What's a reasonable amount of time to spend on your flashcards? I feel like it takes me way too long to get through mine. I'm like 1300 words in to a core 2K deck, only learning the default 20 new words a day, but it takes me like an hour to work through my reviews plus the new cards.

Vocabulary is fine but I just can't get grammar to stick in my head. Even if I make example sentence cards, I can drill the sentence into my head but I won't remember the actual logic behind why the sentence is what it is.

I think you should start doing immersion on lighter stuff like children books and song lyrics. Extract some texts from easy japanese NKH and try understanding everything in the sentence.
Don't let the elitists fool you. It'll will take you at the least a year and a half for you to get used enough to the language and have enough vocabulary for the language to even begin to make sense to you. You'll be threading in the dark for a long period until then.

Well I was thinking about reading yotsubato soon so maybe that would help. The problem is that most of the stuff that interests me is more difficult. Krashen and Kauffman mentioned this in their interview where they said that content must be interesting but the issue is that most interesting content is at a much higher difficulty where as children's books are lower difficulty but not interesting or engaging enough. I think krashen said something about it depending on how much noise you are able to deal with and you should try to understand everything 100 percent and to skip ahead of something was too difficult. It was an interesting video

You should do that until you finally memorize that bit of grammar, of course. There are periods of time where you'll be doing focused study i.e looking up vocabulary and grammar of the media you're using to study and there are periods of time where you should do some passive learning as well. (I was a fucking sperg so I mostly did the first one). My first grammar book was also genki. But it only gives you the basic of the basic of the grammar to understand the language. I've found far too much weird grammar that I had to context no justsu my way out of.
This site here gives you samples of grammar from jlpt N5 up to jlpt N1. Everything you'll ever need to learn unless you're into classic literature. This could have literally saved me hundreds of hours of study

you can even do all of the n5-n1 textbooks or read the entirity of the dojg + do core10k, and you'll still sound like a dumb gaijin who might know lots of japanese words/grammar points, and might be able to form structurally correct sentences in japanese, but that might still fishily have a strong english odour to them.

When it comes to language learning, oftentimes "improvement" and "the feeling of improvement" don't correlate very well, and this gets many learners into trouble. For example, watching the same episode 10 times will lead to the "feeling of improvement", since you'll understand it very well after the 10th time. But, how much of that is simply you memorizing that specific episode?

Just to be clear, I think that oftentimes some repetition can be very useful. I'm mostly saying that intensely studying very small chunks of language can "feel" very productive, but not that much of it is likely to transfer to general ability.

It's better to continually consume new input, in order to provide your brain with as much i+1 input as possible. If you take some random passage and study it to death, most of it won't actually be i+1, so you won't actually be able to acquire it.

It seems absurd to me to read random sentences in the first place and as far as I can tell it completely disregards grammatical structures as usual so the only way this is judged is by single vocabulary words.

How this is supposed to be better than just reading a fucking book I don't know. I think it's exclusively for Anki addcits and best to be disregarded by anyone else.

just finished garo vanishing line and i'd probably give it a 5/10. fairly shallow characters and a story that had potential but fizzled out into generic bullshit. the road trip and one off episodes were more enjoyable than the main arc. enjoyed this bitch and her big tits. the animation was also decent but the action scenes were way too chaotic with the camera always fucking spinning and shit.

all in all, don't watch it if you like good anime but if you're bored it's better than shitposting ITT. stay tuned for my next review of mediocre anime soon.

It was a news apps for hobbies like anime/seiyuu/games etc. that used cute characters and customization and it was a fun way to practice Japanese. It got shut down so I'm looking for something similar.

I should have realized a long time ago that Cure Dolly was the only eceleb worth paying attention too. The written insights on immersion on the website articles may have been common sense but they felt clearer and more efficient than any of Matt/AJATT's ideas. Pic related stood out to me, I have heard both Steve Kaufman and Matt praise Natives as being the end all be all for clarification of language learning progress but the problems of that approach were never made apparent as far as I know.
