I prefer Nanoha, there is something pure about her but she remains different from the usual magic girl in her attitude.

Fate is unfortunately screwed over in StrikerS and even in A's her personality outside of the determined daughter trying to impress her mother is frankly rather flat. At least A's made her into a kind of honourable warrior when talking to Signum, but outside of that there wasn't much to her. Good character design though, god knows who's idea it was to fit a 9yr old girl in a form fitting black suit with thigh highs, a really dainty skirt that may as well be her belt (and IS her belt in sonic form) all topped off with a flowing cape. They say the barrier jackets are usually designed by the mage's imagination. Fate probably followed her mothers wishes.

It's a shame they didn't do a whole lot with her once she became a smoking hot adult, it's like her barrier jacket suddenly became modest ironically when Fate is old enough that you shouldn't feel as guilty looking at her ass. Easily the hottest character in StrikerS ruined by a even more dull motherly personality with little backbone (her adopted kids have to convince her to fight on) and covered her up most the time. When she finally gets back into Sonic form she gets terrible animation and a lacklustre fight.

Here's hoping the film doesn't fuck up the best elements of the first series.

This. Though Vivio takes time to get used to and isn't really up to Fate's standards. She starts out feeling like a bad gimmick designed to give Nanoha something to care about, but once she gets blasted the crap out of by her own adoptive mother you kind of dawww at her insistence on following Nanoha's example.

Be fair, StrikerS had it's moments and even though both Nanoha and Fate seemed to lose some of their charms through the time skip, they gained in other respects. Mostly by becoming HEALTHY women who for some inexplicable reason slept in the same bed, in their lingerie. StrikerS fell apart in trying too much though, Nanoha herself didn't do too bad and came out looking bad ass if not a bit too obsessed with work. Fate was fucked over, she got a hot body and to comfort Nanoha some, but mostly had what little of her character left ripped out to wedge in more motherly softness, complete with (adopted) children.

She wasn't that fleshed out in A's, but at least she had that whole respectful warrior thing going on with Signum. I miss that. Signum got to keep that, but in return had almost no screen time.

I can sort of see your point on StrikerS just going for it on the yuri subtext (you could still, barely argue they were just good friends, god knows enough Anons did at the time) but it doesn't seem like the series has ever really shied away from it.

I mean, back in the original series you had Nanoha describing how beautiful Fate's eyes were and how she really wanted to get to know her better. You had Fate calling out her name when told. They've always gone a step further then others for the whole 'good friends' thing, it's just part of the formula the studio goes with, along with string along both sides of the spectrum. They love to put in a little bit of Yuuno on the side to put the whole thing into question and I doubt you'll see any further resolution in the later manga series.

StrikerS is season 3, season 4 is said to be upcoming manga only at the moment and probably expanding on StrikerS. Upcoming film is the first season redone to new styles. Meant to have more action, hopefully won't be styled too heavily after StrikerS and they'll have learned their lessons, but I doubt it. Bardiche is no longer voiced by a male, no longer angular but more axe like. Lots of little changes.

Pretty much. Plus the core idea behind the Numbers was pretty cool and would have worked better if it didn't take over half the series to get to them. Elio and Caro need to stay the fuck away from future works and fall into the kind of cameo appearances Arf is limited to, hell, bring back Arf, she was one character we loved healthy.

Point is, StrikerS wasn't terrible, it was just disappointing. The first series messed about a bit, almost parodying the magic girl genre for the first set of episodes before settling into it's own thing with duelling gundam like loli battles, then A's stepped up the flavour with a 1-2 punch of plot/fight/plot/fight.

Basically, they got ambitious and overstepped the mark. Some nice ideas, poor execution.

It was kind of experimental when Nanoha and Fate had theirs fitted, but you've got to keep in mind the time skip was like 10 years, plus StrikerS still doesn't seem to have them wide spread, the manga shows how Tia and Subaru were both misfits due to their styles. Subaru and Elio are both modern velkan magic base, basically making them like modern day equivalents of the Wolkenritter's system and most compatible with the cartridge system. Tiana was just fucking odd that way and made her own device before she joined Riot 6 and they made her a custom device based on what she was previously using.

Eitherway, it was still meant to be rare.

Caro and Lucitia would have worked better if Seven Arcs could draw monsters... you would think they would learn to stick to humans after the failures of the first two series. I still can't get why Zafira had to remain in beast form all the time too. Do they hate muscle men that much?

I loved how they seemed to give them both actually English voice actors but still clearly wrote the dialogue in Engrish. Both Raising Heart and Bardiche have clear English voices but hilariously broken wording that kind of fits for a computer speaking language.

It's little details in Nanoha that made me love the series so. Like the different languages for different magic bases, and a seemingly mixed accent for the one device that is a bit of both. Subaru's device being Modern Velkan is English like the Midchildian devices everyone else has but heavily accented as though to give a nod to the fact all Ancient Velkan devices speak German. The different firearm mechanisms on each device with the cartridge system is a nice touch along with the explanations on how barrier jackets work and the like. I quite enjoy the magical technology setting they have set up.
