it'd be better if they just make the whole body robotic. It seems like all android attempts slam straight into the depths of uncanny valley because they insist on plastering on a "realistic" face. Ugh.

I wrote an English paper on this subject back in 2001. The teacher was satisfied with the writing, but found the description "unlikely".
It's been 8 years and it ain't "unlikely" anymore.

Going a bit off topic here...

Specifically humanoid robots with lifelike faces and hands, and otherwise metal/plastic bodies.
The face and hands were all that needed to be lifelike for everyday interaction - the rest of the body covered by clothes was heavily shielded against heat, blastwaves, radiation, etc. The inside of the body carried a number of frozen embryos.
The idea was that the robots would survive a possible human extinction and raise a "backup mankind" afterwards.

Ahh... it was good being 16.
