktop setup (ATH-MSR7SE w. Topping D10 + JDS Atom) myself whenever possible because I do able to hear a subtle difference from it. And just like you, even if that's the case, I will still listen to lossy sources if it's not possible to buy/find it or if I want to watch the video too.

What I tried to argue here was when anon before you tried to discredit YouTube with unsubstantiated accusations about how it destroys his music. I believe in both subjective and technical measurements, so I won't deny that YouTube is quite stingy with the bitrate and I do want them to deal with it as soon as possible. But please, do a proper research about it first. They won't ruin your audio quality as bad as they did in the past now. Also, I have done ABX tests with some latest codecs available, and I found out that lossy codecs like Opus and AAC are enough for my portable setup (Various IEMs paired with Shanling Q1/xDuoo Link Dongle DAC + Phone) without losing too much of the experience. And thus, just like I said earlier, in the end it's a subjective matter of whether you need it or not.

except most of the example tracks are shit and lack high frequency range that is getting compressed the most notably. And I am using a transparent mastering-grade setup with HEDDphone that I doubt anybody else will use for this purpose let alone for vocaloid songs.
There are tracks that I can tell the difference, but you really need to know how it sounds and what to listen for. Most people don't, that is the point of psychoacoustic compression. At best you can tell that something is different, not pinpoint what is actually wrong.

However, most vocaloid songs are mixed and mastered below average at best so it doesn't really matter in the end. I am actually mad at how bad a lot of popular songs are in this regard. That said, I still download flacs whenever I can for archival purposes and use my own Plex server.

Whisper is less nasal and slightly more hoarse than the original, Dark is less nasal while keeping the softness. I'd say original should have been dark in the first place, and the hoarseness and nasalness achieved by simple tuning (especially since it's very subtle here for different voicebanks).

Since I'd assume they have different recordings, they could work better in different contexts of the same song.
