By the way today I gained a lot of proficiency in handling classes (including inheritance, nesting, import from my own modules), learned some things about a couple other modules like random and json, how to read and write files, do error handling using try and except and do shit like store user data. I didn't get that much done today but I'm definitely progressing.

Hey guys, I’m going to Japan in 5 months and I would like to practice my Japanese language skills on my trip. I’ve been learning Japanese on and off for about a year now, with guides, activity books, apps, flash cards and podcasts – so it’s kind of a mix of everything. So far I know hiragana+katakana and only a few kanji, I understand the basics of the sentence structure. I know quite a few words and expressions. If I focus I can understand some of the basic conversation (if I know the words, obviously) and if I had to talk in Japanese to someone very patient, -I think- I would be able to squeeze out some humble touristy phrases. So, I had a thought... if at this moment my goal is to be able to practice simple Japanese with the locals - would it make sense to just buy a traveller's dictionary and learn phrases from there? Or should I just stick to my way of learning? Not going to lie, I think my way of studying lacks structure as I take notes but they're all from many different sources - it's giving me a headache sometimes. I would really appreciate some advice and guidance. And another question - is there a decent well-structured online course for learning Japanese? There are so many but there is no way of knowing if they are actually good and the reviews are real. I would like to hear your recommendations and experience with those!

Last winter I downloaded two RTK order kanji anki decks and started writing down every kanji I reviewed. Some stats:

Each page has about 400 kanji. The picture therefore has about 800 kanji.

Each color represents a different day I reviewed.

I have reviewed a total of 56000 kanji so far according to anki.

The longest I've reviewed was about 2.5 hours a day for 400 flashcards when I was still getting new ones. Now it's down to about 15 minutes for 40 flashcards.

I did 20 new cards a day so I can finish all the joyo kanji in about 100 days.

I didn't memorize pronunciations because that will just come with time when I encounter the vocab. I just memorize the general meaning.

Am I fluent? No. But damn it has made it much easier to learn the language now that I know how to read.

I normally don't remember the different conjugations of kanji when reading, for instance I don't really know what tense a verb is in based on the conjugation alone. I just do the memory game on the OP site again and again, I learnt the hiragana over around a week just going one column at a time then combining all the previous columns I've studied for general review each day. I did about 400 hiragana repetitions each column before continuing.
Only starting katakana now after some anki and my brain has got used to learning moon runes, only need about 100-200 katakana revisions to near perfectly memorise them.
Should probably take 10 days max to learn it all unless you're really retarded

it's just easier to add additional information onto something you already know. if you can look at the character 水 and recognise it and have an idea of what it might mean it's pretty easy to update your mental database table with pronunciation information too when you actually learn the word itself. it just lowers the mental load when learning vocab (although as i said i did rtk so im only speculating as to whether or not learning vocab without it is more difficult but logically speaking i imagine it is since it's more information)

Like I've said multiple times, personal preference. I can't read Japanese so I need to translate it. However, I like keeping things like honorifics because those don't really have a proper translation. For example, I would translate 禰豆子 into "Nezuko" not "bean child". The same concept applies to "お館様". I know him as "お館様", not "owner of this house".

i've been to england, france, germany, italy, china, japan, canada, mexico, 30 states in america, and a bunch of other places, going all the way from large cities to small towns, from shopping malls to archaelogical sites, and all sorts of different stuff like that, but i've never really felt that just by setting my foot on these places and having commercial interactions with local salemen and tour guides that i was actually getting a feel for what people in those places where like, or that i was ever getting anything but a highly manicured experience.

It's free (paid by my company) and it's good conversational practice. We do some very light grammar and just answers to questions I have, but really all that matters to me is to make it easier to produce output (mostly spoken) as I have no issues with consuming media and reading in general. Don't diss the usefulness of having an actual teacher follow you in your learning process, it's extremely useful. I see a lot of internet loners trying to learn Japanese and getting quite proficient at it as far as reading/consuming, but end up neglecting actual production because they have nobody to talk the language with. It feels very demeaning when you can understand everything everyone around you says but you have a very hard time responding to them because you're not used to speaking at all in the first place, and I need this shit since I literally live here. If you just want to watch anime and jerk off to doujins, however, you can skip that I guess.

i'm german, and the german dub for dragon ball had the original soundtrack. Recently, while watching a trailer for the Kakarot game, i learned that apparently the american dub of the show had a completely different soundtrack.
Many amerilards seem to be upset about the original soundtrack being in the game instead of the toonami one or whatever it was. I've listened to some of the american soundtrack and it didn't fit dragon ball at all.
