Hey guys,

I'd like to ask those of you who have already passed N1 what you did afterwards.

I'd like to continue learning Japanese and get it to a level where I can translate at least from, if not into Japanese (I'm an English-Slovak translator and interpreter).

But N1 seems to be the end of Japanese learning materials. Is there anything past this level? I have the Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar, but I'd also like some exercises to go with it.

I'll be happy for all of your suggestions :)

my problem with krashen is that applied linguistics doesn’t seem like a very rigorous field in general. yeah sure he’s got a lot of papers but a lot of the data comes from weird surveys and elementary school classroom studies. doesn’t seem wise to read much more into it than “get a lot of exposure to native target language stuff” (the monitor stuff seems too far to me)

I’m 20 a sophomore in college and I’ve been self studying Japanese since about age 15. Since then I’ve technically finished the Japanese from Zero! 1 book and I’ve dabbled in the Genki books as well as numerous other free apps.

My problem is twofold. 1) I don’t retain any of the information I study but I finished the books 2) I don’t really feel like I can use native materials because I have less than zero idea of what’s going on (though I still do those things for fun)

These two things combined with the fact that there aren’t really Japanese classes around me or anybody who speaks Japanese often makes me think what’s the point - I’m not good at it and when I try to get better it doesn’t quite work.

This is all to say, what advice do you have to advance and retain a language when self studying with no real set pace or instruction from some who actually knows the language?

im a native spanish speaker, and i cant imagine why anybody would care for stuff from spanish-speaking countries other than trashy music and telenovelas or 16th century picaresque novels. japanese, in contrast, seems much more appealing because of moe stuff and robot cartoons.
