I bought a set when I visited China many years ago. I recently decided to dig it out after local anime club played some episodes of Akagi. I found 4 Winds Mah Jong program online so I could try to learn the basic game in a heckle-free environment ;) it has a ton of rulesets built in, it has Japanese Modern, Classical and Transitional, along with about 20 others, and you can even make a custom ruleset. What ruleset is used in places like Tenhou, and how about in Akagi and Saki, in case I wanted to familiarize with the rules to actually follow what's going on in those games?

How does playing with yamiten improve your mahjong skills?
Opening your hand with tanyao, sanshoku, hon itsu, chin itsu and yakuhai is a big part if the game.
The important thing about mahjong is learning when to riichii or opening your hand.

I think everyone should learn to yamiten. I rage everytime I play into someone else yamiten with 3concealed doras.
