Certainly, the way demographics are shifting (more and more elderly) isn't good.

Because the only choices are between the massive implosion of birthrates resulting in a population with too many elderly and not enough young people to sustain them, or having lots of young people who just go out and fight total wars with each other (which is what always happens with societies with lots of young people).
