Post theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSsjD6dJK5s

You guys are only fueling me with your pathetic shitposting. The howling of wounded dogs.

I have surpassed you all by an unimaginable amount and redefined the limits of what is possible to learn in a short time using a method that is maximally efficient. But to be honest the effort I have invested up until now has been mediocre and far below what my full potential could give.

Now I have gotten a taste of true power, I have seen the future. A future in which I make use of everything in my ability and become a god of Japanese learning and acquiring unparalleled wisdom.

Having said that, I will leave you all behind for some time. The road I will walk is a cruel one and I don't need whining babies eternally stuck on the same place dragging me down.

When I will be back I will be man reborn. And you'll whine all the same, like the pathetic gremlins and lost souls that you are, but I will have changed. I will have become a being that you can all only dream of approaching. And that will be the real Quizmaster Reborn.

As such I bid you farewell. This is my final post for the coming time and anyone after this is a pretender. Until our next meeting in a new future.

Why bother? After reading some Hideo Levy's novels (like 'Room Where the Star-Spangled Banner Cannot Be Heard" or 千々にくだけて) or Shusaku Endo's work (like 'Silence', 'Deep river' or 'Samurai') I came to the conclusion that fluency is a bit useless in the context of Japan. It's ok for your own satisfaction I guess, but there's no point for a Westerner in becoming a part of their unbelievably petty, close-minded society! There are 2 reasons for that:

number 1: they'll never accept you as their own anyway! (Levy's work talks at length about that)

number 2: their culture is too cruel, distrustful of intellectual questioning and lacking in transcendence for us (Endo's novels do a great job at describing how spiritually and intellectually bankrupt Japanese culture is)

my method:
watch anime with english subtitles for thousands of hours. along the way picked up that hanasu means to speak, inazuma is the name of a wwii-era imperial japanese navy ship whose name means lightning, and denwa is phone.
then learn some kanji + vocabulary, and notice that hanasu is spelt 話す, inazuma is spelt 電, and denwa is spelt 電+話.

Ok, so anons said the kana are phonetics.

before writing, the japanese language used to have nouns, particles, and adjective-verbs. after that, writing was first imported over from china. most of the loanwords from china were nouns. somewhere along the way, they decided to make up their own scripts that used extremely simplified versions of chinese characters, which ended up being kana, and tied chinese characters over to japanese words with the same or nearly the same meaning, but appended some kana at the end of every single verb and adjective. since chinese particles don't really correspond to japanese particles, japanese people had to transcribe their particles into kana, some of which have only one syllable/mora (like へ), and others which have two syllables/morae (like から).
if you wanna know why へ is pronounced え or は when used as a particle is pronounced わ, it's got to do with historical sound changes. there's a bunch of other words that used to be spelt with ふ and pronounced as う or ひ and pronounced as い, but got reformed over to their correct transcriptions around the end of wwii.

kanjidamage has words + kanji (so kinda like wanikani or kklc, except that it's free). it doesn't attempt to be complete (since there's over 50k characters you'd have to memorize if you wanted to be a completionist), but it does at least give you more than enough words + kanji to feel very comfortable reading, and without having to make you remember kanji solely through english keywords.
ixrec is kinda like tae kim, but it's at least got longer example sentences that are split up word-by-word, so as to not make you feel uncomfortable with long sentences.

if you've watched enough anime, you should already have more than a perfectly solid vocabulary solid japanese vocabulary base.
the first time i went through the vncore1250 list, i remember i saw tons of words i'd remembered hearing and having a pretty accurate idea on because of all that anime i'd been watching.

once you've been at it a month or two and got a handle on the basics, start a mining deck (card format should be: kanji spelling on the front; kanji reading, word definition and source sentence on the back).

* pick one from this page with a score of <4500 under the "freqlist 92.5% Target" column:

if you don't like whatever you picked, drop it and choose a new one. there are quite a few good ones there.

I'm pretty sure most of those people have watched hundreds of anime with english subs before starting, you need to watch it raw to actually learn, watching english subs doesn't do nearly anything

leeches seemed good to me in theory and i had it enabled for months but it turns out there were relatively basic/common words i kept forgetting even though i encountered them while reading. and it didn't feel right for me to suspend those cards, at least not for as long as they were suspended. so i disabled leech suspension recently and it's been great. my review time has been cut by like 30-50% because i'm not as nervous about suspending common words which i feel like i shouldn't be neglecting. maybe once you're more advanced it becomes more useful.

it varies. you aren't actually a teacher, at least you aren't meant to be one. you're an assistant. in some places you're basically a mp3 player in human form that the teacher asks to pronounce stuff so the students can hear a native say it. in others you participate a bit more in the lessons. i've also heard of people who work at multiple schools and people who essentially teach the entire class including preparing the materials. you most likely won't be spending way more hours than normal at the school itself but if you get shafted like that you'll be doing a lot of work at home preparing for classes.

they aren't allowed to do that technically but idk if it's hard to complain about it or if the gaijin who do this work are just mega autistic or what. for me it was a normal workload with normal hours.

Question for my anime card bros: How many new cards do you keep banked up at a time? I'm doing 20 a day and created about a week's worth, which has been nice as I remember more about where the words come from. I feel like if I save up too many words ahead of time I might lose this advantage.

To test, just check out any LN on the new library site >>22299920 and click the
>縦書き/横書き
link at the top of the page. Try mousing over some of the text with Nazeka or Yomichan and report back with
a) whether or not the add-on works normally for you or not, and
b) what version of Firefox you're on.

According to
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1472546
this performance issue should've been fixed in version 70, but that's the version I'm on right now and it is definitely not fixed for me.

so no massive lag or slowdown when mousing through the text for you?

this is weird. assuming i'm understanding the bugzilla page properly, 69 is supposed to be a pre-bugfix version.

i can't understand what could be wrong on my end to be causing this in any case. i'm almost certain there's nothing wrong with my computer since when i try vertical text in chromium with yomichan it works absolutely fine. speaking of which, god, yomichan is so much faster in chromium. it's on par with nazeka in terms of speed, whereas in firefox yomichan is really slow for me even with horizontal text pages.

well, i knew nearly 1000 words on the vncore deck after watching 350 anime, even though i wasn't aware of that back then, since i did core6k for a bit of a while before looking at vncore and finding all of those words that i'd been learning throughout all those years that didn't show up in core2k.

dojg is for looking shit up
tae kim is a guide to get some basic understanding of japanese grammar
the sensible thing is to quickly go through tae kim to kind of see what's going on and then to read stuff in japanese and consult dojg

>> No.22306945

>>22306908
yeah.
tae kim teaches you about japanese grammar the way you'd teach a retarded 4 year old to draw with crayons by tracing over cartoons, whereas the dojg is literally just a dictionary for japanese grammar points, that tells you what each thing means & gives a few examples for each, akin to a set of photographs/pictures of exemplary objects a painter could use as inspiration for specific details in his works.
