It's actually closer to machinima rather than proper animation. Finding or creating assets for setting up a scene in mmd could be insanely tedious at that time. Harumao's work is probably one of the 1% touhou mmd stuff that i could appreciate.
If you want cool graphic mmd drama stuff you can try hidden bioshpere, though it is not translated, arguablely more edgy than KKHTA, and that shitty shader plus filter over everything.

thanks for the rec. the first half was a bit of a slog, but when the characters finally got to show what they're made of, it was a powerful experience. well worth it if you're a sucker for character dramas that show the goodness and sacrifice that people can be capable of.

sorry i don't have more to add to the thread. m1 gran prix hasn't been mentioned, and some skits are quite good, but it started in 2007 so i don't know if it counts.
