Did anyone ever wrote about ettiquette with japanese faceup artist? I won heads of yahoo auctions and would like to show them that they arrived safely at my home (once their bodies arrived too), but I'm not sure what is and isn't considered rude. Would posting a pic on twitter with a google/deepl translate text and tagging the artist or their hashtag be okay? Or would it be better if I wrote them a DM?

It was January 7th today, my doll's birthday (counting from the day I got her from the store at least)! My family has humorously toasted this occasion.
I just wanted to express some thanks to this thread and the anons here that were around a year ago: I had a lot of doubts and concerns about how to go about getting a doll or whether I should even do it ("can a retard really own a doll") and some of the anons have helped in convincing me to do so! I wish I was more proactive with taking her outside for photos and trying more things with her hair and clothes and stuffs, but even having her resting on my desk in front of me feels great. And it's all thanks to this thread! Thank you and I hope you will have a wonderful 2021!

ShiNeS Workshop does fantastic faceup and custom work. I'm not detracting from that at all. I have a head from them and I love her. But the eyes they sold over the holidays are honestly one step up from garbage. They're printed on cheap metallic paper, some of which are so low-quality that I can see jagged pixels on the edges, badly cut-out and haphazardly slapped onto completely flat bases, often off-center or at an angle from the other one in the set, and held on with some sealant that appears to be failing, because some of them are already starting to peel off. I have honestly gotten better eyes from melonpan market and that guy makes his out of nail polish. I'm really disappointed about this, and I don't want anyone else to have the same experience if I can help it. ShiNeS is great for faceups, but their eyes can go to hell.

Still not done, but I guess it isn't as bad as I expected, especially considering that I haven't knit anything before last month.
It's definitely too small to go on a ddp body like I intended, but I guess it can look cute on one of my mdds as long as you ignore the fact that it would never be able to close at the front and don't look too closely.

They can, so it can take some balancing. if someone's using one of those saddle stands and supporting the middle with it under the clothes, that could also be an option. counterweighting the stand is also possible (which can be as simple as "put a brick on it"), or magnets could be in play somehow! Why are so many non-asian Dollfie Dream customizers delusional with their prices?

I think it's kind of insane that people are charging upwards to ~80£ just to paint the dang head.

I think you should take a regular, hard look at yahoo auctions and videos of how faceups are made. Some details on my custom heads are so ridiculously precise and small, it makes me wonder how in the world they were able to paint it. 80£ is near to slave labour for the amount of time and skill they spend and the fact that a blank head alone costs 40-100 depending on if they get to snatch one from the volks store before they sell out.
Nevermind some of the popular western faceup artists are asian.

>simple colored lines
I don't mean any offence anon, but I don't think you realize how heavily modded some heads are. Anything with an open mouth was cut open and then filled in with a sculpting medium and painted. Many heads come without eyeholes that the faceup artist has to cut, size, and detail themselves. Anything with pointed ears or other features are crafted by hand in a similar fashion. I've practiced doing my own before, and since I am not an artist, they generally look so bad it's funny (and that's a normal part of progression.) The high-end expensive doll heads are made using expensive, fiddly supplies by people who have done the work to figure out what does and doesn't work to achieve the results they want. When we buy heads, whether it's from Y!JA or somewhere else, we aren't just paying for the lines on 'em. We're paying for the skillset the artist had to build up to put those lines there in the first place.

I don't think you're an asshole, I just feel that you're underestimating how much work goes into these things.

>> No.32176120

>>32175122
Not that anon but I have mixed feelings about the subject. I know several artists who can claim the same with startup costs and skill for something like oil paintings. By comparison then yea face ups are "simple".
It is a niche hobby though, and manufacturers like volks are partly to blame for the artificial scarcity.

If you mean heads like Hatsune Miku or Rise Kujikawa or another "brand-name" Dollfie Dream character, those are usually on a custom head-mold, have a custom face-up, or both in tandem, so they're in demand. Since the only way you can get those specific heads is by getting them from that specific doll, some (like DD Rise) are very expensive. Other heads are indeed artificial scarcity on Volks end -- all the ones limited to Doll Point, for example, are only rare because Volks refuses to sell them outside of their physical retail stores. As a result, anyone who cannot physically drag themselves to Doll Point (99% of people, basically) have to pay the added cost. This goes for "sun skin/tan" Dollfies and their new Cute Male body as well. It sucks, but unless someone can finally convince Volks Japan that their international market is worth selling to directly, that's how it is -- and given how much Japanese collector culture thrives on artificial rarity/scarcity, it's probably not worth it to them to piss off their local buyers.

>> No.32183204

>> No.32183710

>>32183204
Restocks are rare if at all. Their clothing lines are seasonal, and often only available once. There are exceptions, but if you like something, you should get it sooner rather than later. Listen here anon, I get it. Not to get too personal but I was raised by a hoarder so as an adult I'm still learning basic shit like what I need to clean and how much and stuff, shit that embarrasses me to not know already -- but when you grow up in a dysfunctional environment, it leaves its mark, and you can't be blamed for the things you don't know. Cleaning, cooking, and everything else are learned skills and behaviors that we have to practice and work on to improve -- therefore we all suck at them at first, especially picking them up later in life. Sometimes I slip on my own efforts, quarantine has been hard for me and I have backslid on trying to not leave things in piles. Keeping up with everything can feel impossible and overwhelming when things are already difficult in other areas of our life. But I've still made progress in the past, and I'm getting back on the horse in other areas, too. I'm literally a nothing person, so if I can make progress, I have no doubt that everyone here can do it, too. Knowing where to start for me is a big problem because of ADHD that I'm only just getting treated -- I see everything and I can't even begin because it's too overwhelming; what should be obvious to anyone with a functioning brain just isn't for me. But that doesn't mean there aren't ways I can work with that to make things happen, I just have to find them. It can take trial and error, but that's okay. You have nothing to lose from trying, and even if you slip up or make mistakes, you can still try again another day. Be kind to yourself, anon. I know this is 4chan and we're all assholes here, but still. It can start with just cleaning up a special space just for your doll and getting ready to welcome one home. It's worth a shot, right? And I think it's worth it, especially after the last year of global fuckery, to find something that inspires you to get out of bed every day and follow that spark. Whether it's dolls, art, working out, whatever- if it makes it easier for you to be a whole person, then let yourself go for it.

I'd love to see your doll if you ever get one one day.

I really want to get Uzuki on online Dollpa After Sale.

Due to corona there is no sea mail to my euro country (volks sends everything by ems and dhl anyway), and chances that I will get taxed for 1/4 of my doll are super high and I can't find proxy to lower the price on package.
Do you guys think there will be another chance to get her on yahoo or mandarake in reasonable price, after japanese post will get their shit together?
I don't really need her right now, but I really would like to have her secured in some way... I would feel so down if she would be unobtainable or went really high in price after lottery.

Only mix of Surface mail+gift+lowered price description would make me feel safe. And Surface Mail is most important part of that strategy, it almost never gets taxed.
Unfortunately, Japan stopped all surface mail options due to corona... So even proxies can't help much rn.

She has some marbling and other issues with the dye job, but I think that's bound to happen no matter how well you dye something, and you can't tell it when she's clothed. Seeing a dyed doll in person also helps me set expectations for when I dye my own girl ( still waiting on some things to come in the mail for that. Post is crazy right now.) Tags to watch are #smartdollsale and #smartdollsales, and you can also put out a WTB (want to buy) and/or an ISO (in search of) post on instagram/facebook/doll dreaming and other places to see if anyone has one they'd like to offload. Enough people have been banned from Danny's store that no one will question why you don't just buy one directly. If you've never complained about him in public you should be okay. He does trawl the internet for people who say bad things about him to ban them from his store (which is incredibly pathetic,) but as long as you post anonymously or under a pseudonym unrelated to the email you order from, you should be good from what I know.

It's honestly a shame that shoe child (his father is Jimmy Choo, the famous shoemaker) lets his ego get in the way of the products he has for sale. He has no real input in the production of them because he's a hack, and the actual team behind him are good people making good things and worth supporting. The dolls are nice -- some are flat-faced as barn owls, but some others have actual cheekbones, and I personally appreciate the stand they come with that can hook into the port on their back, because it's very convenient if you don't have a bigger stand with you and want to take some photos. But unfortunately, it's just not enough for him to sell a successful product. He has to make it about him as a brand like the worst kind of youtuber. I feel bad for the dolls because they're nice products and the staff who aren't Danny are actually talented. As far as vinyl goes there aren't many other options for male dolls or darker/fantasy skintones, either -- Volks sun skin and CM bodies exist but are trapped in Doll Point because fuck anyone who isn't living in Japan, and since Obitsu discontinued their 1/3 range options have only gotten slimmer for male bodies of any kind. If Danny would just be a normal motherfucker and sell them directly instead of doing limited run unannounced lootboxes for only his biggest fans, he would literally print money. Instead, he's alienating everyone but his whales, and eventually they're going to bleed out.

The dolls would be nice on their own, but since Danny cannot stand to not shove his ego down everyone's throats, they're unfortunately overshadowed by this narcissistic manchild.

You know how some people on the internet can be. They latch onto a person, be it this bitch, a youtuber or a twitch streamer, or some other personality in a niche community, they project a parasocial relationship onto that person, and then they obsessively stan them until their current fixation either does something so terrible that it costs them social clout to continue defending them, or a newer, shinier interest comes along for them to fixate on. I think for them, if it wasn't Danny, it would be someone else. Some other hobby, some other personality, the same drama and unhealthy need to defend the shitty behavior of someone they've never met.

A lot of the people in the Smart Doll community don't really care about the dolls, from what I've seen. For them, it's a weird kind of "notice me senpai" with Danny. Most of the people I've seen who actually like the dolls are far more tolerable in comparison. Those people usually have dolls from multiple creators, while Danny stans tend to have only Smart Dolls. (Some eventually branch out with time, and they tend to mellow once they do thankfully.)

There's a thread on Danny on one of the doll forums where people air their grievances and discuss his most recent bullshit. Last I looked it was over 50 pages long and most of it wasn't even wanking, he just keeps doing baffling bullshit.
