Anyone here looking forward to Gotou Mariko's new full album? After the blast that was her comeback mini year ago, I've been stoked for her new record quite a bit.

Wow, this is really good news. Their collaboration on Lilac and their full album were incredible. I'm genuinely happy that Jun is having all this new projects going on.

The new Hiraswa was supposed to be out this year but he said it got delayed because of his Fuji Rock performance, I think rehearsing for it and making new arrangements took up too much time maybe? It's supposed to be more guitar oriented like his recent Kaku P-model album, but it's under the Hirasawa name. There's currently an ARG thing going on which is confusing as usual haha.

Yeah the new Jun and Vampillia will be all original songs which is great. They started recording it a year ago so surely it should be almost finished by now.

Also, I'm especially looking forward to the Yapoos album because even though she's been performing with the same members, she said she wouldn't do anything under the Yapoos name again until her voice was properly back. She lost a lot of range not because of age but because she hurt her back which made her not sing for a while, which is why she sits down when performing mostly.

Well if you think that their own thing means playing fast/busy paced cutesy/cheerful songs I honestly think that a little future intervention from Sony won't hurt because their signature style sooner or later will grow out of trend and when that comes, they need to create solid songs in other style. The main rhythm section (their bassist, keyboardist, and drummer) are skilled enough as a musician though from my limited knowledges so I believe that they can be a bigger band if they don't solely rely on their recent gimmick

Anyone listen to Si_ku's stuff? She's the artist that does most of Kikuo's album and PV artwork. She made like 3 albums collabing with Kikuo, but apparently he was more in charge of the mixing and mastering.

She has a really unique sound that I'd like to find more of. Some of her stuff is ambient (downtempo?) and the rest of it I can't put a genre label to. Some of her stuff reminds me of Perfume.

They do, guitarist Kitsutaka who joined the band in the late 80s/early 90s is probably one of the best japanese guitarists, and was in a couple metal bands before.
Kinniku Shoujo Tai isn't a strictly metal band as they have a very eclectic style, started as a really strange sort of experimental new wave/post-punk band , with some hard rock, then incorporated heavy metal, but their albums are always a mix of many different styles. Vocalist Kenji Ohtsuki is also very particular and definitely not your regular metal vocalist.

Haven't been a fan of SK in quite some time (since 2013 or thereabouts). They just didn't make music I enjoyed. First nine Sakura taisen lives (concerts and kayou-shows) have been uploaded to Amazon Prime Video. Don't really have time right now but if any rips won't show up till beginning of the next year I'll probably buy PrimeVideo access and rip it. I really love those lives. Their "we're not VK REEEEEEEE" phase was in the mid 2000s, when they started touring the US with nu metal bands and wanted to dissociate with VK completely, even Kyo asking fans to stop coming to shows cosplaying DEG's older looks.
But I think ever since around Uroboros and later, they started incorporating some VK elements back, and in recent years Kyo went back to VK antics pretty hard.
"once VK, always VK".
Not that VK is a bad or good thing, it's just a vague way to describe bands that might or might not wear make up and fancy clothes.
They're related to Free Will (Dynamite Tommy), so yeah they're VK in that strict sense.

That intro is really nice. It has to be difficult to tweak the structure of such an old song without butchering what made it unique, and they did a really good job. At their best, the band really sounds like a new direction for music, as if what they produce is a blueprint for something to come. 2010 had a lot of releases like this for some reason.

It's cool you watch their streams - I've tried but my Japanese is too amateur. From what you've seen, do you know if they'll still be doing shows around summertime next year? I've heard about the break-up, but I hope at least noko will be performing in some capacity so I can catch him live. I'll be there all next spring and summer, so it would be sad if I couldn't find a way to see them.

Might have been a mistranslation if you read that somewhere, but it's just the last one with all the original members. If you consider the fact that they used to be advertised as being "on the verge of breaking up at any moment" back when they debuted, having lasted 10 years is quite a feat.
As for what you can expect going forward, they're going to release new material, but most likely nothing too big or anytime soon. He's already decided on a theme though (guitar rock focused), and is playing around with the idea of it being an EP or mini-album.
There's also a new PV he filmed with his dad in September, but he (as of the last time he spoke about it) isn't quite satisfied with the song yet so he can't say when it'll drop.

So after breaking down and going with Spotify Premium at least fo the 90 day trial I noticed that there's a nice amount of Japanese stuff. Specifically I'm feeling nostalgia for my middle school/high school days so can someone recommend some good/essential Y2K era J-Pop or rock or whatever?

I've been on a kick going through some Namie and Utada stuff but I don't really know what's essential listening outside of them and the other big ones from that time period (i.e. Ayu, BoA, maybe Koda Kumi?).

Number Girl is pretty much obligatory. Turn of the century rock band, a bit on the heavy side, but also incredibly popular and influential, and incredibly good in my opinion. All three of their major label albums should be on Spotify, along with some singles and live albums, but their indie album is also worth a listen if you want to track that down.

GOING STEADY and the first two albums of their successor band GING NANG BOYZ, were also quite popular for their time, if a bit more punk rock and not exactly mainstream. Both really captured the ethos of what it was like to be a teenager growing up in late 90s/early 2000s Japan so I'd recommend them for that at least. Both should be on Spotify.

I wouldn't call them essential but ELLEGARDEN has a very nostalgic sound if that makes sense, and for a lot of 20-somethings they were a big part of their youth. They were also quite popular in the early 2000s, and caused a bit of a stir when they announced they would reform and play again a few times last year or so. I think they should be available on Spotify in their entirety.

Number Girl I'm more than aware of and they're one of my favorites. Honestly I've never liked their studio albums though; they always lack energy, feel sloppy (not in a good way) and the production never seems to be sound right. They're one of those groups that are far better live than they are on an album from everything I've seen; way more energy, way more creativity, everything sounds tighter and such. The Sawayakana Ensou version of Destruction Baby, slowed down to be more of a reggae/dub song, for instance completely shits all over the album version.

I'm definitely a little more familiar with the rock side at least mid and late 2000s. Number Girl, Ogre You Asshole and I think The Band Apart were my gateways into that stuff. I remember when I was first discovering stuff really liking Base Ball Bear, Sparta Locals, Winnie, Fujifabric and FLiP. FLiP especially is frustrating. They were probably my favorite band around the time of Michi Evolution and then the label killed them.

I kind of agree, they really are good live. Mukai's project after Number Girl, Zazen Boys, is also similar in that respect, they're absolutely amazing live and the albums don't do their skills justice (still great though if you ask me).
I was going to suggest Base Ball Bear actually but I tried keeping it around the first few years of 2000.
I have seen the other groups you mentioned in passing on youtube but haven't given them a proper listening to yet. I haven't listened to them yet either but have you tried Art-School? I've seen their name floating quite often when it comes to 2000s rock.
