Not either anon, but I think personal preference makes a lot of difference in this hobby. Some people make the difference between dropping a hundy and a a grand on the slightest change in expression when it comes to their dolls, so it makes sense to me.

ddh09 is also very cute and popular, definitely looks more mature than 06
ddh03 is reliving the ugly DDs of 2005. why
ddh01 is also 2005 ugly, but if you find a modded one thats cool. dont you dare put this head on any body other than mdd or ddp

DDH03 is actually my favorite, which is why I havde banned myself from buying another one. DDH01 and the other MDD sculpts have the most variety in mods since they seem to be the most popular body, and DDH06 appears to be one of, if not the, most popular head for DDs. You'll have plenty of options whichever one you go with.

I hate Smart Dolls but I love the idea of having a doll that doubles as useful, has anyone else made or seen someone else make a USB torso for Dollfie/Obitsu dolls?
I thought about it for my doll but her torso is squishy so I might have to get a different one before cutting out some holes and whatnot. Also would put it in the back for extra Chobits vibes.

Not to my knowledge unfortunately, but I think if you're crafty you could probably mod it yourself to have, idk, a portable charging bank in there with some USB ports. All else fails you get a new torso.

I feel like an actual retard. I have multiple DDf3 bodies. I have had some of them for several years now. But as I sit here, failing to set a pair of legs back onto the hip joint, I am once again forced to reckon with the fact that to this day I have never actually gotten the god damn legs to stay in place. Every time I think I do, I start trying to pose them for photos and I realize that nope, they're still not on right. I've watched videos. I've tried different things. I have bruised the palm of my hand on a doll's thigh trying to get them to finally go where I want them to go. I've been told they will audibly click in place when they're put together properly, but I've never gotten them to do it. And I know I'm clearly just doing something wrong, some thing I'm just not getting, but it's frustrating as hell and it means I don't do much with those dolls since I can't really pose them at all. If it wasn't such a pain in the ass I'd literally trade these things away for DD3 bodies at this point. I'm fed up.

Maybe it would help if you removed the legs and the thigh connector from the torso and see how they fit together individually, like seen in pic related?

The tricky part as far as I was always concerned was making sure the joints are in the neutral position before starting. The internal frame of the lower torso isn't held in place by anything, you can unseat it from the crotch of the vinyl and have it come out through one of the thigh holes. This makes it a lot easier to seat one of the legs without the connecting rod first and then slide it back in and reseat it. The inside of the hole the legs connect through has a ridge in the front center. Make sure the ball joint connector on the thigh is positioned to fit into that ridge. After you get the first leg seated on the ridge, put the frame back into the torso and reseat it in the crotch. Then take the other leg and put the connecting rod in it. This will give you a easier time "threading the needle" to get the other leg into the hole. Vinyl can bend a lot and if you're having a hard time pushing the second leg into place, consider heating it up with a hair dryer. I've never heard a click, but you'll know when they're together and in place. I've built two dolls from scratch doing it this way, and both have never had problems once they were in and seated right. Good luck, and if you get frustrated, take a break and come back to it. Don't Doll Angry.

>> No.33947761

>>33946799
Make sure the inner thigh joint is pushed up towards the pelvis as far as it can be by pushing in the bent knee caps. And then as the other anons said, align the notches, insert one leg, and then use your body to brace everything as you go for the last leg.

Its rough, and I also spent hours

Weird question, I know MSC will fuck things up, but can you dye directly over a company faceup from volks? I'm assuming probably not. What's the best thing to wipe a face with? Thanks!

the basis of this truly is drawing. faceups arent easy by any means but if you can't draw you wont be able to pull off a faceup. painting is the skill set you need on top of that. watercolor pencils arent a good media for faceups because theyre so grainy but worry about that later

wipe this one and try again. try as many times as you want or need. you can keep painting heads but i seriously suggest you practice drawing first

im glad to hear youve brushed this off as a 4chan insult rather than harsh advice

Seconding the assertion that DD faceups are a drawing skill. I can do Super Dollfie-style faceups because they're softer and more painterly (other than lashes, fuuuUUUUck painting lashes), but I really struggle with the line precision of anime faceups. When you buy new DD heads they come packaged with a template so you can plan your lines exactly.

>>33948140
Specific areas I can see for improvement:
- Check your symmetry more carefully. Sometimes when I'm doing itty bitty details garage kits I use thin strips of masking tape as a visual guide when something needs to be at a precise angle, or when I need parallel lines.
- More line taper. The line quality on her left brow is good, so I don't think the limitation is in your materials. If your pencil sharpener can't get you a fine enough point, try filing the leads with fine sandpaper.
- Think about color placement. Why is the shadow of the eye crease brown but the shadow of the mouth crease black? If her cheek blush is a warm pink, would a warm pink for the lip look more natural?

I'm also starting out doing my own faceups, and it's really hard anon! One thing I would recommend is mixing pastel dust (you can shave it off the pastel using a craft knife) mixed well with water, and using that to draw. It's more forgiving than acrylics and can also be blended using a soft brush when dry. You have to layer it up over multiple layers of sealant. You can also use an eraser (I cut mine up so they're tiny pieces with sharp edges) to neaten up the shape of whatever you've drawn when it's dried.

I can sharpen the pencil sharp, but it breaks when i try to apply it to the face, also doesn't hardly make a line, leaves dirty crayon-like stuff behind.
as far as things being even, i didn't try to do the masking thing, just tried free hand. obviously didn't work.

They're custom sculpts only sold by Volks with limited complete dolls. All of the licensed dolls are like that. You can find heads for sale sometimes for a few hundred on Y!AJ or Mandarake. I think a ddh-07 or 09 would be the closest of the regular sculpts.

I don't have a pic on hand but hopefully someone'll know what I mean, does anyone know how nips get that gel teary eyed effect on custom heads? It's often removable which is what I want. I won a head today that I think would fit the teary-eyed look well but I wouldn't want a perma-crying face.

If you keep your standards low and your expectations lower you can snag DDs for 300-400 on ebay or instagram sometimes. It was my gateway into the bigger dolls, and let me tell you, you are going to spend so much more than $1000 dollars... that said you can start with tinies like Azone Pure Neemo or Obitsu (Parabox) girls that can wear Blythe clothes and use Barbie props as a cheaper entry into the hobby. It's where I got started, and I honestly have no real regrets.

Probably the demand. Look into Obitsu/Parabox 40cm bodies though, they're a cheaper option. You will need an adapter to use DD heads on them, but you can easily find them on Y!JA or make your own. The aesthetics aren't quite as cute, but the price is a good trade-off.

It might not even be that for once, 1/4 is just an incredibly popular scale for resin and vinyl collectors alike. Probably because they're easier to manage compared to the bigger 1/3 girls, but aren't as small as the (roughly) barbie-sized 1/6 scale.

That one does look a lot better! It's hard to get non-grainy lines with watercolour pencils. You could also add some dimension to her cheeks by blushing them with pastel? You can use a fluffy brush to blend it in/sometimes I use magic eraser to tone it down if the edges of the blush are too blotchy.

Can you put any head on an MDD body? Or are some heads smaller than others? I'm about to get my first MDD body.

Learn to proxy Taobao or Booth (Booth is the Japanese Etsy equivalent). There are a ton of makers on both that sell what you're looking for.
There are resell shops that sell goods from Taobao and Booth but some require a proxy still.

For Japanese resellers I use fromjapan, they're pretty good and have low fees and easy to work with. I've yet to start shopping from Taobao, but I've heard Buyee is OK and a lot of people recommend Spreenow.
