Hey /jp/

So I'm leaving for Japan in 10 days, gonna be studying there for a year (living in Tokyo)
So any useful tips/things I should know? I speak only very basic Japanese, and have very limited kanji knowledge. I'll be living with a host family.

The host family in question will lock you up and slowly brainwash you, while using drugs to physically turn you into a Japanese girl. Months later you'll only know yourself as the daughter of that family. It's the government plan to stave off decreasing birth rates.

You have to spend some time inside and on /jp/ every now and then. It's too expensive to go somewhere every day. I'm here for a year as well, and I've spent about $300 this week transporting my luggage, buying a train pass, and taking day trips/eating. Shit can get expensive, and you hardly realize it since you're juggling all those coins.

Yeah money's a bit of an issue, I'm hoping to do some conversational English tutoring to cover my spendings, but I need to apply for a work permit right?
Also can someone explain how the commuters pass thing works? I need to get one when I'm there, does the pass cover only the route I choose (from one station to another) or is it like I can take any trains within a certain lin?

How fast can I expect to pick up the language? I've studied Japanese for a couple terms last year, but none since May, aside from watching anime.. Anything kanji is completely lost for me and I can't see myself possibly learning enough so I could even understand half the stuff that's on, say, a website.
I'll be taking a japanese course (just a regular one, not intensive) and living with a family though.. I really hope to be able to at least read raw mangas/VN's and understand raw anime as soon as possible.

How old are you? I think that's only for people with college degrees at this point.

>Also can someone explain how the commuters pass thing works?
You prove that you are a student of a university with an ID card, then you pre-pay (1, 3, or 6 months) the ticket fee for your daily commute at a discounted rate, and it gets printed on your card. Then, as long as you get on/off along the route between point A and B, it's "free." So you can use it to your advantage.

If you want to learn as effectively as possible you can either go for the Pimsleur CDs for basic speech/listening comprehension, or Heisig's Remembering the kanji for, well kanji. The latter won't teach you a single word of Japanese though, and will take at least a few months to complete, but it's worth it if you want to read anything raw as fast as possible. You can find all this shit on most torrent trackers.

20, I've heard of some exchange students who did just casual kind of things (like putting up some info on a website, and then people would contact you and you meet them at a starbucks or something and just talk to them in english for an hour)

the train thing sounds like a shitty deal, since my route is just in between the bigger stations on the Yamanote..

I never took the chance myself, but here's the advice my teacher gave me.

Remember to shower BEFORE getting in the bath. They'll get fucking pissed if you get in the bath dirty.
You should know this if you're Asian - don't enter past the genkan with your shoes on.
The bathroom has a seperate pair of slippers
They do know some amount of english, but hardly enough to strike a real conversation. But you're in fucking Japan, use the chance to build your skills.
Once again, if you really want to improve your Japanese you need to make a fucking effort. Avoid making friends that only speak English (other homestay students, American transfer students, etc.).
As for Kanji, you're not going to learn that through conversation. You'll learn new words that's for sure. But you'll be illiterate unless you do some studying.

Those actually exist, as part of the whole Japanese cram-everything-into-as-small-a-space-as-possible aesthetic. Saves a bit of water, as the sink drains into the tank so the waste water can be used for flushing.

If a house has multiple bathrooms, typically the outlets are daisy-chained together, and only the outlet that hooks up to the breaker panel has a GFCI (so you only need to install one, but all the outlets will get cut off if any one of them has a short).
