There's one thing that's stumping me so far, aside from the scoring system. I'm absolutely retarded when it comes to declaring pon/chis. I know they lower the hand value, but the problem is I'm not sure what hand I should be going for if I declare them. Too often will I wind up having a complete hand, but it'll be worth nothing and all I can do is sit out the rest of the round feeling like a dickhead.

What was the furthest from tenpai hand you had when starting? I swear I've been getting shafted with hands being just 1-2 tiles away from calling a misdeal, or hands where I can be 2 or so tiles from tenpai at the start, then not getting a single damn tile the rest of the game.

I've been getting pretty mundane deals for the most part. I had the best in the second game, with two tiles from tenpai, but I ended up throwing out half of the sequences for a better hand anyway. The last one was just pure luck.

The first row is a restricted rule set in that you can not ron with an open hand of just simples (a hand that does not consist of 1's, 9's, winds or dragons)

Second row is the same as above, but the timer to deal /call tiles is shortened.

Third row and down you're allowed to ron on open simple hands, and there are also red 5's added in that give additional hans similar to the dora.

Fourth row is the third but shortened timer again

Fifth row is a 3-player variant that takes the rule set of the third but also includes the rule that the North wind can be set aside as a bonus han, acting like a dora.

Sixth row is the fifth but shortened timer again.

It's impossible to know with 100% certainty, but a simple look at your pond, calls and discards makes it a bit clearer. The fact that you discarded all of your Sou on draw, and that tiles were going into your hand and Pins were coming out should make it clear that you had a hand full of Man or Honors.

When he drew the Chun, he kept it. It was a live tile, and I support that choice. However, dealing the 2 Man after seeing you held onto the 7 Man until it had to be cut after a draw is a lapse of sanity or just silly. With that hand, he should've dealt the 2 Sou, since you discarded 1 Sou on the first turn after drawing it. Any non-7, 8, or 9 Man tile was risky.

This is all in hindsight though, and I know most people don't over-analyze each hand like this. I was just a little peeved that the game ended early, since I was enjoying it. Good game, regardless of the outcome.

It's not about analyzing or not analyzing, and it's not possible to over-analyze an interesting situation. However, a tip from me with regard to situations like that - if someone is in tenpai with an obviously huge hand, you have to gauge the skill level of the other players as well, no? A general rule is that at least one person has a reason to chase a riichi/tenpai. Even if you can avoid a dora 11 tenpai, you can't stop others from dealing in. If you are in tenpai you might want to consider risking dealing in yourself, because if someone gets a huge hand, with the general skill level of our lobby, you'll never ever be able to catch up.
