Easy, Hideyoshi writes down what he remembers from the epitaph a week in advance and then attempts to solve it with George as part of a Father-Son bonding exercise, the process speeds up as necessary on the island before the first twilight. George and Hideyoshi are reasonably intelligent and can probably solve it on their own, which avoids the massacre altogether. Once the gold is discovered and Yasu reveals themselves, Hideyoshi adopts a new persona of Blideyoshi and blows George's brains out. The murder game is avoided and Yasu won't continue it, George will have been killed by a non-seperate Hideyoshi persona fulfilling all of the conditions. Now Hideyoshi gets to enjoy Eva's milkers all to himself.

New R07 interview just got released. Just skimming through it he discusses quite a lot and answers some questions in regards to Satoko's character. I haven't read the full thing yet but he seems completely on board with the direction Gou is going so you can't really blame it on Passione's fuck up. He compares showing Satoko's dark side as being similar to Rena or Shion.

Of course it's not Passione's fuck up, he wrote the thing. The only thing we know for sure they messed up was the inclusion of the prison scene that baffled Ryukishi.

That said the manga is different, some scenes are longer and some aren't even in the anime in the first place, so it might be that Passione isn't including some scenes due to time constraints or something. Same thing happened back in the original 2000s Higurashi anime and manga.

Yes, on the surface level it's a twist similar to Rena/Shion having a flipside, but how can you compare what happened to Satoko to anyone except Rika? What problem child, Satoko was growing up just fine despite her depressing circumstances at Lucia, until forced to become a looper. It's like people don't even consider that. Can you even apply human psychology to these inhuman entities not bound by the core of human existence? Wouldn't that also go directly against what the anime is doing by making the witch personalities as distinctly separate as possible, even giving them different eye VFX?

If you're talking about this, the director's comment was that people would feel differently of her after episode 22.
I think it was just in relation to how those 100 years were basically omitted with nothing but le ebin crazy psycho lesbian meme face. That train of thought makes sense from a director's POV because episode 22 could've easily been received badly due to its direction. (Was it rushed? Just poorly planned/executed? Was there a better reason why those 100 years were skipped?) Only episodes 23 and 24 depicted what kind of person Satoko was after becoming a witch; her remaining humanity and deep-seated trauma, the witch-human contrast, her inner rationales, more Eua lying and steering her along.

I think she just planned things in a very roundabout way as to avoid literally anyone to remember her in a bad light. I will never discard that some things might happen accidentally or be out of her control, after all she couldn't predict Teppei's development. It's likely outside her primary goal, some things might happen that she didn't fully plan herself, even if as a character trait that remains on her since original Higurashi, she's very capable at predicting people's behavior.

I don't know if that's gonna happen, but it's likely she'll come to some realization sooner or later that she's done something she wasn't aware of that's gonna break her mind a little bit more. it might even be Rika that has to explain that directly. I do not believe for a second that this series will end up with her remaining a villain, but the problem is that it's a bit too difficult to write her out of that without making it awful and jarring. More jarring even, than episode 22.

I don't really know about that. It's likely, but considering things like not being any sort of communication between Rika and Satoko after doing her time in school prison, Rika and Satoko's fakeness around the club members, how things changed to plain worse in Hinamizawa already and how her finding out about Satoshi was portrayed (if it turns out that he's been cured and out of his coma, and waiting for her, which I really fucking doubt honestly), it's difficult to say.

The overall style is fairly bland and makes the magic scenes later on feel like they're coming out of nowhere. The transition from everyone dying to the first tea party and Beatrice appearing there and the actual conflict starting was handled in a pretty bad way. Satoko's descent into dehumanisation to the point that she no longer fears dying and has become cold and detached from human experience could have been a really cool concept to explore and an actually interesting use of the time loop as a concept, since we never actually see this happen to Rika. You know how audiences love to see villains redeem themselves? Well Mion's the opposite, she's TOO good of a person so my favourite scenes of her are the very very few times where she actually acts genuinely mean. The only ones that come to mind are her being pissy to Tomita and Okamura in Tatarigoroshi-hen and her freaking out against her friends in Matsuribayashi-hen when the Yamainu used Shion as a hostage in the underground chamber. It's really refreshing to see her have SOME attitude every once in a while when she's mostly just a submissive little angel.

Honestly Watadamashi's answer arc is the biggest reason I'm looking forward to Sotsu, because I want to like Mion more and see that she's actually a human being like the other characters beneath that nigh-flawless exterior.

Mion's far from a saint as Meakashi showed. She too coward and timid due to her time as being the unfavorite of the Sonozaki family, and never puts her foot down when it would truly matter. It's part of her character and then there's the fact she hid a body. All of this was explained fairly well despite her not getting a POV arc. Rena herself was a completely flat character until Tsumihoroboshi happened like 5 arcs later.

I don't think every character has to be of mess of a person when Rena, Keiichi, and Shion already have that dynamic covered. So having one character that' is relatively saner than the rest is a good contrast in a franchise like Higurashi. That being said I like the idea of no one being safe from HS, and Mion should be generally resistant. but when she does get it for real she should explode. So I am looking forward to seeing her be a wreck in the Watadamashi answer arc.

Takano is way too sympathetic to be an effective villain. The nature of Higurashi's loops really just compounds that issue further. There comes a point where when in trying to pursue what they've been conditioned to think is character depth, every writer ends up building out their antagonist's sob story to the point where it completely outweighs every other part of the character, even the part where they're doing bad things. It's a trap that western comics fall into all the time.

Takano is more of a capeshit villain, where Satoko is more of a proper villain, in how the writing for Satoko lays out how she's not this inherently evil person, and does it without making the the priority over her being a psycho lesbian with everyone else in the story as her plaything.

Her extreme maturity and assertiveness when acting as the head is anything but timid, especially when see immediately afterwards that she was faking her coldness and "atoned" by deliberately having the same punishment as her sister. At the same time, when she's not acting as the head, her general submissiveness when being with her friends is just another perfect anime girl trait, you know, the bashful, innocent and stuttering kind that gets teased a lot and becomes a nervous wreck when dealing with things related to her love interest. She has both bases covered, serious when it counts and timid when she doesn't have to.

The one time her submissiveness is actually called out is when Rena says in Tsumihoroboshi she didn't try to help Satoshi, and honestly he had become very cold and aggressive during that time and was rejecting all outside help in the first place, kinda like a certain someone else.

I'm not saying that she should go crazy for me to like her more, mind you. One of the non-canon manga that Ryukishi compiled and published alongside others in an anthology book called Kataribanashi has a story called Minaaishi-hen. It's nothing special, pretty mediocre in fact. Very short at 2 chapters of length, Mion doesn't go crazy in it or anything nor does she talk all that much even, she's just slightly more dickish and less submissive than usual in a way that is reminiscent of how she acts in the club games but applied to more serious situations where she'd normally be more timid, and that alone made me like her a lot more.

The sudden speed is an issue because it's an absolutely shit way of expressing good characterisation, Satoko goes from normal to crazy one note insane person in a single episode. We don't see her gradually go crazy and discover that death is meaningless in interesting ways, we see her inflict pain on herself for literally no purpose.
