I am losing my will to do anki.
No longer feeling the rush.
Not good enough to read LN.
Cannot really get into VN.
my skill level is probably just over N5 (duh, keep watching animu)
I get lost in most animes, and doramas
Trying to do inmersion, changed PC, phone, tv, youtube, ads, all to japanese
i used Spend at least 2-3 hrs a day listening to japanese, (music, podcast, rip audio from movies/anime)

Work has increased quite a lot and no longer being able to dedicate as much time as before
Trying to perfect my N5 tests as close as posible, probably can recall 250 kanji and write 70%

Any tips ?

So I was doing my daily reps and I noticed there weren't new cards anymore. Thought it was a bug until I checked my statistics and realized I've seen everything from the Core 2k/6k deck. I've been reading Persona 5 The Royal in Japanese recently, and I can read a decent amount of it, though I still have to look up kanji I don't know quite a bit.

i was wondering (legitimately) if yall think the MIA/AJATT approach is a meme. i do and i wanted to say why

i think everyone, or almost everyone, who actually cares about learning languages agrees immersion is the way to learn a language

but a lot of what matt says just seems crazy to me. first, his appeal to success argument that seems to form the backbone of his argument as to why you should trust him. the fact that he himself was successful with ajatt does not mean that ajatt is a good method, it just means that it worked for him.

his proficiency at the language, which is undeniable, does not make him an authority in teaching the language or in speaking on language acquisition. it doesn't make him anything other than someone who got good at japanese. and, i think this is worth noting, MIA is not actually the system he used to learn anything.

my issue with the MIA philosophy is that i think it is extremely inefficient. bombarding yourself with 10 hours a day of incomprehensible japanese and thousands upon thousands of anki cards in order to learn it in two years (at least according to his claims on the website) seems ridiculous to me.

i also think that what seems to be the goal - sounding as much like a native as possible - is bizarre. why would you want to sound like a native? as in, what does it actually achieve for you as a person? some of the best communicators i know in english do not sound like a native, and they get by just fine. too thick an accent can be bad, of course. but a bit of one is just an inevitable part of learning languages as an adult, and i don't really see the reason to strive for it other than to get e-cred for your "gains" (by the way, i find this particular terminology really fucking annoying)

i think most of all though i disagree with this idea that its fine if the input is incomprehensible. i mean, to a degree, sure, some incomprehensibility is fine. it's expected even. but krashen - who has his own issues, but in general is much more qualified on the subject than matto is - very clearly states that incomprehensible input is not good. gibberish is not good. yet gibberish seems to be what matto encourages people to listen to.

he seems to think that the brain is a "pattern recognition machine" that will eventually magically pick up sounds and meanings all on its own. id really like to see his source for that that isn't "my own experience", which doesn't mean a god damn thing.

he is making a lot of money off of all of this and it makes me sad to think that his increasing prominence makes more comprehensible input approaches fall to the wayside, and yes, they do exist.

also personally he just comes across like a major asshole to me, it is probably his djt rubbing off on him.

didnt have to do that. at most you'd occasionally have to read a few passages from the book or some shit but that's about it. this is the standard class experience for the entire country basically and a high percentage of young people are conversational and a decent percentage are fluent.

I just realized this but, a lot of the times the meaning of the kanji is just the Kun pronunciation, is this right?

Like for example, instead of remembering 必 can mean "invariably, certain, inevitable", No it just mean "かならず"... so I'm learning the Japanese meaning of a kanji and a word at the same time, although it's only useful because I already heard かならず in anime a lot of times and I already know what it means.

More details [may include self-pity and mild whinging]: So I'm working in Tokyo, out of the house between 7am and 8:30pm, currently doing six days a week (only for the next few months). My Japanese is like 60% score on mock N4 tests so yes, I know some will think of me as a useless piece of extraneous foreigner crap. I hate on myself enough about this and want to improve. However, after my day I'm so drained from my job that I can't focus on more work.

I thought about getting some kind of online lessons to help guide me, as I figure the problem is self-discipline, but I either can't afford it, can't use a non-Japanese card [been trying for months to get one], or can't attend the cheaper classes in person due to my work hours. My commute one way is three trains at about 15 min. intervals, so I don't have a lot of time to read or anything while commuting either.

A common suggestion I hear a lot is just to get out and talk, but that's what I did all the time my first year here when I lived in a more rural place. There was no English, just Japanese and all my friends were Japanese. 11/2 years later and I can barely make sentences. How is that possible? I'm apparently decent at picking up social cues - plus rare mutual interests. If I had been getting some guided language lessons in addition to my conversations, it would have been great, but my own habits weren't effective enough for me to do it on my own. I've followed a lot of study guides for "studying smarter", but it's just not working out for me. I need help and damn, I really hate saying that.

Contrary to what I've heard, the Japanese friends/acquaintances I have here in Tokyo that do speak a bit of English think it's pretty bad that I don't have basic proficiency yet (in my second year here) and when I ask for help, they get frustrated and just use English again. I just want to learn from someone who won't feel like I'm burdening them - someone who's job or desire is to teach. At the same time, my work hours are pretty difficult to work with and it puts a lot of strain on the teacher to be available at such inconvenient hours. Not sure what to do.

The problem is the entire concept of doing so many vocabulary cards to begin with, doing some high quality sentence cards per day and keeping that count reasonable while also immersing for the majority of the time is the best way to go. The mia guys also have said they plan to actually use data to see which cards have the best performance they already did this for audio and text based card.
