One Cut of the Dead. I genuinely love this movie. If you haven't seen this I really suggest you go in blind. Don't look anything up or read any synopsis or anything. Just go watch it. I tend to go on binge watches of it every few months. Really fun watch. Also if you haven't I recommend getting the BDMV and watching the full behind the scenes of the initial movie. It's super fucking cool seeing how they managed to pull it all off in one shot of one of the crew members wearing a go pro.
I also checked out uhh crows zero. Not too big of a fan. Unfamiliar with that kind of yakuza/tough school material/movies. It was funny at times but far too long. I found myself getting bored throughout it. Decent action though.

The Korean drama was Hospital Playlist, and I'm also the guy watching the various Satomi Ishihara shows, so I happened to be watching her hospital pharmacist show at the same time. It's just the bad acting and facial expressions, and how Japanese dramas tend to really dumb everything down with cliches and plot devices felt even more apparent while I was watching the two. Don't get me wrong, a lot of Korean drama stuff can be really bad too, but Hospital Playlist just felt like a really good show overall with solid acting, and plotlines. I'd recommend giving it a chance unless you have some kind of bias against Korean media.

Just look at it. It's like every time she has something good the follow ups are weak. See Nodame which was hugely popular role then ended with nothing much later. She was praised for her acting in Last Friends which amounted to nothing again. It's like her agency don't let her try more challenging work. I'm not even saying she has to take on ''adult'' roles. Look at Aoi Yu, she kept pretty PG but still had tons of good stuff.

I also recommend Saka no Tochu no Ie, strongly. It was easily one of the best things from 2019. I watched fearing that it would drop the ball hard when the convicted mother finally were allowed to talk during the trial because IMO, Jdramas have a serious problem with monologues and speeches. They 99% times feel incoherent or contradictory or miss the whole point that the story should be talking about, but this one avoided this problem, it actually satisfied me.
It's a very good story with good acting, it's about the place and role of women in japanese society and one of the good ones about this issue.
Only problem is that it made me wait anxiously for Kou Shibasaki's next role and it was puke inducing garbage (35sai no Shoujo).
Yuki Sakurai fared much better and I recommend her subsequent drama "Dakara Watashi wa Oshimashita" (it's like the last year anime "If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die" but without the delirious yuri googles).
And while I'm still at it, "Love and Fortune" is also a good recommendation to fit here.

Mainly the fight scene at the end. It felt like a James Bond movie where no one knows what they're doing except the protagonist. Just didn't look very well done. I would have much preferred the tone not shift from psychological drama to action. I understand the reasoning though, it just didn't work for me. I also didn't care for the mustache twirling antics of the first two Iyi retainers whom he fought. Seemed one-dimensional but that's a minor complaint and again, I can see why they chose that direction. Ultimately the pacing in the second half and the plot decisions I don't think lived up to the first half.
I don't mean to be disparaging, most of it was very good. Especially around the middle when the twist starts to creep in. Easy to see why it's a favorite

It's still psychological and the protagonist "knew what he was doing" because he was the only with actual fighting experience. The others are all tittles and honors with no achievements.

>> No.33442873

>>33442277
>The others are all tittles and honors with no achievements.
Perhaps I missed it but I don't recall it being mentioned that none of the Iyi retainers present had fighting experience. Clearly the protagonist was meant to be an extraordinarily talented person, but my assumption based on the time period presented was that the people he was faced against at the end were at least normally trained samurai who should have displayed more discipline and wherewithal than they did in that scene and even a talented person can only do so much against a horde of normal people. The three he had duels with were supposed to have been particularly talented, at least for the Iyi, for their experience, from what I understood in the film and they are portrayed decently as such.
From a narrative standpoint I see what you're saying and that is certainly in line with the argument that they weren't true samurai to begin with but it also seems like a bit of an overly convenient contrivance that actually underserves the argument, overall.

Funny coincidence, that I watched two movies in sequence with female characters with a bad left arm. First one was Banka (Northern Elegy) directed by Heinosuke Gosho from 1957. I watched just to see Mieko Takamine and while it was interesting I don't have much desire to talk about. The other movie is Fusen (The Balloon) directed by Yuzo Kawashima with script by the always interesting Shohei Imamura from 1956. Both are starred by Masayuki Mori.
Despite the woman with the bad arm being the protagonist on the first movie, her bad arm didn't had much relevance to the plot. On the second movie despite not being the protagonist the bad arm is of much move relevance because it's an integral part of that character. It's not consequence of an unseen unexplained accident, it's consequence of a childhood disease that also left her a bit dumb. She is at the core of the drama and the movie ends with her father succeeding in putting her towards a happier life than what they were living at the beginning.
Good stuff.

Thanks to whoever recommended Dakara Watashi wa Oshimashita. Finally got the time to sit down and watch it. I have never really known about the underground idol scene so it was super interesting to see a work that puts it from their perspective. I honestly have a bad opinion of hardcore fans of person or group. The show genuinely helped me understand these fans and cleared up my thoughts of all of them being psychopaths. Now I know its just a few of them that sour the image of them all. Pretty decent show overall though. The main actress often had overexaggerated reactions which were awkward to watch. But besides that I enjoyed it.

Finish watching this movie and I can recommend. At least I felt it was "good", with complex characters. Izumi Ashikawa's character almost stolen the show for me again.

I know that this movie isn't that old, but at times it reminded me of even older movies from before the war. A few years ago when I had the idea of watching old japanese movies because I liked the ones I had already watched, I started with the oldest I could find from the most known directors. It was a huge surprise to see those boring old directors being all dynamic and experimental during their youths. There's some camera work here that reminded me a bit of that era.
But don't watch for this reason, watch for the characters and while Izumi is cute and funny the best performance was from Yukiko Todoroki. As expected Yûjirô Ishihara is subpar, a shame that he wasn't better in his scenes with her, even so she's still able to shine bright.

It only sounds pretentious if you don't expound upon it and I'd appreciate you doing so. Personally, I find that an essentially-mute protagonist can be a compelling device in media (I very much enjoyed Nishi's silent presence in 'conversations', all smiles, facial tics and head movements) but, when Nakamura, the other police and the yakuza felt kinda like cut-outs existing purely for exposition, it was hard to find much to latch onto for a lot of the film. That's outside of the scenes with his wife, which were touching moments of one deeply emotionally-damaged individual reaching out to another and experiencing some cathartic moments of lightness together, and I loved his incidental 'friendship' with the junkyard owner. The film seemed to be dropping hints that there was more of a story there with Hirobe and his wife and I felt that might've led me to be more invested in his character, though the pathos interlaced in his artistic awakening was undeniably affecting. Also, I was disappointed when it looked as if the film was about to lend a few more facets to the perpetrator of the fateful incident, but stopped short of delivering that characterisation.
Visually, I loved it, along with the detached, almost dreamlike quality of the violence. I really enjoyed certain characters and moments, but many others felt a little flat and by-numbers. Easily at least a 3.5/5 in my book, but perhaps I need to give it some more of my time to appreciate why it got so many 5-star reviews (even if star ratings are arbitrary, subjective things of questionable worth either way, I guess).
>>33522783

>I was disappointed when it looked as if the film was about to lend a few more facets to the perpetrator of the fateful incident, but stopped short of delivering that characterisation.
My impression is that the film is telling you that yeah, shit happens in life. Things can go so south on a dime and could affect people for the rest of their lives. It didn't focus much on the perpetrator because he's a simple plot device that moves the story forward.

>The film seemed to be dropping hints that there was more of a story there with Hirobe and his wife and I felt that might've led me to be more invested in his character.
As for that, i think it's intentionally framed that way. Like i said it's the life changing consequences that Horibe faced from that event in the film onward. From the hard ass cop with crass character and the illusion of a harmonious family in the beginning scenes, reduced to such a depressing state for the rest of the film. They're also a simple plot device for the character to grow. He's left behind after depending on them so much, he started to discover his other reliance, which is painting.

>> No.33533846

>>33531299
Yeah, I can appreciate that. I think I just got the impression from things like the junkyard owner and the hapless other motorist that Kitano wanted to portray a living, breathing world - something which I think he definitely achieved but which then felt at odds with some of the other, ostensibly 'more important' characters coming across a bit like mere devices.
Kitano's clearly a man of prodigious and multifaceted talent, though, and I'm quite excited about checking out his other films.
