I for one enjoy the erotic-grotesque nature of FelisOvum's artwork, as you described. It is far more in-line with the nature of the Touhou universe than the much-loved frills and bows.

It also freaks out the casual weeaboos and secondary fans who cosplay as Touhou characters and do the Hare Hare Yukai dance at conventions, which is another plus.

Touhou is grim and dark because they live in an ancient world of filth and farming and being attacked by monsters with no modern ways. They have all the droughts and starvation and whatever else old time people had to deal with, and besides that humans can't even go outside their prison city.

Who knows what kind of strict government runs that town, not to mention they are all under the iron rule of Reimu who probably demands regular tribute in the form of "donations" lest she open the border and let in more tanks.

Also, the noble Youkai probably receive tribute in form of sacrificial humans. I have mentioned before that if a human had a grievance against another, he could bring Yukari a young, fresh bit of live meat, and after she'd supped on it she would consider the human's problem.
