Which spellcard the character uses is selected before the fight; each character chooses 2 of 6 spellcards, one to use while on the first, white health bar, and one to use while on the second, red health bar.

Use 236D to cast the spellcards after declaring.
You're also invulnerable during a few frames of declaration, IIRC.
