I've got HH data and the launcher launches fine. I can reach the main title screen and it says it's not connected to a network and so I can't play which I expected.

Both have 50g which I see being recommended over lighter options. However, I'm more worried about the knobs.

This guy says that yuan's custom knobs make squeaky noises and dao's copal knobs will get shaky over time. He also shows that his SVRE knobs have acceleration so slow turning barely registers. Do arcade knobs behave that way?

Most people won't notice the acceleration difference in gameplay, and the squeaking isn't that common an issue and is remedied with some silicon grease. You'll end up paying slightly more for a svse5 than a yuancon after shipping and upgrades. Copals though are shit and prone to breaking because of how tiny the encoder is for a task that requires constant push/pull and bumping of knobs.

Multiple things:
- SDVX timing window is easier
- No keysounding means no feedback loop where you hit one thing off sync and the off sync keysounds trip you up even more
- Controller is more intuitive, it's instinctively obvious where you place your hands and fingers whereas for IIDX there are multiple playstyles that kind of depend on your hand size
- Pretty much all the difficulties up to 13 are really easy so you progress quickly and linearly whereas in IIDX pretty much every difficulty starting at 9 is its own wall

Also IIDX is just a harder game.

That's because you can't. IIDX just makes it more obvious because of the tight judgement windows.
Progress in SDVX comes easy, but it won't teach you the fundamentals of timing because you don't really need to think about much to do well. Just bump the hi-speed and you're (seemingly) good.
With IIDX, you need to actually take BPMs into account and change the way you hit the keys, as well as learn the more subtle rhythms and pauses between notes to get any decent scores.
It's all applicable and relevant to SDVX as well, but most SDVX charts won't actually teach it to you.

I play stepmania with a (soft) dance pad, which I assume is similar. I just lurk here since most people seem to play other games.
I've been considering trying to organize an event where /jp/ makes simfiles, but I'm worried I'd just get files meant to be played on keyboard, and I'd have no idea how to gauge the quality of such files since I assume "anything goes" when you don't actually have to move your body to dance; seems like the majority here are playing keyboard/controller based games.

The way I imagine the event, files of any difficulty would be welcome, so that new players could contribute with files on their level. In that sense, difficulty needn't be a barrier for people to play the charts effectively. The biggest barrier would probably that not many people have a pad. Thus, the turnout would probably be greater if people could contribute with files for keyboard. The problem with this is both that I'm not terribly interested in playing such files, and that I wouldn't know how to give feedback or do quality control on those contributions.

dunno if bait but i believe it is completely possible to play nonran well into the 12s but there's a point where nonran charts are literally made with random in mind. they are just unplayable clusterdumps. random makes them a lot more tolerable and fun. random early on is for scrublords who cannot learn cluster chords when they come up in the 10+s. it doesnt really become necessary until super dense shit or if you're getting AAAs consistently.

imo nonran charting is fun when its good but a lot of the time its bad, especially in the 12s, sometimes deliberately.

You can bind everything on the numpad except enter, since Enter (like Pg Up/Down and others) have system binds that for some reason can't be reassigned. Also, what do you want those for anyways? There's no good reason to use pinkies for anything.
