What's your favorite of the "otaku tourist traps"? I went in skeptical to the main three (Akihabara, Nakano Broadway, Denden Town), but really ended up having a lot of fun at all of them for different reasons.

Are there any major otaku areas that aren't tourist traps?
To be honest I loved my time at Akiba. Didn't visit the other two however.
To me it didn't have a "tourist trap" feel to much of it, outside of the maids and the likely highly marked up merch in some stores. That said, I had no frame of reference for what constitutes as a Japanese tourist trap.

I've only been to Akiba but I was shocked at how many maid cafes there were. There were girls literally every 5m. There didn't seem to be any westerners going into them at all either.

Western trash like me went in one. Went to Maidreaming. Was semi crowded I suppose. Only 2 other western groups inside aside from me.
The second that entered was clearly a family not knowing what they were getting into. Mom dad and their kid. The look on the dads face was funny. The rest was some weeb friends, and then a Japanese kid that honestly looked unhappy to be there, but was alone. Quietly ordered his food. Took a photo of it when it came out, ate it, and left. Saw some older Japanese guys come in to. Looked like they'd just gotten off work honestly. And a couple other normal looking Japanese people.
