Satan was the accuser/tempter, but not against god, and could not go against his will.
In other scripts, he is an agent of god.
Lucifer is not even mentioned in the Bible.
It was the name given to the mentioned 'fallen angel', a being that rebelled against God in later years.

And 'Light Bringer'(lucifer's meaning) was the name given to a human.

Aka, you take a fallen angel, a human name and the evil that acts upon God's orders, lump them together, and that is the Modern Lucifer.

You will notice that with this format, ANY association of God with the notion of evil is disregarded and the shit and trials and plagues he gave non-evil people, temptations, accusation by his agents were carried by good old angels only.

The term existed BEFORE.
The associated a different term, a different purpose and a different being altogether and got a mess.
And this happened a few good hundred years after when the bible and most prominent writings we use were written.
Instead of holding it's proper meaning, they now use falsely a jumbled mess that came about later.

DAMN IT, 4CHAN

HAVEN'T YOU FUCKERS EVER READ PARADISE LOST? I like how everyone who was ever forced to go to Sunday school or grew up with Western pop culture thinks they are an expert at Judeo-Christian mythology as well.

>>In the Latin Vulgate, Jerome translated "הילל בן־שׁחר" (morning star, son of dawn) as "lucifer qui mane oriebaris" (morning star that used to rise early).[10] Already, as early as the Christian writers Tertullian and Origen,[8] the whole passage had come to be applied to Satan. Satan began to be referred to as "Lucifer" (Morning Star), and finally the word "Lucifer" was treated as a proper name. The use of the word "Lucifer" in the 1611 King James Version instead of a word such as "Daystar" ensured its continued popularity among English speakers.

Time to bust out with Gustav Davidson's A Dictionary of Angels.

#1 Lucifer - Pride

"Erroneously equated with the fallen angel Satan due to a misreading of Isaiah 14:12... it should be noted that authors of the books of the [canon] Old Testament knew nothing of fallen or evil angels, and do not mention them...

The name Lucifer was applied to Satan by St. Jerome and other church fathers. Milton in Paradise Lost applied the name to the demon of sinful pride.

[sic - In Hebrew,] Lucifer [was a connotation] for morning star.

#2 Avarice/Envy - Leviathan

The above book has lots of stuff about it being a primitive dragon, archaiac names for actual animals (Job 41:1, Psalm 74:14), a Hebrew name for Babylonian Tiamat.

Dante and unfortunately Thomas Aquinas were the ones to associate it with envy and eating shit up (wait gluttony?).

#3 Wrath/Anger - Satan

Hebrew meaning is adversary/enemy, which means contrary to what pop culture, Sunday school, and crazy Bible-thumpers might have taught you, "Satan" is more of a CONCEPT than an actual Biblical creature.

>>In Numbers... and other Old Testament books (Job, 1st Chronicles, Psalms, Zechariah) the term designates an office and the angel investing that office is not apostate or fallen. He becomes such starting in the early New Testament times...

Thomas Aquinas, St. Jerome, Milton's Paradise Lost, etc. all gave us the image of Satan as the irate leader of an angelic rebellion.

You know, I really don't think there's much more depth to the stakes' names than a reference and some characterization.

The possible exception being if the stakes used to kill someone has some significance. Like if Lucifer killing Eva would have some relevance. But that's mostly a metaphorical clue. I doubt the story behind the angels has much to do with anything.

#4 Sloth/Laziness - Belphegor

There seems to be a lot of confusion over whether Belphegor is associated with sloth or lust, the former being a newer development from Reformation-era writers and wannabe demonologists and the latter being the original religious association.

>>Belphegor or Baal-Peor ("lord of opening" or "lord Baal" of Mt. Phegor") -- a Moabite god of licentiousness who was once, according to cabalists, an angel of the order of principalities.

Rufinus and Jerome identify Belphegor with Priapus (see Numbers 25:1-3)... [and identified with a phallus].

#5 Greed - Mammon

>>(Aramaiac, "riches") -- in occult lore, a fallen angel now fuling in Hell as one of the arch-demons and prince of tempters

>>...avarice escalates to a state of infinite dissastisfction, and the sin's obsession with worldly goods promotes neglect of spiritual wealth.

I'm also posting this shit because I was interested in the deaths they caused. That, and for people who haven't played the VN to read the character write-ups.

#6 Gluttony - Beelzebub

>>(Belzebud, Belzaboul, Baalsebul, etc.) ...started out as a Canaanite deity whose name in Hebrew (Ba'al Zebûb) meant "Lord of the Flies" (ba'al being Hebrew for owner or lord and zebûb being a Hebrew collective noun for 'fly').

I'm not getting anything really concrete on the gluttony associations besides random demonologists and Thomas Aquinas.

#7 Lust - Asmodeos

>>The name is derived from ashma daeva (Asmoday, Chammaday). Asmodeus is a Persian rather than Jewish devil... in Solomonic legends, Asmodeus also goes by the name of Saturn.

The apocryphal Book of Tobit is where the associations of Asmodeus and lust come from as he falls in love with a mortal woman named Sarah. Sarah marries seven different men, all of whom are killed by Asmodeus before they can consummate their marriage.
