Hello /jp/, here's a modified version of Witch Hunt's translation of Umineko. It's basically oba-san -> aunt and similar things through find/replace; see readme for details.

Some things to note:

Scene selection doesn't work, and the beginning of Ep1 up to when the boat arrives at the island has slightly bad formatting; if you just want to see what it's like I'd suggest another Episode. These issues are from character encoding, I think, maybe from when I extracted the script from nscript.dat (I knew nothing about onscripter when I did this).

Finally, save files made with this version don't work with the original and vice versa.

George-aniki becomes George.

I didn't take out every single honorifc for just that reason. Specifically, when people use "nee-san" by itself, I leave it alone, since English speakers don't go around talking to Sister and Brother. Here, I'll just copy the relevant part of the readme:

Things that are changed:
oba-san/oji-san -> Aunt/Uncle
George-aniki -> George
<name> nee-san -> <name>
<name>-san -> <name> (when I felt it was appropriate, such as with Genji)
-kun honorific completely gone
-chan honorific almost completely gone
Things not changed:
When "nee-san," "aniki" etc is used without a name I left it alone, mainly because it wasn't auto-replaceable (too much context needed) and "Brother" and "Sister" would sound awkward.
-sama left alone
Things like "Kanon-kuuuuuuuuuuun" are unchanged because I was too lazy to use something that accepts regular expressions.

Battler? What a silly name.

Let's make a patch and change it to Butler.

Those were irritating as hell. Ryukishi could have just as easily used third person omniscient throughout without all that confusing POV shift crap.

Instead of "uuuuuuuuuooooooooohhhh" he should say "iiiiiiiiiiiihhaaaaaaaaa"

>> No.3001557

I don't really mind the other honorifics, but I never really understood why they left "Oji-san/Oba-san" in.

I mean, I don't remember anyone ever using "Oba-chan" or anything, so I don't see how anything would have been lost if they had just translated it like "Aunt Eva" or whatever.

>> No.3001578

Why translate oba-san and leave the others? That just looks stupid.

And nothing is lost by leaving it as Ojiisan Obaasan, so who cares?

>> No.3001587

What? There would be no way to discern reality from fantasy then. The POV switches allow us to establish the whole unreliable narrative rule.

>> No.3001599

>>3001578
They don't leave the others, though. At least the terms for relatives. They translate Father, Mother, Grandfather, etc.

>>3001582
And absolutely nothing would be lost if they just didn't translate the game in the first place, but that wouldn't be much fun for us, would it?

>> No.3001600

>>3001557
Wait, you think Aunt Eva-san sounds better?

>> No.3001607

>>3001600
No, I think "Aunt Eva" sounds better. "Aunt" conveys respect, no need for the "san".

(Just like how nobody in the translation says "Mother-san".)

>> No.3001608

>>3001599
Except, if it was all in Japanese, you wouldn't be able to understand it. However, you do know what Obaasan and the like mean, just as you know what Aunt and Uncle mean.

But I know what Okaa-san means, too! Why did they remove it? How can I get the full Japanese experience of Umineko if Witch Hunt translates the word "Okaa-san"?!

Holy hell, using nsdec on Umineko's script is taking ages.

Also, why would save files be broken? You're only making cosmetic changes to the script.

I never got that impression about the POV shifts, but I guess that's possible. If they'd been used on a more regular basis I'd agree, but they seemed to be thrown in pretty sparsely and randomly.

>> No.3001640

>>3001620
What are you talking about? I'm saying I don't care whether Aunt is used, or Obaasan is used. Just as I wouldn't really care if they decided to use Okaasan instead of mother, because it means the same thing, and I understand that. I don't see why you care which they choose to use.

Yeah, but if you use the name without honorifics some times, then it becomes the 'no honorific' style of speech. Using honorifics only some of the time makes them completely useless.

I never said I was offended or anything. I just said I didn't understand why they used Oba/Oji-san (psst, it's not Obaa/Ojii) when they also used "Mother/Father". I thought that was odd. That's it.

>> No.3001655

>>3001642

Yeah, I'm serious. Having the narrative be in omniscient third person then getting thrown into Natsuhi or whoever narrating for a few screens then going back didn't do anything for the story anyway.

Probably because the two are different. Ojisan and Obasan can refer to older people in general, and I think people are more aware of the terms. Imagine if they decided to leave things like Oyakatasama untranslated.

OP here
1) no fucking kidding. From what I managed to understand about it, it's just xoring everything with a constant... that can't be right though; there would be no possible reason for it to take that long if that were true.

2) I have no idea how onscripter works, and it could very well be that it's just the same character encoding issues that's screwing everything else up. However, my guess is that the way they do the saves is by just recording the offset into the script file to start at, considering that "nassembly" would have been a much more fitting name.

But yeah, I still know next to nothing about the engine, so please correct any incorrect assumptions I made.

Okay, good.
Because I met up with my mother recently, and she asked me if I had read any books recently. (Awkward silence breaker)

I mentioned this, and she expressed interest. I don't mind showing her Umineko, but I kind of wanted to be sure any gratuitous references to Japanese culture and language were kept to a minimum.
