Someone can correct me on this but I used google translate to get the gist of this and I'm insanely amazed.

https://twitter.com/jyuri0606/status/1303895134669422593

So basically during the great east tsunami on Japan? A police cop was looking for a criminal during the tsunami happening? because the criminal stole a tsukhime disc and was asking in the neighborhood where is tsukihime? where is tsukihime? where is tsukihime? This elderly cop wanted to play it so much that his partner that was younger said, I will find that criminal!?

Jesus fuck this shit just adds another layer of how much tsukihime has effect on people and no doubt Japanese people. I mean I knew it inspired many Japanese creators and gauged a interest from visual novels in the 2000's but being alive and seeing this in 2020 is just bizarre. Then a year later type moon fest happens and they announced tsukihime remake. I think the most disappointed thing from them is not telling and updating the fans about tsukihime remake. I can't imagine you can at least do that!? How the fuck are these fans even alive? I would call them half alive or half dead?

After seeing that tweet, is just nothing but sheer appreciation of what TM once was.

>young cop says that he'll definitely find the culprit (but never does)
What a weird police officer. And I don't think Tsukihime is that exceptionally hard to find. Iirc anon from here managed to buy it somewhere, multiple times even.

I was just thinking, what would a pre-Angra Mainyu Holy Grail try and do to grant Kiritsugu Emiya's wish of a utopia? I just had the thought in my mind and trying to put together a somewhat plausible idea of how it would have worked.

If I had to guess, I would say that using its mana to summon heroic spirits or some kind of counter force like Alaya does, it would try and purge all "Evil" or very harmful human beings before they could cause destruction, a la Psycho-Pass or maybe like Madoka, or even Death Note.

It would be in line with Kiritsugu's methods of trying to get world peace, like Natalia said, the only way he can prevent something like Alimango from ever happening again is by killing all the people who are like Norikata Emiya.
Angry Manjew kind of deprives us of seeing a proper logical extreme to Kiritsugu's ideals by instead giving us an ultra logical extreme of "everybody dies lol", but I feel like a non-corrupt Holy Grail might actually grant a wish that while imperfect, does lead to a closer vision of Kiritsugu's "utopia".
The only question is how would the grail even achieve such a thing? It's capable of reaching The Root by just using an obscene amount of prana to I guess poke a hole in the world or some shit, but can it produce enough prana to somehow sustain a powerful enough counter balance against all potential major evils in the world? Would the Human Order just bitch slap the Holy Grail for trying to do such a thing?

Any thoughts on this?

The only way to eliminate conflict as a concept is to eliminate all forms of scarcity, so it would probably have to involve making literally all living things true magicians or merging the universe into a singular infinite entity. The alternative is probably like Requiem or some shit because that's more interesting.

Anyways, the entire scene where Kerry confronted the grail was written like dog shit with a fallacious, unnecessary thought experiment when simply burying Kerry in negative sentiment like what happened to Shirou and Saber would've been far more effective and highlights Butcher's inability to sympathize with humans. It also was originally supposed to blow up when Kirei touched it.

>Anyways, the entire scene where Kerry confronted the grail was written like dog shit with a fallacious, unnecessary thought experiment when simply burying Kerry in negative sentiment like what happened to Shirou and Saber would've been far more effective
Part of the point is that Angra Mainyu views Kiritsugu as being the one who understands what it means to "bear all the world's evils" though, which is why the grail essentially exemplifies favoritism and gives him the wish rather than Kirei. From the moment Kiritsugu says "If I am to carry all the evils of this world, then let it be so. If that will save the world, I will gladly accept it.” in volume 3 after killing Kayneth, the grail likely favors him.
He shows Kiritsugu this thought experiment because he believes it will indeed work in combination with taking Irisviel's form when presenting the wish to him, Manjew's issue was grossly misjudging Kiritsugu's character.

Also, I don't recall the curses doing shit to Shirou, so I don't see how that would have made a difference here.
The real correct thing would have been to tip the scale in Kirei's favor.

>It also was originally supposed to blow up when Kirei touched it.
Is that not what happened though? I always interpreted the ending of Fate/Zero as being Angra Mainyu reaching out to Kirei before his death, just like it reached out to Kiritsugu right before him and Kirei were about to kill each other.
Thus, what happens at the end is Kirei's unconscious wish, his desire being realized by the grail partially. That's even what Gilgamesh says at the end. This isn't the part of the ending that's incongruent with Fate/Stay Night.

Hate me if you want, but I'm one of those people who prefer Fate/Zero to Fate/Stay Night so I'd rather it exist than not, even if it doesn't always line up with the bits of details on the Fourth Grail War that we get in Stay Night, it makes for a better standalone story than if it tried too hard to kowtow to Stay Night's outline of the previous Grail War..

Kirei also bitterly says that the fire was caused due to cowardly master who constantly ran from battles (Kiritsugu) getting ahold of the grail. Also in Fate/Stay Night it's stated that Angra Mainyu's curses is what killed Kiritsugu. It wouldn't make sense for Kiritsugu to be killed by Kirei given Shirou witnesses Kiritsugu's death.

Fate/Zero did nothing different from what Fate/Stay Night shows in this instance, as Fate/Zero just goes with how he did in Fate/Stay Night, sitting with Shirou.

>How did Kirei kill Kiritsugu though?
Before Zero the assumption was that Kirei did exactly what he did to Shirou in the fate route: use the mud to put that curse onto him. He gradually got weaker over the years & died next to Shirou. Thus Kotomine killed him.
I’m arguing that Zero created an inconsistency by removing Kotomine from Kiritsugu’s death & making Angra Mainyu the killer.

Why would Kirei be able to do that at the time of Fate/Zero though? He was shot by Kiritsugu and killed, Angra Mainyu revived him -- that is also according to Fate/Stay Night.
Are we to then believe that Kirei was revived with no heart and then threw the grail mud at Kiritsugu afterwards when Fuyuki already burned or something?

That timeline makes no sense, Fate/Zero isn't the one that created an inconsistency here, if it depicted Kirei getting into a second fight with Kiritsugu and him throwing the mud and running away, there would be an even more nonsensical incongruence between Zero and Stay Night.
If we believe that translation is correct, then it's Stay Night which fucked up. Again, that's the wrong incongruence to lay at the feet of Zero.

I just can't imagine this. Kiritsugu sorting through the wreckage of the Fuyuki fire only to have Kirei flank him, throw mud, and then scamper away, it just looks so ridiculous and childish in my mind.
If Kirei threw mud at Kiritsugu, why would he stop there? Why wouldn't he just fight and kill Kerry there? Fate/Stay Night only mentions that they fought once, and that Kiritsugu had defeated Kirei, so it makes no sense that they would have a second encounter where Kirei gets to throw mud at Kiritsugu and then run for whatever reason.

It just doesn't make any sense. The only way I can make sense of this is if he's claiming that due to the grail mud falling due to it being HIS wish, he is the one who killed Kiritsugu.

>Kiritsugu sorting through the wreckage of the Fuyuki fire only to have Kirei flank him, throw mud, and then scamper away, it just looks so ridiculous and childish in my mind.
The way I’d write is that Kirei curses him & then leaves him for dead in the great fire, thinking the initial effects of the curse would leave him unable to escape. Meets up with Gilgamesh, sees that he’s incarnated into the world, & they both head back to the church. Kiritsugu finally pulls himself together, finds Shirou, & gets him to the hospital. Kirei was talking about himself in this context, which Shirou confirmed with him.

I'll break the Manjew scene down for you because you're actually retarded.
200 on one ship. 300 on the other.
First, it operates on the assumption that one person is capable of repairing a hull breach alone and is incapable of recruiting others to expedite the process or teach them while repairing it.
Second, it depends on Kiritsugu conveniently being on the ship with the lower number of people to justify killing them to help the others, said people collectively being selfish enough to prevent him from working on the more urgent ship first, and third, a ship that can carry 300 people but incapable of carrying 500. For reference, cruises can usually carry up to 3000 individuals plus luggage, to say nothing of cargo ships that carry far heavier things. Here's a simple equation to calculate a ship's capacity: Number of people = vessel length (ft.) x vessel width (ft.) ÷ 15. This would mean both ships have to conveniently be large luxury yachts that are already overcrowded for some reason. If this is not the case and the ship could carry at least 500 people without sinking, it relies on Kiritsugu refusing to try to persuade the smaller population through literally any non-violent means, which would probably be significantly faster than murdering 200 people singlehandedly.
Third, and the most damningly retarded element of this conflict, is the fact that the 300 crew would inexplicably move from a ship that is going to be repaired to one that is not despite the fact the ship that is intact was already proven to be capable of carrying them. There is no way to rationalize this absolutely ridiculous development. In addition, Kiritsugu, despite his protests and refusal due to not lining up with his morals, ultimately accepts Mainyu's logic from its perspective.
>b-b-but it was supposed to be stupid! muh characters!1!!
When two characters are in a philosophical debate with a clear winner and loser, it indicates the writer himself using the story as a mouthpiece for his worldview. It's necessary for the writer to have this thought process and put it to paper. If you want to argue that Urobuchi, who has a terrible habit of writing like this in complete sincerity and does so several times in FZ, held the readers with enough respect to expect them to understand how flawed this "ultra logical conclusion" is. Forgive me for finding that extremely unlikely when the rationalization for Mainyu providing this argument to begin with doesn't line up with the established functionality of the Holy Grail and is thus strictly used for thematic reasons, not to develop its superficial aspects.

>Shirou literally tanks the curses in Fate and Heaven's Feel
The fact you think that's the issue I was taking with what you typed is a pretty bad indicator of your reading comprehension.

>unless you're crying about me not recalling some obscure bad ending like a faggot
No, and there is no such thing as an obscure bad ending. All of them can easily be accessed by using the flowchart everyone has now or by simply following the hints contained in the Taiga Dojos and common sense, not to mention the in-game check-list. Each one is a completely plausible development of the story and is just as important as any other individual scene contained within it. I'd love to talk to you about the nuances of Urobuchi's writing style, his blind spots, and flaws, but you seem like you'd be incapable of rationally judging something on a technical level.

English is a very simple language compared to japanese, which makes translating something and trying to keep the entire meaning intact very difficult. Way more difficult if you were to say, translate german. They have 2 alphabets, english has 1. They have Kanji, english has no kanji. A Furigana-like system really doesn't truly exist in english. Furigana is essentially writing katakana/hiragana above kanji to help out readers for the more complex ones, but writers quickly discovered you can use it to give sentences double meanings instead, this is very commonly used by chuuni VN and LN writers. You can write shit like "His sword[lightning] pierced through my shield" to say his sword strike was as fast or powerful as lightning. But writing that way is not commonplace at all in western countries, so the translator will usually rework the sentence into something like "His sword pierced through my shield as if it was lightning" to make it work. But in some cases it is next to impossible to make the sentence work, often the furigana and base kanji will be complete opposites of each other to imply a mental conflict of the character for example. If the translator encounters a case where he feels he cannot make it work he simply chooses which one is the least serious loss and drops the other one entirely. A localizer might start writing complete fanfiction in an attempt to convey both at the same time. One Mahoyo translation project on fuwanovel felt furigana was important enough that the translator decided to convert the furigana system to english, and it does truly look strange. I can think of very few other examples, it is pretty much industry standard for everything to drop the system. Using Furigana, you can, in theory, write 2 entirely different sentences that are displayed at the same time and the translator will just want to shoot himself in the fucking head. One recent example I can think of is the FGO summer event where Mashu actually does this to convey to the reader that something very fucked up is going on. Even moving away from Furigana you have shit like 900000 different ways of spelling "I" that all reveal different personality traits to readers and several hundred hyper autistic speech ticks that really have no equal in english, like nojalolis, so translators will usually try to rewrite all the dialogue to be read in some random accent they feel fits and gets close enough or drop it entirely.

It's hard to explain. F/SN is well known as a chunnige (and so is type-moon stuff in general). I assume you have a general feel for what chuuni is (superpowers, tons of fights, secret organizations, etc.) What makes this different from English is that the underlying language/prose itself to changes from "normal" Japanese. The way Kotomine talks in this text is nothing like what a real person in Japanese would actually say (at least non-ironically anyway). It's chuuni as fuck, but that's okay because it's fucking cool. I mean look at this shit:

>外界との隔たりをもったものが、
That's just a really fancy way of saying "weird/different/outcast one". You could easily just rephrase this as something like:
>異端者が、

But that's not nearly as cool. You'll notice that the english translation just says "when you are different from others". That's not wrong, but it doesn't have nearly the same connotation that the Japanese line does. You could attempt to do some fancying rephrasing, but it'll probably just sound retarded instead of sounding cool because chuuni fundamentally doesn't exist in English.

>the translator will usually rework the sentence into something like "His sword pierced through my shield as if it was lightning" to make it work. But in some cases it is next to impossible to make the sentence work, often the furigana and base kanji will be complete opposites of each other to imply a mental conflict of the character for example. If the translator encounters a case where he feels he cannot make it work he simply chooses which one is the least serious loss and drops the other one entirely
tl;dr translators are hacks instead of just keeping the ruby text. It's not a difficult concept to understand.

I've never seen a James Bond movie (aside from one I barely remember so it might as well not count as seeing it), so I don't know if this is true or not. Regardless, it's not at all the same thing. Chuuni isn't just "an exaggeration". In this discussion, it's a genre/style of a fictional work that consists of many different elements (detailed fantastical settings, superpowers, philosophies, etc.)

>translation
When some character randomly shows up and starts using some fucking obscure word like 拙者 to refer to themselves, である's all over the place, and just talks like a fucking weirdo in a particular Japanese way, there's no way to really translate that in English. You have to compromise which loses the intent of the original.

Disregarding the other anon's oversimplification, it's not like the chuuni genre can't be comprehended in English. You're explaining it now, aren't you?

Furthermore, the issue you take with loss of meaning applies to literally everything in translation, even loanwords. The task is to find the closest possible analogue. I don't think pseudo-medieval Japanese and pseudo-medieval English are that detached from one another. The actual quality of the execution is another matter.

>Furthermore, the issue you take with loss of meaning applies to literally everything in translation, even loanwords.
I don't disagree. I would argue that chuuni stuff is higher on the level of difficulty than say, a standard mystery novel in Japanese. You could attempt to go the pseudo-medieval English route and that's probably about the closest you'll get, but essentially that would just be shoving in thou's and art's and so on. It's not like you could convey some of the stranger sentence structures.

I think you're overestimating the similarities between Middle English and Modern English as well as how many rules there are for how sentences have to be structured in English. I'm certainly not going to pretend to be a Middle English expert so you could very well be right there. The translatability of something isn't something I view as a binary operation, but more of a sliding scale. Some things are definitely a lot more difficult than others. Translating Nasu's stuff I would argue is pretty much "hard mode".

Because Nasu is a hack he choose to make Extella another alternate universe and a sequel to an extra timeline that is different from the game, he just posted a bunch of cliffnotes on his blog and there's like 3 throwaway sentences ingame. I wouldn't recommend Link simply because the entire story is like 5 hours of pure filler, Extella is trash too but at least it has text volume. I don't disagree that it's a spectrum, but the point is that's not a spectrum that can be quantified, and where it falls will vary too widely depending on who you're asking. I don't think being grammatically correct matters so long as the intent is properly conveyed and the text can be understood, after all native speakers will speak in broken English all the time conversationally. As such, the only chuunige that's ever really intimidated me is KKK. I'd also like to qualify that I consider the practice of translation as a whole to be unethical. Translators are essentially pawning off copies that to the consumer, even if this isn't intended, is viewed as an original. It's interesting seeing misinterpretations of things snowball when it gets carried over to an isolated culture like Chinese fart magic, but correcting those misunderstandings takes a really long time.

>At that point you've already lost and are compromising.
This is and always will be a dumb meme, just like spoilers. You "lost" the moment you decided to show someone something that was rewritten. Simply changing the phonology and prosody is disastrous. If you're going to acknowledge translation as a practice, the most effective possible method should always be used. Footnotes are common practice literally everywhere outside of pop culture translations because people generally understand that they don't harm the experience if you ignore them and give you a greater understanding if you acknowledge them. It's literally just the best way to avoid changing the text. Does it need to be done without excess so it doesn't bog down the text, both in length and quantity? Yes. Is it at its best when, in the case of translation, provides a literal translation in addition to a different one within the text that benefits the experience the best? Yes. Anything is better than replacing an element of the original in its entirety.

I know this sounds weird but it's not only limited to the way characters speak/the settings/etc. It seeps into the style of writing itself. It's hard to explain but chuunige writers all tend to write their prose in odd, strange ways (sometimes it could be considered exaggerated but it's not always that). One of the easier tells is that there's a tendency to use more obscure kanji (although I've seen this plenty outside of chuuni so this may just be a Japanese thing). It is, of course, a term invented on the internet so it's not like there's a strict criteria, but it's a useful term and encapsulates many things.

Pic related is an example from the first Demonbane game. If you've ever read/played it, this is just the beginning scene where Master Therion beats up on Al. However, the writing style here is very distinctively chuuni. All this text is just describing gunshots and using language like "刻まる" and "怪異は起きた" in this context is atypical.

>this shit is impossible to translate
Well I was originally just half shitposting so impossible isn't really accurate. I would consider it extremely difficult though.

I think we agree more than disagree although you probably take a few more extreme positions than myself in some areas. I wouldn't consider translation unethical. More along the lines of a necessary evil (which maybe is technically still unethical. I'll let philosophers figure that out).

>You "lost" the moment you decided to show someone something that was rewritten.
I agree. I'm not against footnotes by any means. It's just that footnotes are an admission that you can't translate that part perfectly and thus require supplemental material to convey the meaning. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's less than ideal. But you are correct in pointing out that the very act of translating itself is less than ideal.

Reading is translating. You are converting what is objective and external (the writer's display of symbols) into something subjective and internal (your own personal understanding of the meaning of those symbols). Especially if you are not Japanese the language will have a very different meaning for you, which will deviate from the writer's original subjective and internal meaning, since it is culturally embedded in a very different understanding of the world.

It happens all the time with Japanese companies, more specifically in video games, where for one reason or another, they abandon a certain style or type of product and go off in another direction. I guess it's just uncommon for a visual novel company to do this. You can still love something even though you know you'll never get something similar again from the people that were once there or the company in charge. Nihon Falcom did the same thing when they shifted from making PC game to PSP games as a move to survive as a company and they effectively ended up courting younger gamers and leaving their old fans in the dust as a result. You can see the drastic design philosophy change from their games in 2007-2008 and what they released in 2010-2011 after shifting.
In any case, it's somewhat special that there is this much nostalgia for the old Type-Moon but it shouldn't be surprising given how big the market is for retro items of all types and kinds. But there isn't really any way the current Type-Moon can capitalize on it. They may just wait until the 25th anniversary or something but I don't trust the current Type-Moon to not screw the remake up and I've made my peace with the way things are so it really doesn't matter to me if it eventually releases or not.

In the true ending Hakuno gets out by sakura power and probably start having sex the moment the credits start rolling, but because Nasu is Nasu and nothing can be simple anymore he apparently said that the mooncell will always create a copy of the protagonist no matter what happens so Extra will always happen no matter what and he will always get deleted. Or the last encore trashfire happens. So there might be hakuno on earth that impregnates sakura, but another Hakuno dies on the moon as he does so.

Having an interlude with them talking would be great in order to explore their relationship more. The lack of any battle music also hurts and the action scenes lack the edits that make FSN fights great. More music and voice acting would be great. Does anyone remember the first time Touko was mentioned to receive Grand rank when she's 20 years old? The closest thing i can think of was this part from KnK 6
>当時───二十代でマスタークラスにあがった私は、自分が最年少の魔術師だと疑わなかった。けど、実際は生誕から十五年でマスターになった子供がいてね。中東方面の学院にいたその子供と会う機会は一度もなかったが、その名前だけは全ての学院に知れ渡っていた。
but here it says Master-class rather than Grand rank. Now that i think about it, did KnK have any mention of the Grand/Brand/Pride/Fes/... ranking system?

>> No.27363093

Thanks anon. Then i guess the ranking system was (somewhat) first introduced/mentioned in Character Material, El Melon 2 part.
About Touko and her 20 years old Grand thing i will probably go look up CF to check that. Though if i remember correctly Iselma arc didn't mention it either. Guess everyone just assume Master = Grand (i think it's the same thing too, just that KnK was written much earlier and by that time Nasu didn't think about the ranking system yet) and say Touko achieved Grand status when she's 20.

>when simply burying Kerry in negative sentiment like what happened to Shirou and Saber would've been far more effective and highlights Butcher's inability to sympathize with humans
Again, in the novel this is what Angra Mainyu does.

>The five small fingers, once so graceful, grabbed Kiritsugu’s shoulder. From the five fingers biting into him flowed a black mud.
>“Curse you ... Emiya Kiritsugu ... to pain ... to regret until death ... I will never, forgive you ...!”
>“That is fine.” The hatred-stained mud circulated in his veins, flowing into his heart. It drenched the soul of the man who lost everything. Still, Kiritsugu’s fingers did not slacken.
