What's a reasonable amount of time to spend on your flashcards? I feel like it takes me way too long to get through mine. I'm like 1300 words in to a core 2K deck, only learning the default 20 new words a day, but it takes me like an hour to work through my reviews plus the new cards.

Vocabulary is fine but I just can't get grammar to stick in my head. Even if I make example sentence cards, I can drill the sentence into my head but I won't remember the actual logic behind why the sentence is what it is.

I think you should start doing immersion on lighter stuff like children books and song lyrics. Extract some texts from easy japanese NKH and try understanding everything in the sentence.
Don't let the elitists fool you. It'll will take you at the least a year and a half for you to get used enough to the language and have enough vocabulary for the language to even begin to make sense to you. You'll be threading in the dark for a long period until then.

Krashen and Kauffman mentioned this in their interview where they said that content must be interesting but the issue is that most interesting content is at a much higher difficulty where as children's books are lower difficulty but not interesting or engaging enough. I think krashen said something about it depending on how much noise you are able to deal with and you should try to understand everything 100 percent and to skip ahead of something was too difficult. There are periods of time where you'll be doing focused study i.e looking up vocabulary and grammar of the media you're using to study and there are periods of time where you should do some passive learning as well. Yup, but try having a rest period of at least 1 day between the 2 sessions. You can learn the things you've copypasted till then.

Also, one more thing I wish I knew when I was learning jap.
My first grammar book was also genki. But it only gives you the basic of the basic of the grammar to understand the language. I've found far too much weird grammar that I had to context no justsu my way out of.
This site here gives you samples of grammar from jlpt N5 up to jlpt N1. Everything you'll ever need to learn unless you're into classic literature. This could have literally saved me hundreds of hours of study
https://jlptsensei.com/jlpt-n4-grammar-list/

I recommend you to start learning at your own pace from N4 onwards.

Would you say his opinions language and things like grammar and input are correct? For example in a few of his videos he mentions that grammar books should be used more as a reference rather than a learning material, for example he says that when you come across a grammar point to refer to it in a grammar book, understand it but than get back to reading rather than learning from the grammar book like a textbook

>> No.22476033

>>22475998
yeah, he's pretty much right about that. you can look watch every single curedolly video and through tae kim or imabi all you want to, but it's not gonna bring you any closer to making natural-sounding sentences in japanese.
you can even do all of the n5-n1 textbooks or read the entirity of the dojg + do core10k, and you'll still sound like a dumb gaijin who might know lots of japanese words/grammar points, and might be able to form structurally correct sentences in japanese, but that might still fishily have a strong english odour to them.
or you can do what the miaers and qm do by talking to people in japanese replicating lines you've gotten from anime/youtube videos/novels, which won't sound terribly bad, but you'd still be limited to saying stuff you've heard or read, and be unsure what to say in any situation where you'd have to completely improvise.

>Input hypothesis
mostly agree on that, but i still think it's necessary to in some way or another force yourself to associate your thoughts with words and expressions in your target language in order to be able to produce them.
>Acquisition-learning hypothesis
not too sure on this one, but here's some of what i can say from my experience trying to learn english, german, and japanese:
it makes more sense to learn words as used in a context familiar to me than it is to learn a set of words completely in isolation, or in the context of a textbook used only inside of classroom settings.
i can try learning grammar/pronunciation off a grammar book just as i can learn it off a teacher or off a friend/family member, but it might not start to make sense to me until i read/hear it often enough, and it won't become natural for me until i've tried using it enough times while speaking it. i don't think it ever becomes subconscious or unconscious. it just becomes habitual.
Monitor hypothesis
similar to the previous one, but i don't think it's necessary to learn certain rules if you've never been exposed to a situation where you'd see something else being used.
>Natural order hypothesis
no idea about this one, but I assume that stuff that's most similar to how your native language (or another language that you know very well) works will be what you will acquire most easily in your non-native language. otherwise, it'll be what you'll most often come across.
>Affective filter hypothesis
it probably does play some role, but I still think that high verbal iq people (people with asperger's syndrome & women) are at an advantage, and that it becomes harder to acquire stuff as you get older.

in this case, it's not impossible to believe that 正直 could get mixed up with 素直 (simple misreading mistake), but it feels like it wouldn't make sense to put 素直 in place of 正直, because i feel like they're distinct enough in terms of how they're used so as to not be easily exchanged. it doesn't seem like 素直 would be used while asking for a person's true opinion. rather it might be used to describe a person's character.

When it comes to language learning, oftentimes "improvement" and "the feeling of improvement" don't correlate very well, and this gets many learners into trouble. For example, watching the same episode 10 times will lead to the "feeling of improvement", since you'll understand it very well after the 10th time. But, how much of that is simply you memorizing that specific episode?

Just to be clear, I think that oftentimes some repetition can be very useful. I'm mostly saying that intensely studying very small chunks of language can "feel" very productive, but not that much of it is likely to transfer to general ability.

It's better to continually consume new input, in order to provide your brain with as much i+1 input as possible. If you take some random passage and study it to death, most of it won't actually be i+1, so you won't actually be able to acquire it.

Morphman is trying to optimize a problem based on a theory that's most likely retarded. It supposes you can most effectively learn by reading sentences where you don't know one missing word.

It seems absurd to me to read random sentences in the first place and as far as I can tell it completely disregards grammatical structures as usual so the only way this is judged is by single vocabulary words.

>Why do I get the feeling the everyone on r/learn Japanese overestimates their ability
It's because they pay money for stupid shit like textbooks, language courses and subscription scams like duolingo/wanikani. They seem to think throwing money on things is the "correct" way to learn a language. They seem to be unaware of the fact that everybody learns languages naturally as a baby without the use of phone apps and community college courses, and you can do it again as an adult.

just finished garo vanishing line and i'd probably give it a 5/10. fairly shallow characters and a story that had potential but fizzled out into generic bullshit. the road trip and one off episodes were more enjoyable than the main arc. enjoyed this bitch and her big tits. the animation was also decent but the action scenes were way too chaotic with the camera always fucking spinning and shit.

all in all, don't watch it if you like good anime but if you're bored it's better than shitposting ITT. stay tuned for my next review of mediocre anime soon.

I should have realized a long time ago that Cure Dolly was the only eceleb worth paying attention too. The written insights on immersion on the website articles may have been common sense but they felt clearer and more efficient than any of Matt/AJATT's ideas. Pic related stood out to me, I have heard both Steve Kaufman and Matt praise Natives as being the end all be all for clarification of language learning progress but the problems of that approach were never made apparent as far as I know.

because there are no cons to it you dumb fuck. matt doesn't say "ask a native speaker if X is right". he says "listen to thousands of hours of native speech".

You're not even on the same page
>he says "listen to thousands of hours of native speech".
I'm not talking about immersion, I'm talking about how he literally says to find natives to talk to to gauge your progress.

Not my words man, it's some thing Steve Kaufman and Matt has talked about so don't act like it's some idea some random anon pulled out his ass. I can't remember if they used the word "gauge" but I'm not about to find the exact videos cause this argument really isn't that big of a deal.

yea matt has spoken a lot more about knowing what's right or wrong based on input than "gauging relative to what a native says is right" so it doesn't matter anyway.

is it worth doing RTK or some other shit for production after i've already been reading and shit for a good while? for a long time i didn't care but only knowing kanji recognition is starting to bother me.
i figure i can just ignore RTK oddities when i already have associated vocab and speed things up that way but maybe there's a more efficient method after learning for a while. has anybody else here done this?
