My Ciconia theory: MIYAO is probably a character existing in the subconscious of Miyao, more specifically his Selcom. Initially, MIYAO was injected not directly in Miyao's Selcom, but in the "It's a Wrap Public Bath" room (evidence for this: MIYAO only appears in scenes in the bath initially). In the Public Bath he can only act when Keropoyo is in "afk mode", that's why when Yeladot Shavit or the LATO sisters log-in he stop showing himself, he's running from Keropoyo. However, when Miyao began accepting his existence this rule was broken.

Van Dyne's rules are shit compared to Knox's rules anyway. Knox rules are about setting a very basic groundwork that only restricts based on shit that SHOULD be restricted, like "no shit that can be abused for unsolvable cases or infinite solutions like trap doors or twins" or things like "you can't hide important shit from the reader without a reason" or "no evil stereotypes just for obvious bait characters (no chinamen)".

Van Dyne adds rules we don't need like "the butler can't do it", "no love allowed", "no accidents or suicides period", and other rules that not only cripple Umineko but also make the solution way too easy to figure out. Like, if Umineko followed Van Dyne, you'd have to rule out every single servant instantly, the mastermind could never kill themselves even with evidence left behind, really by following Van Dyne you limit so much that the story would need to be written to go fully around those rules, like no servants at all unless they're the MC, because otherwise you now have characters that are impossible to doubt, which is no fun.

Come up with original ideas, Umineko was not made by ripping off a better story, and no great stories are. Katawa Shoujo worked because it copied a CONCEPT but that concept was never used, there was no original work they copied, it was taking a great UNUSED idea that made KS great.

Very much the same, I would have enjoyed Umineko more if it was actually always mystery content and not allegorical fluff. I never liked anything with Ange, I never liked the lion plushie, I hated the love duel. Those things served a purpose within the plot on an allegorical level, but they doubled the length of a very long VN without actually contributing to the mystery.

I like to compare it to Ever17, which didn't have allegorical fluff but managed to have an even more impressive series of awesome twists with a massive reveal at the end, because it sprinkled clues throughout basically every SOL scene of the VN. A conversation about technology and cool robo-dog pets? Super relevant information. A character giving you their full name? Relevant to the mystery. Most impressive to me is the way that the final twist works so well by building off of most of the previous twists, specifically how all of the girls have some gimmick that means they wouldn't change over time, which directly leads into the massive twist that the VN plays with time in a way that a ton of evidence points to but most people brush off completely.

The rule in Van Dine's rules is not "you must have scattered clues for an unseen culprit over the first 60 hours of the story", it is that the culprit MUST be a character present and able to be suspected from the early parts of the story. Yasu does not count for this unless you count Shannon/Kanon, and if you do count them as "Yasu" then Van Dine's rule that the culprit can NOT be a servant kicks in, because Shannon and Kanon are both servants, and even if you want to get into a semantics argument that they technically only pretend to be servants (which isn't true, they DO follow the orders of the main family when given orders) you would still understand that the READER is told they are servants for the vast majority of the story, and the spirit of the rule is NOT "a butler can't be the culprit unless they reveal they secretly aren't a true butler", it's "the butler cannot be a culprit". The fact that the only aspects of Yasu we meet properly in the main story (Kanon and Shannon) are both servants fully invalidates them under Van Dine's rules.

Van Dine's rules are for writing a "fair" mystery, that's correct, with an additional clause that a bunch of the rules are centered around basically saying "mystery stories are not allowed to have subplots or be multiple genres at once". My issue is that Knox already made a better more concise list, and Van Dine simply added rules that are not needed on top of that. It's not even a good list from a list format, his rule 20 is literally "I just want to list a bunch of tropes I don't like but I want it to still be 20 rules so this one is a bonus round", which is stupid.

For example, and again this is one of the rules that is bullshit and doesn't work with Umineko: Rule 11 is that the culprit can't be someone easy to suspect, like a servant (his own example). Why the fuck does there need to be a rule that a servant can't be the culprit? All that does is mean that now there are characters immune to suspicion for an arbitrary reason. Why should Umineko have 6/18 of it's characters instantly immune to suspicion in order to be fair?

Rule 3 is that there can't be a love interest for the main character. Why does that need to be a rule? It's just basically saying mystery/romance books covering 2 genre aren't "real" mysteries, which is stupid.

Rule 7 is just "there has to be dead people, mystery novels that don't involve murder are a waste of time". That's silly, it is perfectly possible to make fantastic mystery plots based around a diamond theft, for example. The stakes don't "need" to be high, if an author is good they could probably have a mystery novel about a middle school kid investigating which other kid stole a teacher's answer sheet and make it a compelling read if they know how to write to make the story easy to get invested in.

Rule 16 is essentially "no fluff", saying that mystery stories are not allowed to spend any time on anything that is not a direct contribution to the mystery plot. This would invalidate half of Umineko instantly, which some people might like, but Umineko having fluff does not mean it does not have a mystery with a valid solution that a reader could fairly figure out without being told directly (of course this is easier if they know the rules of the game, specifically that Umineko DOES follow Knox's rules and fantasy is biased accounts of real events).

Rule 17 is that a professional criminal can't be the culprit, which is again silly. All this means is that if there IS a known criminal in the plot, now you can be sure they aren't the culprit. If a mystery doesn't want an obvious culprit/red herring, they should write around that (not adding a criminal AT ALL, for example).

Rule 18 is no accidents or suicides. This instantly invalidates the entire Umineko premise of "Yasu commits murder/suicide on the whole family", as that is suicide. Shannon (as an in-progress mystery example) breaks this in one of the best locked room solutions in Umineko, to say it's invalid because it involved the culprit killing themselves is silly.

And to be clear my point in bringing this up is that for some reason some people still like to say Van Dine's list is good. Knox made 10 good rules that defined how to make a fair mystery, Van Dine copied that and added his own opinions on what he likes in mysteries into the mix.

RGD and Ciconia have excellent pacing (I have no issues with the vent chat scenes), but I kinda miss his clumsy amateurish writing from Higurashi and Umineko. It made many scenes drag and go on forever, but that had its own sort of charm. It's still an improvement in general, though.

I think Higanbana did it best. The pacing was damn good but it also had some clumsy conversations that went in circles.

It wasn't just the Walls of Peace scenes that felt mind-numbing to read, it was the entire Phase--though those scenes were the absolute worst of it. But even outside of that, those scenes could turn out to be 100% filler or absolutely crucial, and I wouldn't care either way. With the scenes you mentioned in Ep2 of Umineko, they were at least comfy to read and involved characters that we had already gotten to know and care about in Ep1. This in turn enabled those scenes to build character. It was enjoyable to spend time with them even if those scenes turned out to be pointless. A testament to this is that the first 1/3rd of the phase was the most enjoyable to me. Scenes can be filled to the brim with foreshadowing, but in the end it doesn't matter for shit if it's not an enjoyable read.

Phase 1 is honestly the weakest writing of r07's that I've read. The characters are nothing more than their sprites and their quirks. Very few have a distinguishable voice; for most of the characters, when I read their lines, I didn't hear *them* talking, I heard r07. The world and story had a major disconnect from the characters and the reader alike. Things just happened and neither you nor the characters ever really felt the impact of it until the last 20 minutes when r07 realized he had to end the phase.

If you say that it's just the first Phase, that's a lousy excuse, because even Episode 1 of Umineko and Chapter 1 of Higurashi could very well work as standalone stories with their excellent writing. The characters and the world were distinguished and enjoyable from the very beginning. And I apologize if it sounds like I have a hate boner for Ciconia--I really don't. It's just that I see the potential, and worry for Phase 2. I'm worried that I'll feel like I'm forcing myself to read Phase 2 like I felt with the first one. I also don't want to feel like I wasted 40 fucking dollars for a measly 14 hours of shit.
