/jp/, I have a problem:
I just made some onigiri, and it sucked pretty hard. I couldn't make the right shape, and getting the filling inside was difficult. The rice was too sticky here, not sticky enough there, and the result was a mess. What am I doing wrong, /jp/? Can somebody please help me?

Probably need to use Japanese rice. Also, wet your hands before you make the balls.

>> No.2837995

I wet my hands, and used Japanese rice vinegar; I even salted my hands as well. Still didn't work. I may be doing the shaping technique incorrectly. Any words of wisdom about the shaping technique?

just shape 'em like a ball. faster and easier. when you get the hang of it, go for the triangles. As for the rice sucking, that's your fault for not cooking it well enough.
cooking rice is a bitch, unless you have a rice cooker.

You don't want to use vinegar with onigiri; they're not a form of sushi after all.

Rinse and dry a 1L milk carton. Cut the top part off, then cut it along the seams so you can squeeze it into a triangle shape. Put a sheet of nori down in it, cover it with rice, the squeeze it into shape. Cut this into individual onigiri.

Japanese housewife anon, wishing you good luck.

Did you wash the rice enough before you cooked it? Most people don't wash rice very well.

>> No.2838124

Use the plastic wrap method.

Cut out a square of plastic wrap. Pat the rice down into a loose but flat pile on the center. Place filling in the center of the rice. Gather the corners of the plastic wrap, bring them together and then twist the plastic wrap so that the rice folds into itself (thus encasing the filling). Then shape the lump of rice into whatever shape you want. Untwist the plastic wrap and you now have your weaboo rice donut.
