I practice vocab with anki for about 1-2hrs, then I spend an hour on grammar. After that I spend about half an hour reading. I then spend my remaining time practicing speaking. I also watch a show in Japanese to unwind afterwards, but I don't really consider that studying. Figured if I could learn the keigo forms of verbs while and drill them like I drill grammer it will make things easier in the long run.

ive been feeling a bit frustrated with my studying lately, but today i realized that even if i keep forgetting certain words that wont seem to stick, even if i seem to be forgetting grammar points or certain kanji, there are plenty of other vocabulary words, grammar points, and kanji that HAVE stuck! and i need to focus on the fact that i HAVE learned things.

i dont think this is true as a rule. shirokuma cafe is a good example because it's kind of high on the difficulty list but it heavily relies on sight gags and general visual comedy so it's incredibly comprehensible (almost every episode has at least one segment that is just a sequence of words with pictures of them, even). theres a huge variety in animation direction of showing vs telling, even within genres and demographics. think about how much of a given show in english you can misunderstand if you're just listening to it instead. obviously vocab is going to be a huge factor, i wouldn't say it's not one, but stack ranking anime difficulty solely by vocab gets you a lot of weird rankings that just don't make sense (though often shows with limited vocab also have visuals because they're aimed at a younger audience anyway, idk)

Yes. For one, I couldn't remember days of the week until I learned readings for the kanji. Around 3-4% of the words in my anki deck are marked as leeches. Likewise, some uninterestingly-looking kanji just won't stuck even after weeks of anki repetition.

thats actually what speed reading relies on, you recognize a word much faster than you read it
