interesting still I don't think saying I write german-y Japanese makes sense
I may not write very good Japanese but that's just due to lack of practice and lack of communication with Japanese people
Matt at least seems to be enthusiastic about communicating with Japanese people and talks about Japanese friends so you'd expect him to know his shit

By the way today I gained a lot of proficiency in handling classes (including inheritance, nesting, import from my own modules), learned some things about a couple other modules like random and json, how to read and write files, do error handling using try and except and do shit like store user data. I didn't get that much done today but I'm definitely progressing.

Hey guys, I’m going to Japan in 5 months and I would like to practice my Japanese language skills on my trip. I’ve been learning Japanese on and off for about a year now, with guides, activity books, apps, flash cards and podcasts – so it’s kind of a mix of everything. So far I know hiragana+katakana and only a few kanji, I understand the basics of the sentence structure. I know quite a few words and expressions. If I focus I can understand some of the basic conversation (if I know the words, obviously) and if I had to talk in Japanese to someone very patient, -I think- I would be able to squeeze out some humble touristy phrases. So, I had a thought... if at this moment my goal is to be able to practice simple Japanese with the locals - would it make sense to just buy a traveller's dictionary and learn phrases from there? Or should I just stick to my way of learning? Not going to lie, I think my way of studying lacks structure as I take notes but they're all from many different sources - it's giving me a headache sometimes. I would really appreciate some advice and guidance. And another question - is there a decent well-structured online course for learning Japanese? There are so many but there is no way of knowing if they are actually good and the reviews are real. I would like to hear your recommendations and experience with those!

Thank you so much for reading.

Last winter I downloaded two RTK order kanji anki decks and started writing down every kanji I reviewed. Some stats:

Each page has about 400 kanji. The picture therefore has about 800 kanji.

Each color represents a different day I reviewed.

I have reviewed a total of 56000 kanji so far according to anki.

The longest I've reviewed was about 2.5 hours a day for 400 flashcards when I was still getting new ones. Now it's down to about 15 minutes for 40 flashcards.

I did 20 new cards a day so I can finish all the joyo kanji in about 100 days.

I didn't memorize pronunciations because that will just come with time when I encounter the vocab. I just memorize the general meaning.

Am I fluent? No. But damn it has made it much easier to learn the language now that I know how to read.

i think there's some value in doing a bit of rtk at the start in order to get a feel for how kanji are made up and how similar looking ones can differ in components
also basic stroke order principles so you can look up stuff more easily
i wouldn't do more than a 100 or 200 though, just learn some vocab and then read and watch anime while mining on the side

>> No.22679834

the vn one just has some very bizarre rankings ie words that are obviously common but for are listed as uncommon. innocent corpus also has this issue with words like 欠かす which apparently appears 1 time in the 5000 novels the frequency list draws from somehow. i find the vn one to be way worse in this regard though. it's fine for a ballpark estimation i guess.

>> No.22679845

you can recognise them and have a vague understanding of what they mean which can range from fairly accurate (水 as a keyword meaning water) to not particularly. there's ultimately no such thing as "knowing kanji" anyway so it's a pointless thing to argue about

>> No.22679853

>>22679834
but when you're doing rtk you're learning a keyword, story, and how to write it

it might be more info but the mental strain is less because they're all related to 1 single piece of info (the story itself contains radicals that tell you how to write the kanji and it's keyword). when you've never seen many kanji before they all just look like random squiggles (probably i don't remember lol) so trying to associate some nebulous shape with pronunciation info (which your brain may not be equipped to remember easily depending on how much anime you've watched) on top of the meaning is more difficult

あの大人しそうなお嬢さんがねえ...
あの - that
大人し - adult
お嬢さん - Ojou-san (young lady)
ねえ is for emphasizing
She looks like an Ojou-san...

見かけによりませんねえ
ません is negative
ねえ is for emphasizing

I have a plan to fix myself up. It is very simple. I will simply turn my internet off. Now I have done this plenty of times before and it doesn't help for a very simple reason. It's because often I need the internet and just end up wasting time after doing what I had to do. So what I will do now is I will have a notebook next to me. And before I go on to turn on the internet I will write down the reason for going on the internet and I will do NOTHING but what I wrote down and after having done that I will turn it off again.

People talking to President Trump in person in the white house: Mr. President
Trump's family talking to him: Donald, Mr. Trump, dad, uncle Trump
It all depends on context. In the context of this doujin, all the characters call the dude Oyakata-sama so I left it as is.

Passively learning via everyday life, playing games, reading books, watching anime, just talking to strangers, etc I do not really measure. It just comes from living in Japan and it's pretty natural.

Yeah, I agree, which is why the comma feels weird in the first place. If it's a simple て sentence with no cause/consequence relationship then it's all good, but with the comma in there it does seem like it's splitting the two parts in a before/after cause/consequence relationship that isn't really there (in that grammatical structure). But still, not technically incorrect in my opinion, just weird.

It's free (paid by my company) and it's good conversational practice. We do some very light grammar and just answers to questions I have, but really all that matters to me is to make it easier to produce output (mostly spoken) as I have no issues with consuming media and reading in general. Don't diss the usefulness of having an actual teacher follow you in your learning process, it's extremely useful. I see a lot of internet loners trying to learn Japanese and getting quite proficient at it as far as reading/consuming, but end up neglecting actual production because they have nobody to talk the language with. It feels very demeaning when you can understand everything everyone around you says but you have a very hard time responding to them because you're not used to speaking at all in the first place, and I need this shit since I literally live here. If you just want to watch anime and jerk off to doujins, however, you can skip that I guess.

Think I'm just going to take it easy for the new year with the coding.
Probably consume some Japanese again, just some lightweight anime and do coding in between.
I should definitely start to make a consistent amount of Japanese anime cards as well. I feel like I will have more success if I manage to invest a little effort into all my endeavours, as in some Japanese, some coding, some university work. Otherwise I burn out.

Essentially it lets you add placeholder entries to your Anki cards (as in it remember the field and the position corresponding to other audio files in the same field on the card) and corresponds them to Forvo entries. You can scan whether or not any of the placeholder items have been filled on Forvo and if they did automatically grab audio. Oh of course it should be able to let you grab audio as well but I think that's more trivial and already realized by other plugins. Also, this is a bit more advanced but ideally I'd want there to be a cropping mechanism built in that trims the silence away from the audio letting automatic cropping being handled by some sort of algorithm that scans the audio and lets the result be previewed to the user and if it's sub-optimal manually adjusted.

Matt says that even if you don't understand anything, listening to your target language will give your brain the ability to gradually parse more and more sounds and pick out words and start understanding things.
Stephen Krashen on the other hand said that input is only useful if it's comprehensible and that listening to your target language without any clue as to what you're listening to is pointless. He said that when he responded to a Yoga tweet.

Why has Matt never addressed this? It's a pretty big elephant in the room.
Additionally, where did Matt get the scientific evidence that just listening to a target language as an adult, language bound listener (that's what makes us different from toddlers) actually does work? He said that given enough time you could become fluent in japanese just from listening without any kinds of aids, and that MIA and AJATT are simply methods to make the process more efficient. I haven't seen any linguistic studies that support this theory however.

Many amerilards seem to be upset about the original soundtrack being in the game instead of the toonami one or whatever it was. I've listened to some of the american soundtrack and it didn't fit dragon ball at all.

i'm not claiming it's your case, but it might be for others.

some people could definitely get fooled.
one example already is these guys who think any girl who happens to be nice to them is down to fuck.
to me its obvious who is just being friendly all the time, and not really a friend

You're just starting out so when you're doing horribly that's fine.
>12.1s
too slow. try vocab recognition cards at max 5s.
>again count 35.2
dismal. anki is for memorizing what you understand. Real objects that you're familiar with are the easiest for this very reason. Stop and check if you even really understand the english/meaning part.
>learn 137
That's fine at the start but the rule of thumb is if you do x cards a day you'll get to 5x pretty quickly and 10x eventually.

i think you should relax with those reviews and just read something while also doing few reps here and there

VN core 1250, not sure if I have large enough vocab to get to reading just yet as it's been less than a week though I think I should be able to start after just one more week if I focus more on meaning and less on pronunciation, I could probably double my daily cards if I did that.

>> No.22685036

> pronunciation+meaning
I think it's practically the case for all.
pronunciation is very important unless you're only interested in reading the meaning. it's a far cry from the guy who learned french words for scrabble but the similarity is there. plus it's going to be very helpful in distinguishing words that have similar meaning.

Is Matt a charlatan?
Sometimes he backs up his claims with decades old research that has been debunked time again.

Look at this shit for example. It has been proven that just keeping the beginning and ending letters of words in the same place won't help at all if you start moving around consonants and vowels at will or use this method in words longer than 10+ letters.

>> No.22685248

> start moving around consonants and vowels at will
Can you elaborate on this? I imagine you're not talking about the letters moving around in real time while you're reading.

>(as in it remember the field and the position corresponding to other audio files in the same field on the card)
u should have just been more organized and made separate audio fields for word and sentence
placeholder shit is needlessly complicated and the plugin should just try to fill a dedicated field for any card where that field is empty
u think that feature is a good idea is because u fucked up 10000 cards
u can start with a simpler scripting project to split the audio field in ur existing deck
