WTF is up with the difficulty of UFO? The first 4 stages are ok but once I get to the 5th one the difficulty skyrockets and all those extra lives I stockpiled by only going for red ones end up not counting for anything.

>> No.3202756

First off, use practice stages. UFO is difficult because it's new, and you need to familiarize yourself with things just like you used to. Beyond that, don't just go for the red ones. Think about the UFO patterns, which ones spawn and when, and make a route. The less UFOs you waste because they didn't change to your color, the better your total stock.

As usual, don't be afraid to bomb, and as usual, try out new characters. Not much left is held to any kind of standard.

>> No.3202762

Curvy lasers.
With hitboxes bigger than they are.

>> No.3202770

UFO is the most difficult Touhou so far. It would be nice if it followed more a theme like in EoSD

>> No.3202783

UFO is only difficult if you can't handle UFO collection. I dunno about 100% capture difficulty yet, feels mostly the same.

>> No.3202784

>touhou game is hard when i get to stage 5
have you ever played a touhou game before?

>> No.3202786

Alright, I give up. Why does everybody keep saying UFO is so hard? Granted, I thought the same at first...but after two or three playthroughs it became one of the EASIEST games in the series. It's just really gimmicky, that's all.

I think you meant SA. It took me two days to 1cc UFO, and at least two or three MONTHES to do the same with SA.

Fuck you, Orin, fuck you.

>> No.3202814

>>3202798
I found Orin quite easy once I noticed all of life's problems can be solved by point blank Alice bombs.

Utsuho and Satori, in turn, are quite annoying when your hitbox is large, though.

>> No.3202831

>>3202797
stage 4 is generally a bitch, but the wall where you run out of lives is always stage 5 boss

>> No.3202844

OP: Which other games have you played? Because Shou isn't any worse than Sakuya or Youmu and is infinitely easier than Orin. By almost any standard, she's mid-tier in difficulty.

>> No.3202846

UFO is only difficult for me because I'm a OCD perfectionist who restarts every time he fucks up a UFO chain. The system drives me batshit.

Though I've been doing nothing recently but practicing stage 6, and I'm super happy with my last playthrough, caught every card but the last one and not a single death the whole stage. I might be ready to attempt a 1cc soon.

>> No.3202886

>>3202786
UFO has more real sight dodging than SA despite its gimmicks, especially if you include trying to get UFOs in difficult stage parts. But yeah easy as hell to simply beat if you can do the collecting.

>> No.3202900

I decided partway through UFO to only go for red/green UFOs and juts bomb the shit out of the stage which in turn lets me pick up more UFOs for more bombing without risk of hitting a bullet behind a powerup or something equally shit.

Then I focus on the bosses, which everyone knows are the only real part of Touhou.

>> No.3202919

SA was the most difficult so far.

>> No.3202920

>>3202844
Orin isn't THAT hard. Not the real boss fight anyway. It's just that her stage + midboss can strip a pile of lives and bombs from you before you even get to her. Once you work out a technique for everything she can be beaten pretty methodically.

>> No.3202950

>>3202920
>Once you work out a technique for everything she can be beaten pretty methodically.

In the time it took me to do that, I 1cc'd MoF and beat its Extra stage.

...maybe I just suck.

>> No.3202984

once again, ZUN makes stage 5 and it's boss harder than the rest of the entire game combined.

I don't like this difficulty curve (if it can even be called that) where I don't get to play the most fun stage most of the time because all the difficulty is packed in the second to last stage.

>> No.3202988

UFO is the hardest touhou, at least for me.
I can't beat it.

MoF is easy to beat though, I got it in only a few tries and I was even shittier back then.

The actual difficulty curve of this game is ridiculous too. Normal is manageable, Hard Kogasa suddenly becomes Stage 4/5 material.

>> No.3203052

UFO's stages are heavily based around using the UFO system to constantly clear bullet spam off the screen. This can get extremely frustrating if you just try to survive/ignore power ups like most people do, because there will eventually be so much shit on the screen it becomes impossible to dodge.

Basically, grab them UFOs. Even if it's R-B-G, it'll clear shit off the screen for you.

That, or practice the spell cards and use your bombs in stage when needed. I had to do this on Hard.

>> No.3203057

I thought UFO was the hardest until I started completely ignoring UFOs past stage 4. Those things cost more lives than they give you.

>> No.3203073

>>3203025
Stage 3 suddenly becomes a nightmare on hard, too. I still haven't captured that left->right->right->left puncher spellcard, and the spammy stage parts are like an unbroken wall of bullets, and it can be hard to time a UFO pop to clear them every time.

I don't get why people fetishize the PC-98s so much. It's not as if they have fond nostalgic memories of playing those games, or as if there's any fan content for them, or as if any of them have more than two lines of backstory. They're just a bunch of random girls with wings that ZUN made up when he was 20.

I'll repost this here since the other thread didn't get much attention, I uploaded this survival run replay for those that are having difficulties:

Marisa A normal run.

Anyway TH12 difficulty is really dependent on the UFO system. If you have no problems collecting them, the game will be quite easy since the spells and stages aren't as hard as previous installments. If you have difficulty with the disks, you will probably have a hard time reaching even Shou.

Well, in normal difficulty I feel like there are no moments in UFO that the bullet spam is as dangerous as the spam after midboss Sakuya on stage 5 or the spam after midboss Orin also on stage 5. What makes you more endangered in UFO is that your eye is trying to keep track of the points, bullets and UFOs. You end up moving your character to places you wouldn't normally go and this might result in a hit.

Normal seems a little easier than usual, but Hard and up throw bullet walls at you constantly. Not complaining, it just feels like it keeps the pressure on much harder than most other games' stages (with notable exceptions of course).
