This is a list of good games to begin your journey into playing VNs in Japanese. Inevitably, most of these games will be moege, charage, or nakige. There is little to be done about this, as chuuni, sci-fi, and fantasy-action VNs have linguistic barriers that will be too much for someone still struggling with reading conversational Japanese. In particular, the biggest barrier for someone who is used to dealing with Japanese that is 'spoken', rather than 'written' is the existence of literary Japanese. The turns of phrase, different wording, etc. that an inexperienced reader might run into can either be seen as a learning experience or as pure confusion, depending on your level and state of mind. Every person who mastered Japanese knows that the best way to learn Japanese is to learn it alone. Especially learning Kanji is only possible with an intimate session between you and Heisig's porn story.

Being a Japanese teacher is not really worth it anyway. There is now google translate and most Japanese things are translated anyway for gaijins. But if you are able to speak Japanese and have an actual degree in something useful (gender studies and other Western ideologies not included) then you can actually get the job because of your nippongo knowledge.

Its not that hard with shows. Anime or live action.
For the most part you understand 99% of whats going on via the visuals. You might lose a few details like the specifics in a back story, but usually just understanding like 10% of what they're saying is enough to puzzle it together with what's going on in the show.

One of the harder things I watch is vtubers streaming, because unless you're watching a gaming stream, you have basically no context to work with and their facial expressions are nothing.
And unlike a podcast or something, they're not really trying to be understandable.

As first time language learners we have this tendency to try to cram in thousands of foreign words into our heads through study and review. We slow down our reading and listening to a snail's pace so that we can make thousands of Anki cards (or Memrise courses or whichever review method you prefer) to "master" everything we encounter.

I followed a number of polyglots for years like Alexander Arguelles, Steve Kaufmann, and Luca Lampariello, but there was one thing they all said that I just couldn't accept. The secret to learning words and phrases is to forget them all together. "Bullshit!" I thought.

It took me years to swallow that pride. I learned the hard way that we only acquire new words and all their different connotations by encountering them over and over in new contexts. Every time we encounter a word we are learning in native material, we learn more and more about how to use that word, and it becomes just a little harder to forget the next time. A small part of me deep down can't even believe I'm saying this because I used to be very outspoken about Duolingo, Anki, Memrise, and flashcards.

I also used to break down Korean short stories from this site (http://storytelling.nlcy.go.kr/DmhMain/DmhMainKrList.do)) word by word and line by line, and I drove myself crazy with all the drills I used to make myself do. I would "practice" a story for a week or two by shadowing it over and over and writing out each line in notebook 3x. It was honestly like the Dark Ages....just much more boring and none of the murders.

Immersion becomes something natural when you let yourself just read and listen without trying to memorize everything new. Of course, you're constantly looking up words in the dictionary, but there's no need to review them at all. You naturally review them by doing more reading and listening, and you'll pick up thousands of new words in the process. You might even have more fun too :).

Hey all, for the new roadmap Matt recommends using english subs while you go through RTH and basic grammar/vocab. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this since for the longest time it has been recommended to just try to get rid of english subs as soon as possible. The general rule of Kanji names is that there is no rule. It can be pronounced as kun yomi, but it can also be pronounced as "go fuck yourself" yomi.

There is a reason why EVERY student in Japan is required to write their name not only in Kanji but also in Kana.

there are plenty of decks with the traditional radicals, and i think matt's rrtk deck comes with ~250 separate primitives (or at the very least i think they are tagged so you could filter for them).

Personally I'm working on a deck at the moment which includes all the primitives & kanji that are used in the entire jouyou kanji list. It's looking like it will be between 400-500 cards.
