How do you deal with “reversed” kanji pairs? I know how 栄光/光栄 is infamous, and 理論/論理 is the same deal. What’s your way of dealing with these? I’ve used phonetic mnemonics and it’s gone swimmingly. 栄光 was about the ECHO of past GLORY, while 論理 is about how facts and LOGIC makes you LONELY. You only need one mnemonic to recognize the other, because it’s the one that doesn’t fit the memorized reading. I think it’s a really good method and wanted to share it.

odd. i used to be into japanese/chinese history before i got into learning japanese, and went very deep into both for a while through japanese wikipedia articles and historical manga.
i also read stuff like natsume soseki’s kokoro and dazai’s no longer human translated to english before i read other works by them in japanese.
i even used to read visual novels in english, like fate/stay night and higurashi, before i plunged into them in japanese.
hell, i feel like learning japanese mostly re-asserted many of the convictions i had on what japanese people are like and what japanese culture is like rather than teaching me anything new.

i kinda knew a few japanese words from anime before i started learning japanese, like 戦艦 and 攻撃, so i never really imagined that everything was gonna be weird magical words.
back when i started learning japanese, one of the last anime i watched with english subtitles was sola i think. i remember that i tried picking out every single word i could recognize back then (not that many, in retrospect), and that i ended up just giving up and telling myself “fuck it, the subs are most likely right and there’s no point in trying to understand raw anime since i’m not japanese.”
i still kind of believe that anime is best enjoyed in one’s native language, and that any unnecessary interferences of foreign language words in a translation are merely a distraction for the viewer/listener, even though i only watch anime raw nowadays.

anime subs are almost always “sorta right”. they’re not hyper-literal translations because anything that’s too literal would sound very odd and unpleasant to english speakers, so they usually have to take some liberty with the dialogue so as to not sound completely awful in english.
they’re not always perfectly accurate, but mostly because many jokes and puns are impossible to recover.
