the main reason people grow to hate anki is not because of the time reviews take, but the constant effort. specifically, the effort of trying to recall each word. although the magic of spaced repetition software is in the "spaced repetition" part, somehow we've all become convinced that it has to be spaced repetition + forced testing, to work at all. but like this anon posted yesterday
>Flashcards work by repeatedly exposing you to a particular thing that you want to remember. If you keep running into a particular thing over and over again, your brain will make the judgement that this thing is important to your survival as well, and it will be committed to memory. <-- (This is the mechanic that spaced-repetition exploits.)

spaced repetition does not require strict testing to be effective. the brain naturally remembers stuff it sees repeatedly over well-spaced intervals, even if you don't *try* to remember it (this is the premise behind "just read" advocates). in fact, trying to force recall in anki can lead to bad neural pathways being formed when, in desperation to recall something, you keep recalling the wrong answer again and again.

with autocards, you have the word and definition on the front. reading on the back. the cards flow completely automatically. 4 seconds front, 2 seconds back, next card (you can change the lengths as you wish, those are just my settings). you do not force recall.

auto-cards or 楽cards mean, you don't have to try to remember anything. the repetition will do the work for you. all you have to do is look at the word, and read whatever information on the card helps you understand what a word means, then how it's read. after a few reps, upon seeing the word, that information will automatically arise in your mind and you won't need to look at anything else on the card anymore. you'll just see the word and know it. then you can press enter if you wish to go to the next card quicker, or just wait for the automatic timer to take you to the next word.

because it's so low effort, you can do 50 to 100 new words a day and not get worn out (if you do that many it's still best to review in small bursts throughout the day). the only time to fail a card is if its reached a relatively long interval (20 days or so) and its still not secure in your memory.

this is great for people on the verge of quitting anki out of frustration about forced recall, but who still want the benefits of spaced repetition. with 楽cards, if you don't remember something, there is no penalty. you just get those repeated spaced exposures without the stress.
