there are two language threads open, but both deal with reading/writing, so i have a question. what sources are good for actually learning the language? not kanji or kana, not SRS, but actually learning words, sentences, ect.

i've tried/have downloaded currently Genki, that 'Lets learn Japanese!' show, Pimsleur, something called 'subliminal japanese' and 'japanese for busy people'. Out of these and others, i wonder what is recommended and what is collectively known to be shit. Suggestions?

thanks.

1. Complete Heisig book 1
2. Complete guidetojapanese.org
3. Read manga/light novels, using a dictionary as needed. Add any interesting sentences to your SRS

Has the idea. Some people object to Heisig though, so that step is debatable.

How come everyone on /jp/ only bothers with reading and writing and not speaking?

Is 2 a legitimate suggestion? How in depth does the site go? I had always assumed it was shit.

It goes into enough depth that you can switch to learning directly from Japanese sources after you've completed it.

speaking is easier to figure out. find pen-pals, social sites. once you have the language down, you just need to find someone to speak to. actually learning is what needs more text help.

>>2418184
true. i've found heisig to be useful, though, so the suggestion doesn't bother me. thank you, though.

It's probably the best single grammar guide available. Basically covers all of the grammar necessary for 4級 and 3級 of the JLPT.

bumping. thank you for the suggestions so far.

why the fuck are you bumping the thread? The first poster gave you everything you need to know.

[Aside] To give this thread some meaning and to spare the hapless OP from Anon's wrath, I'll ask a question.

Has anyone tried/know where to download Kanji in Context? I've heard good reviews, but apparently it's only sold in Japan.

Well, most of us only speak to our mom on the phone once in a while, and just need Japanese to read manga/VNs.

Shit sux when you got an oral exam coming up and you realize you've never spoken a word out loud, though.

Genki is a damn fine textbook. You should get the workbook and answer guide too, though. It's definitely worth it to do the workbook work.
