There are two myths at play here. One is the notion that white men are treated as gods in Japan. Many Japanese women are curious of foreigners, but this can be said of any country. The "gods" part is a little over ambitious, although if you are white and decent looking you have a better chance of attracting attention in Japan, especially from women.

The other myth is that Japanese women are extremely closed-minded, strictly traditional, and would never date out of their race. You will see the term xenophobia quite a bit on this board. This is just not true at all. Japanese women have no problem with dating westerners, as long as the language barrier is not too extreme.
The only reason I can think of for this myth is maybe sour grapes on the part of /jp/. Either because they have no hope of ever seeing Japan in person, or they have already been and were not treated special as they envisioned. Most likely due to either being just average and forgettable in appearance, or because they were too high on themselves, believing themselves to be attractive when in fact they were quite ugly. to be honest, i've been to japan and i know what you're all thinking.

some ugly, lazy, nerdy guys back in highschool get really cute / sometimes hot girlfriends. most likely because they are foreign.

so to answer your question, i wouldnt move to japan just to make myself cool. that doesnt matter to me. but i would move there for a while just for change of atmosphere.
