Why bother? After reading some Hideo Levy's novels (like 'Room Where the Star-Spangled Banner Cannot Be Heard" or 千々にくだけて) or Shusaku Endo's work (like 'Silence', 'Deep river' or 'Samurai') I came to the conclusion that fluency is a bit useless in the context of Japan. It's ok for your own satisfaction I guess, but there's no point for a Westerner in becoming a part of their unbelievably petty, close-minded society! There are 2 reasons for that:

number 1: they'll never accept you as their own anyway! (Levy's work talks at length about that)

number 2: their culture is too cruel, distrustful of intellectual questioning and lacking in transcendence for us (Endo's novels do a great job at describing how spiritually and intellectually bankrupt Japanese culture is)

watch anime with english subtitles for thousands of hours. along the way picked up that hanasu means to speak, inazuma is the name of a wwii-era imperial japanese navy ship whose name means lightning, and denwa is phone.
then learn some kanji + vocabulary, and notice that hanasu is spelt 話す, inazuma is spelt 電, and denwa is spelt 電+話.

before writing, the japanese language used to have nouns, particles, and adjective-verbs. after that, writing was first imported over from china. most of the loanwords from china were nouns. somewhere along the way, they decided to make up their own scripts that used extremely simplified versions of chinese characters, which ended up being kana, and tied chinese characters over to japanese words with the same or nearly the same meaning, but appended some kana at the end of every single verb and adjective. since chinese particles don't really correspond to japanese particles, japanese people had to transcribe their particles into kana, some of which have only one syllable/mora (like へ), and others which have two syllables/morae (like から).

kanjidamage has words + kanji (so kinda like wanikani or kklc, except that it's free). it doesn't attempt to be complete (since there's over 50k characters you'd have to memorize if you wanted to be a completionist), but it does at least give you more than enough words + kanji to feel very comfortable reading, and without having to make you remember kanji solely through english keywords.

Fucking Anki for kana is overkill, it only complicated the process, just practice the characters by hand, download a kana practice app for your phone and grind it, and take Japanese words that you transcribe from roomaji to kana (I did it with lyrics) and vice versa. You'll get used to it in no time. You don't need spaced repetition for this, you just need to practice, every day, you won't forget kana because you always use them.
