I suck terribly at these games...but why do I love them so much!?

Because you deluded yourself into thinking they're better and more interesting than other similar games thanks to its sprawling albeit niche community.

Just kidding.

>> No.3219929

How much practice did it take you guys to become good at these games?

I've been playing Touhou games since just last Tuesday, I've beaten 6-9 on easy, 8 was 1cc'd, but I can't get past like level 5 on most of them on higher levels. I want to see all the cool endings.

>> No.3219961

Because Touhou is, may it be a lot of memorization or not, one of the last franchises where you don't get spoonfed achievements and success. If it wasn't for the anime'ish art it could be stuff that baffles parents and friends. But then again, without the cute girls we wouldn't play it.

>> No.3219971

>>3219961

Incorrect - I'd still play it, although the fanart wouldn't be nearly as awesome.

/rethinks this

Maybe it would.

When I first started EoSD (my first) I wasn't able to get past Patchy. Can't recall if that was with or without continues. Probably took 4-5 months to 1cc it.

>> No.3220010

It's more a sad story that because of the cute girls, it doesn't baffle parents and friends. They would all just focus on your powerlevel and laugh/dissapoint.

Wow this makes me feel a lot better.

I played for like 4 hours every day till I got past patchy on normal, but I'm not going to do that anymore because after playing so long, and going back to the internet, the words on my computer screen appeared to be sliding downwards and fanning out in bullet patterns. Also every time I closed my eyes I would see quick flashes of light patterns.

Two years for low end Lunatic level, but I play very infrequently (maybe 2 hours per week. ) and have friends who could handle Hard with a few hours everyday for a week.

Absurdly difficult, the difficulty you are confident at will grind your bones and crush your soul.

Until you get used to it, where it becomes, while still very difficult, at least tolerable.

>>3220031
Touhou is not a game you will do well when you first start. I'm sure there are exceptions, but you should not be disheartened if you get raped completely after the end of stage 2. In most games stages 1 and 2 are very easy, so if you have lots of trouble there you probably won't ever be able to 1cc normal. It's perfectly normal to get raped by the stage 4 boss though, so don't feel bad if you can get that far at least.

>> No.3220314

>>3220127
mm yeah stage 4 on PCB beat the shit out of me, so did 5

>> No.3220396

>>3220314
Yep. I can 1cc PCB (if I'm fairly lucky) and both stages kill me several times. PCB Stage 4 more than the prismrivers though, at least if I'm using Reimu. That's another thing, unless you become insanely good, you're still going to die. Part of getting better at the game is learning when you're going to die - if you know you're going to die, you can usually bomb to avoid it. Doing it that way is better than just panic bombing, e.g. "oh, patchy is using Water Sign - Princess Undine. Bomb."

Ok... its easy but the last boss (Kanako) is fucking hard.

After I downloaded MoF, I played it for a bit testing out the character types not getting past stage four. After several months of not playing the game and focusing on the other touhous I 1cc it on my first try with MarisaA. On another 1cc I got through Kanako with no lives left. MoF is really easy.

>> No.3220635

my 3 problems with kanako are her first attack, her spellcard with the knives that are aimed at you and spread out as you try to find a path through the round bullets, and MoF

Eirin's last card is stupidly easy as Marisa or Youmu. Kaguya's isn't too terrible either, though I still get wrecked by it sometimes

>> No.3220685

>>3220660
The same reason Reimu/Marisa is harder than Reisen and Sakuya seems preferable to Patchouli depending on your character type.

>> No.3220691

>>3220635
Her opening attack is weak as hell. I don't know what your problem is. IIRC it's just bullets coming straight out from her with nothing special about them.

knives spellcard is a pain. Find a good replay. Failing that, bomb. You should be able to destroy it after just one bomb.

MoF isn't hard, it's just a goddamn battle of attrition. If you can dodge the first round you can dodge them all; just don't screw up. And for the love of god do not bomb, it won't do anything to clear bullets and you'll just lose damage making it last even LONGER

>> No.3220854

Okay, I know that some boss patterns are different based on your character or difficulty level. Every time I play Perfect Cherry Blossom I choose normal Sakuya A, and when I fight the Prism River Sisters everything is the same. The other day, though, I got a different set of attacks from them in the middle of the fight. What determines which attacks they use?

>> No.3220867

>>3220854
The first spellcard where all three of them are on screen, you face the one you deal more damage to afterwords.

>> No.3220885

>>3220854
Whichever sister you do the most damage to during Phantom Dinning / Live Poltergeist is the one you face solo next.

>> No.3220886

>>3220854
Which prism river you face is what determines the attack.
Reimu opens with Lyrica
Marisa opens with Lunasa
Sakuya opens with Merlin.
Then they have the first spellcard with all 3. Whichever took the most damage will stick around, the other two fly off. The one you opened with will always be in the middle of this spellcard, so if you don't intentionally focus on another sister you'll probably have the same one again. Once the other two fly off you get a round of standard attacks and then a solo spellcard. Then two more spellcards with all three.

>> No.3220896

>>3220691
>Do not bomb

I thought bombing fifty times every run to clear difficulties way above your head was the entire point of MoF.

>> No.3220951

>>3220867
>>3220885
>>3220886
Thanks, it turns out I accidentally did more damage to one of the other sisters when I used a bomb to survive a stupid mistake.

>> No.3221002

>>3220896
Bombing Kanako's last card will do NOTHING more than lower your power level. Bombs do not do damage on the final spellcard in any game (IIRC), and the already poor bullet clearing size of the MoF bombs is severly reduced in Kanako's card. It may save your life if you were just about to die, but you'll be covered in bullets again after a few seconds.

Plus, this might just be me, but I find bombing disorienting. If a bomb does not clear the screen of bullets, I tend to die as soon as the invulnerability ends. If the screen is cleared it's no problem, but even Reisen has cards that cannot be cleared by bombs.

>> No.3221067

>>3221002
Ah, I misread, thought you were talking about the game in general... Though for last attacks you usually can't help but bomb, and dying gives you 3 power anyway, better to bomb four or five times and shoot back with 3 power after running out of bombs than to die immediately and shoot with full power.

>But then again, without the cute girls we wouldn't play it.

What the fuck? Maybe you wouldn't, but I sure would. I love Gradius, Ikaruga, and the handful of Cave shooters that I have tried, and I would certainly play the Touhou series even if it was only a bunch of spaceships.

>> No.3221177

>>3220691
i dunno, with the first attack it just trips my eyes out and i have to bomb or i get killed by something popping into my blind spot.

>> No.3221186

Hah, I've 1cc'd SA, LLS, PCB, IN, and EoSD (normal). UFO, SoEW, and MS still elude me, although I can get all the way to Shinki before she rapes me.

IN is by far the easiest storymode. Save for that double-teamed crap that Erin and Kaguya pull.

>> No.3221202

>>3221122
I have likewise tried those games, but can't seem get the feel of spaceship hitboxes and the danmaku in those games takes a rather simple but effective approach, so I like Touhou over them. I'd play it even if it didn't have the characters.
