In this page Miura says 「とらなくてよろしい」and by the context it seems like she would be telling Yotsuba that she shouldn't be catching something like frogs, but the only way I've ever seen てもいい used is for permission. The DoJG says that when this grammar is used with negative verbs it just means "it's okay if you don't do [verb]," which doesn't really make sense in this context.

Did Core2k/6k for one year, quit after the 2k portion. Then did a mining deck for another year. In total I "learned" 6000 words through anki, and 3000 kanji since I made a point to only add words with kanji I didn't recognize or couldn't read correctly.

I like Korone because she plays actually interesting games instead of the mainstream flavor of the months that most big ones play. Shizuka Rin's FF14 streams have been good background noise sometimes. I like Natori Sana's voice. 78 moco is the best boirotuber.

My average time per card when I did anki was 3 seconds. I feel like anime would bloat that to a number a lot higher than I would like to spend on Anki. That said I haven't used them and I barely know what they're like so sure. Whatever works for you is probably worthwhile to do.

Tobira no Densetsu. In terms of commercial games people would actually know, probably Final Fantasy Tactics. Very strong script and the ending is worth thinking about. The plot kind of goes off the rails but even still, it's so packed with 名言 and grace it's hard not to respect it as an accomplishment. Also, I recommend reading it in Japanese if you've only ever played the PS1 English version. They really botched the fuck out of it, tons of errors. "Blame yourself or god" and "animals have no god" are just about the only lines TL'd well.

It's kind of a psychological thing. Like, in terms of raw gains, you're right, in never makes sense to drop anki. If your priority is just pure progress I don't have any disagreement. But for most people, I think like, their happiness index and overall... I want to say consumption rate would benefit from dropping anki and not making these cards? Anki is kind of like a chain ball around your leg that weighs you down for however so long you use it, draining time and brain space.

I don't know you very well Quiz since I left back in the Jamal revolution of 2017-whenever the fuck it was but I do get the impression you're a pretty focused and dedicated worker. Russian genes or something? So I think it's very possible that making/reviewing anime cards isn't as big of a leech on your brain space / daily time as it would be for other people. For me though, dropping Anki was pretty life-changing in a good way. One less daily thing I had to keep up with. One less job to do. One less thing to constantly think about while consuming Japanese media. One less thing that made me feel like a "JP learner" instead of someone who knows Japanese. Etc. I'm inclined to believe this would hold true for the majority of normal people without dedicated Russian genes that allows them to create and review cards with extreme efficiency and little psychological impact. This is all pretty wishy-washy and anecdotal though.

Well, I actually think that social interaction is a lot more valuable than Anki. I think a lot of people consider discord "wasting time", but who would ever consider hanging out with friends IRL just hooting the shit to be "wasting time"? It's the same thing, just online. Friendship forged through discord/social media/whatever is in many ways more valuable than spending the afternoon watching a new anime. It has its place.

But like I said. You might be able to contain all this Anki autism into like incredibly efficient 30 minute blocks, but I think it would eat up a lot more time and attention for other people. Personally I only spent like 30 minutes in anki doing the actual reviews/new cards, but on a whole it was eating up a lot of brain space. Thinking about mining while reading, dragging out when I started my reviews, feeling my mood kinda plummet as I sat down to grind out my daily reviews, etc. Humans are fragile things and I think Anki is kind of a noticeable detriment to quality of life. Not to overstate it or anything but I think the sooner someone stops "studying" Japanese and is purely just interacting with it in the wild the sooner they can be a free bird flying through the sky and self-actualize into their best self.

Hi! I just started learning Japanese since 2 days. I'm done with all the Hiragana characters by now. I've got two Anki decks, one for Core2k, and another for Kanji Radicals. Along with that I'm doing the RTK. For grammar, I'll be proceeding forward with Tae Kim. Is there anything else I should keep in mind? Anything I could add to this? Or is this much okay for a two day beginner?

Also, is a PDF version for RTK okay, or should I get a hardcover once this quarantine ends?

One last question, how do I study again what I studied today in the Anki deck? I tried clicking on Custom Study, and then on Review Forgotten Cards, but it's not letting me start again. Any ideas on what I should do?

do rtk keyword to kanji. you can memorize the kana before, during, or after doesn't matter. when youre finished, do core2k and read/mine all of an introductory grammar resource, doesnt have to be tae kim. and after that you try to read native material and sentence mine that.

when i briefly tried anime cards i ran this on my png screencaps before adding them to my cards

worth learning the radicals just so you can meaningfully differentiate between similar looking words

e.g. 待つ vs 持つ
you can look at the one on the left and see that its kanji has the radical to do with going like in 行（く）
and the one on the right has the 手 variant (扌) radical in it

if you don't know radicals all you can really do is go "well the left one has this kind of squiggle whereas the right one has this kind of squiggle"

i mean there's only like 200 of them so you can easily just bang through that kangxi deck in a few days just to kind of get them into your head then drop it and move on when you've got the gist of it. don't worry about memorizing the english names for them or anything.

dude you haven't even seen the arcs past yorknew how the fuck can you judge it. there is nothing as epic as meruem vs komugi or netero vs meruem or gon vs pitou in the rest of hxh. the only caveat is that the CA arc is heavy on themes and parallels and realistic character decisions and there are very slow parts where the narrator takes over the show because togashi wants you to get into the characters' heads as things spiral out of their control. also he throws a lot of characters into the mix and some of their story lines are kind of boring while others are great. if you go in wanting fights or epic lines every other episode you'll be disappointed. it is very different from yorknew and it's why a lot of people prefer yorknew but imo CA is much better. everything else you said is true enough, those series all got worse as they progressed. our only disagreement is that i think they were always pretty gay. YYH is probably the only straightforward battle shounen i can stand nowadays. the last arc is a bit rushed and disappointing but it's not straight up bad.

if you ever watch hxh again, watch 1999 and then switch to 2011. you can skip greed island because it might bore you. it introduces a lot of game mechanics which are never referenced again outside of that arc and outside of that it's just a training arc. just read a summary or short summaries of each episode. after the yorknew OVA, switch to 2011. you can watch episode 73 and 74 if you're interested in the finale fight of greed island. then skip to episode 76 and finish the series from there.

used to lurk here when it was still on /a/, i've finally made it and come back to give a few words of wisdom for any of the new learners still coming here:

i almost gave up on learning japanese, so many times. and i also did indeed give up many times. i had no more motivation, no joy, wondering why i wasted so much time learning garbage while still barely could understanding anything at all.

even when i got better, it was still not good enough.

i picked up on japanese last year again and somehow i just noticed that i don't feel this way anymore. in fact, i like to look at crazy grammar in my free time when i'm bored. i like it again to randomly browse through japanese twitter pages. unknown words make me excited instead of frustrated.

i also stopped visiting /djt/.

this thread is really nice when you start learning japanese. get nice textbook recommendations, tips how to study kanji, optimal output with minimal effort kind of posts. but this is also were the trouble starts. genki vs minna no nihongo. rtk vs kodansha. you see a post about how wanikani is the holy grail of japanese kanji studying, the next day somebody writes how much better and faster anki is.

faster. slower. more. less. these words pop up so often, so contradictingly. japanese takes a long time to learn, so don't expect to be getting better fast. you need to study more than 1 kanji a day, else it will take x years for you to finish. don't study too many kanji a day, else you get burnout. you need xxxx h of mastering japanese but actually you will never master it. so study, study, study, study. to be fast. but don't expect to be fast. oh, you learnt 100 kanji in a week? expect to forget them soon again. you worked through genki i in 6 months? oh, it took me only 2 weeks, you're not serious about studying. follow my plan, the best plan ever made, and become fluent in a year.

it really is discouraging sometimes. i know that most people mean well when they post recommendations and new learning strategies or tell simple truth but for me it really became too much. it was very discouraging reading how fast others are, how efficient they are, how many hours other people studied per day, how difficult japanese is and how long it takes to just read harry potter or manga. and this every day.

Hello :) I am a self-taught learner for 6 or 7 years now, I am currently studying for the N3 exam in December. I like to rely on textbooks where possible, as that just suits my personal learning style.

An issue that has plagued pretty well my entire learning journey is written/oral English loanwords. I am a native English speaker, so you would think I would have an advantage in identifying English words — the truth is, I struggle HARD trying to decipher which English word they’re referring to when its a loan-word, even easy ones like ‘shirt’ or ‘design’.

I’m not sure why these words aren’t “clicking” for me? The pronounciation is often so quick and jarring that I have no idea what they’re referring to, and then I feel shame that it was an English word I couldn’t catch. I don’t seem to be acclimitizing to it, it’s continuously my Achilles heel in this language. Does anyone else suffer from this? Do you have any tips for me for how to better acclimate to loanwords? Am I hopeless?

ctrl+f for this line:
