In the second unsuccessful Mongol invasion of Japan in 1281 CE, 20-30,000 prisoners were taken but only 10,000 Southern Song Chinese were spared. The Japanese separated the Song troops who had recently surrendered to the Mongols from the other prisoners, called them "Men of Tang", and treated them well. On the other hand the Northern Chinese, Khitan, Jur'chens, Koreans and Mongols who had been living in the Mongol Empire for a century, were called "barbarians" and executed.
