I am the greenest of newfags when it comes to learning Japanese (like just got done remembering the kana green). Isn't kanji basically a hard requirement when it comes to reading anything? That meme makes little sense, I have seen many porn games that are chock full of kanji.

learning kanji separate from words they use is somewhat retarded, since many kanji dont really have a meaning on their own, and the "definition" or keyword assigned to them is usually that of the most common word that uses it.

This is false. All kanji have one or more meanings, and you can find them in any Japanese kanji dictionary. Kanji meanings are irrespective of the words they compose.

I was trying to autistically turansuraito Cowboy Bebop original jap, to try to recall my rusty basic Japanese. I'm stuck at two particular sentences:

It's saying something about an asteroid field, which is the object of the sentence, but I got no clue what that "organization" or "administration" means.
The final 'nandagana' I understand more or less, it's a masculine way of declaring a contradiction (like "though"), and 'ga-na' is a variation on 'kedo-ne', which is the "though" I'm talking about.
'nanda' I believe is a conjugation of 'noda', a way to declare the sentence as an explanation, but I got that from tae kim guide.
Anyone can shitpost a translation to that?
The second sentence I'm struggling with is

Am I alone in hating Tobira. I'm in the third chapter and I find the book awful for self learning, at least in comparison to Genki. This may be a little long and a bit jumbly, but I hope you can stick with me because I'm just feeling absolutely defeated over this.



Often the grammar explanations seem inconsistent with the examples or workbook:

Chapter 1 Grammar #14. ~だけ{でなく(て)/じゃなく(て)}, ~も

It appears も is a part of the grammar structure, however #6 in the grammar book section on this point doesn't have も used anywhere in it and so it seems to be not totally necessary. I often find myself using googling for better/clearer grammar explanations.



Little to no proper learning progression; simply read grammar point -> utilize grammar point. The layout isn't even easily break down-able into daily progression, (kanji and grammar workbooks included). Chapter 3 vocab is used in the chapter 3 grammar workbook. Chapter 3 grammar and vocab is used in the chapter 3 kanji workbook. There's no clear breakdown here. Am I expected to tackle it all at once and deal with not having learned some of the grammar/vocab yet? Should I stagger it so I'm learning chapter 4 vocab/grammar while doing chapter 3 in both workbooks? Who knows!

Why is the Japanese language so contaminated with gaijin words? It's a pain in the ass to learn the proper Japanese words, only to hear Japs randomly use deformed katakana versions of English words for common things like doors.

And what is it about the Japanese language that makes this stuff NOT come off as cringy and ridiculous? I can't imagine western cultures adopting random foreign words for common things like doors, toilets or cakes. Rather than cool and exotic, it would sound stupid.

Same with cutesy anime characters adding strange made up particles at the end of every sentence. I found WaniKani to be extremely helpful and wish I found it earlier in my Japanese studies. I’m on level 7 (it’s getting hard) but studied Japanese for 5 years.

As people stated it does have its drawbacks. Waking up to 50 reviews is anxiety inducing especially when it’s like this all day. There are certain words I’ll never forget (like 私) that I don’t need to practice but am forced to. I wish it was more customizable in that way.

That being said my kanji jumped up A LOT this past month and a half. I probably knew 100 kanji without knowing the on’yomi and kun’yomi readings. I never focused on kanji because my memory is trash.

And that’s why I think the repetition helps. Failing over and over and over again you will pick it up. Now I can say more with my expanding vocabulary, read more, and get my grammar from outside sources.

Because I knew I would have trouble recalling it from English I use KaniWani as well so I’m forced to know these words from Japanese to English and the reverse.
