I was always under the impression that witches in Gensokyo are just another word for girl magicians, but with a darker connotation. So they're all magicians of some sort, Marisa might be a self-proclaimed witch, and Patchy might be considered a witch to some just because her magic fits the role of stereotypical sorcery and magics.

I remember /tg/ had a discussion on exactly what kind of caster Marisa would work out being, I think the consensus was that she's a very charismatic wizard.

After all, Marisa actually researches and works to attain all her magic. She's not innately born with it so even though she may take short cuts now and again and supplement her abilities with items of power she ultimately practices, memorises and researches her spells.

Marisa is a witch in the sense of being good with potions made from local herbs/fungus though and being able to live off the land in isolation.

Long story short, Marisa is a the mundane character who secretly works at being the most flashy character in public.
