Referencing folklore about the Oni. Sometimes translators translate the name of the species to demons, but isn't that a bit of a generalization? What's the next closest equivalent of the Oni in western mythology/folklore, an Ogre? Explosive orgasm Suika very related.

Ogres, but with horns.

Japanese has like a dozen words that all mean "demon" or "monster," and no one can ever agree on how to translate them.

Because apparently some people think it's "weeaboo" to want to use Japanese words for Japanese things.

People like that are why "onigiri" becomes "donut."

They're names of creatures in a particular mythology--you're probably not going to get an accurate translation because other countries won't have that mythology and corresponding creature names in their language.

Kappa are more medically oriented than technologically. The western equilavent is various aquatic humanoids like the nix or kelpie, they also seem to be portrayed similarly (nix can be both beneficial or harmful depending on the story in question, kelpies drag humans to water and eat them in some variants and so do the kappa)

Oni are within the "large humanoid monster that eats people" category so yeah ogres are the closest equilavent.

However no mythological creature should be "translated" into another language, it should be readily obvious that it's utterly retarded.

Tell that to the ancient Greeks. I don't remember the word for it, but they had a habit of correlating foreign mythology with their own, and ultimately integrating it.

Oni don't conform entirely to western beasts, nor to western spirits. Although they are far removed from the western (read: christian) idea of demons.

Among other things, oni are carnivorous and actually enjoy the finer things in life while demons mainly eat souls or some inedible waste.
Food time.
