Only PLA is used for 3D printing kig masks. People have tried other materials with little to no success. The other two materials masks are commonly made out of are PU and FRP. Both are cast and sometimes the base for FRP masks will be molded by hand, completely foregoing any 3D modelling.

There's always horror stories of people trying to print their own kigs, which range from them looking like potatoes, various implosions/explosions, and other headaches.
It's pretty naive for people to try to 'save' money by printing their own kig and expecting it to be even close to that of actual, experienced makers.

PLA also goes from being the material with the worst durability/longevity to 2nd place after FRP if it gets resin-coated. Normally PLA heavily suffers from warping, which causes cracking, print line seperation etc, but a good resin-coat will hold things together far beyond the lifespan of an uncoated PLA mask.

If PLA is the only material worth using, then it can't be too bad to dick around with since PLA is the cheapest anyway. I just wondered if e.g. PETG would be more ruggedized, but if coating it strengthened the PLA, then it's a non-issue. The odds are pretty much proportional to how many different masks you've looked at and studied every detail of. Even better if you've held them in your own two hands and had the chance to look at them from all angles. I'm no expert when it comes to 3D printing (yet), but from what I've heard and read most often PLA is much more reliable to print, and paint takes much more nicely to PLA than it does to PETG - and a good paintjob is very important for any mask that's not already cast-in-color PU.

As for implosions/explosions, PLA is just very susceptible to all sorts of things. Mainly hydrolysis which weakens the material, and temperature changes which induce warping due to the low glass transition temperature. An uncoated PLA mask subjected to improper storage can die within a year or even months just from relative humidity and seasonal temperature changes. Most common are paint cracks, print line seperation, and general material decay, especially at the rim/edge of the mask.

If you're able to, invest in a backdrop. You can also search for DIY backdrop ideas - some people use string lights or tinsel to fancy up their backgrounds. Make sure you have good lighting like a seperate ring light or flood light.

Other than that it's really just about finding the right pose and angle which may take a while if your self shooting. Take a bunch of photos and then pause after a couple minutes to look at them to see what you like/didn't like. Don't be afraid to use props when you're posing.

Same here. I just take a fuckton of pictures and try lots of different poses and angles so even if 99% of them are shit I still get a few decent ones every time while learning what works and what doesn't.
It's inefficient and random but so far I've learned the following:

>front and profile don't work very well, 3/4 usually looks better
>one lamp is not enough, the more light the better
>don't expect great results using a regular phone camera (or a pro camera unless you know what you're doing I guess), I now understand why good kigu photographers are popular
>pose can make or break a picture, i must learn how to pose
