I'm not really sure which one is supposed to be the first one. タオルケットをもう一度3 was made first and they all seem to be completely independent stories though they all reuse the same characters.

The story and mood are very different and I didn't think it was anywhere as good as 2, it also had a problem with a lot of the boss battles ending up tedious as fucking hell. It was still decent though, also Concheru or whatever her name is supposed to be is a complete dyke.

The program itself isn't required in either case. You can play Yume Nikki if you've installed the RPG Maker 2003 runtime package (RTP), and likewise Yume 2kki with 2000's RTP.
However, I would recommend getting the program if only so you can take apart the game and see what you missed, what makes it tick, etc.

I'm probably as dumb as a brick, but I still believe the ending sequence was all a dream. That thing she used to jump off wasn't there at any point during the game, and there's no way it would appear out of nowhere! There's also nobody to accidentally leave that thing there!
Well... someone could have gone in her room while she was sleeping and left it there, but why would anyone do that?

I don't know if this is widely known; I heard about it on Uboachan.

Go to the snow world and find the bed. Equip the hat and scarf, turn into a snowman, then get in the bed. If it warps you, go down the stars, then left into the room with the fire. Stand close to the fire, and Madotsuki will slowly melt.

I finished タオルケットをもう一度1, it was alright but not that great, ending felt kind of anticlimactic, parts of the game felt like they just rehashed 3.

I can say now that 2 was by far the best of the three, in my opinion. The story was the most interesting, it had the most interesting options and features, it felt the most developed, it didn't need any grinding and the boss battles never felt like chipping away at a brick wall.
