His excuse was plagiarism but the scene in the anime which he thought plagiarized his work was so generic that it's clear that he was either delusional or plain lying. I think Shinji hated himself more than anything and felt that his life was worthless. Instead of killing himself like a coward he set fire to the studio to kill several others as well, believing that he had nothing left to live for and that he would burn with the flames as well. I feel bad for the guy. He had a shit life but that's obviously not an excuse for what he did.

Naming in Japanese (and Confucian-influenced societies in general) is significantly more uniform than it is in Western societies, at least since the end of Feudalism in the West and the filial traditions it carried.
It's more common to share a personal and family name with many people you've never met in most of East Asia than it is in most of the West, unless one's parents intentionally go for a unique name.

Besides being associated with obnoxious fans, what in the hell did any of the actual staff ever do to warrant this?

It's interesting to note that this stems from Kyoani decision of doing LN contests where (you) might get a chance of getting an animation project of your own creation from one of the most prestigious studios in the country. Aoba retarded ass probably felt ten times the despair of a newfag reading his first netorare doujinshi after he convinced himself that Kyoani was ripping off his trope-filled basic literature, which lead to him doing what he did.

Not trying to say Kyoani staff deserved death anyways over a retarded schizo anyways. I see it more as pure bad luck.

>I have to imagine they were found at least partially liable, right?
Nah. According to a Kyoto fire department official the building didn't need to have sprinklers or indoor fire hydrants under the city's fire code. In fact, KyoAni was found to be complying with all fire safety codes at the time. An inspection made of the bulding in October of 2018 found that there were no issues with Fire Safety protocol. Obviously this is complete bullshit which has lead some people to call for stricter regulations regarding fire safety laws in Japan.
