I think you're confusing the "ex-wife" sentences for what is obviously meant to be Takano. The transcended death/mad scientist/Ark project are pretty big tells.

As to why Ark should be a big tell, Takano is working primarily on... a temporal ark. That is IIRC pretty much called a temporal ark by the VN before Toujirou even says that his ex-wife is working on the Ark. That's a pretty big clue.

The factions so far, unsorted, seems to be: 3 Kings + Jestress (Jestress has a secondary agenda), Seshat who is independent since her Order splintered from the 3 Kings, Toujirou, Mom (whoever or whatever it is), the Translators/Order of the Eternal Ark, and the poor pieces represented by the Order of the Public Bath.

Each of their goals, save for Public Bath, are unclear at best. Even the Three Kings are not well understood.

The Three Kings says they want to shape humanity's future by culling 99.9% of it, to get it on the right track and possibly to prevent "Them" from creating hell on earth, or something. Not clear on particulars.

Seshat wants to save humanity from "Them", doesn't care about the Three Kings's plan for destruction of the human race, but isn't really supporting it. She's just in the guideline because the time isn't right for saving the human race right now.

Toujirou, I have no idea. He has a plan with "Mother", potentially one with his ex-wife, is manipulating Miyao for some reasons, and all that... for something.

Mom seems to care about Miyao, and yet built him in order to... potentially kill someone? Or do something? Unclear.

Takano's Translators are seeking knowledge from Beyond and keeping the Ark safe. Potentially to use it themselves. Takano doesn't seem to care about anything save knowledge and the Ark, and has a plan, but her plan is very remote and disconnected from seemingly everyone else.

Then Takano came and said "fuck it", your artefacts are Revelations from God, and we can study them and become Gods ourselves, just apply some science! Then she created the Translators/Order of the Ark and became in effect heretical.

When Seshat shuts down the Wisdom brought by Gray, she just did what her order did for centuries or possibly millennia: hiding the strange otherworldly artefacts from public knowledge, and hoarding them.

Very, very valid point. Let me think about it some more. The issue with your idea is that it doesn't make sense in the overall narrative, because that would validate the VR metastory, but then the VR metastory as it is is thoroughly incompatible with Three Kings, Seshat, Wisdom, Takano, Mother and Father.

If Miyao is really the unconscious Game Master of a virtual reality, then the Three Kings and Seshat are unnecessary. Wisdom makes only a small amount of sense. Takano doesn't fit. And what about the "programming" of Mother and Father? Did they program the game master of a VR? Why? What does it even mean? Why would it even be an issue?

I can't easily validate any VR interpretation because Ryukishi was a fucking bitch, and while certaintly hinting at it, constructed a story that made it difficult to consider seriously.

The Ninth Prime Chivalric Orders are only subordinates to the Three Kings - Jestress has an additional agenda of revenge and/or redemption, though subordinate to the 3Ks. I liked it, but not as much as ep1 of higurashi or umineko, guess it's due to a matter of preference: I liked the more grounded, murder mystery plot and down to earth setting plus the fact that a lot more information was kept hidden at first. music's better than higurashi so far at least.

I didn't dislike the characters (except jayden who's really annoying and unlikeable and I'm glad his presence was greatly reduced in the latter half of the story) but they really couldn't click with me, doesn't help that like half the script is political and military discussion rather than character focused like the other half is. previous wtc did have that but nowhere near as much of course. outside of Warcat, Mole and the 3 public bath order captains, the rest of the gauntlet knights felt more like fluff, basically finishing each other's sentences for the most part in a big circlejerk about the morality of what a wall of peace supporter should be and doing their quirks over and over without getting many dialogue lines, like the love triangle girl trio. I'm awaiting future chapters to get them to know better.

the TIPS however made me like Warcat and Mole more as they showed a lot of personality and relatability. Boosted my opinion of Koshka and Gunhild especially. I think the first TIPS should've been in the main story.

also is it me or does this one not follow past wtc's loop mechanics and instead just goes through like a traditional story structure? I got that from the preview at the end.

Ryukishi hasn't been able to finish a game in one release since Umineko ended. Every single Season of Rose Guns had part of the previous season attached to it and only went through a little more than half of the current season before ending. Rose Guns Season 4 ended up being kind of rushed in part due to this and in part due to the Dreaded Japanese Cold.

Phase 2 will more likely than not have the rest of Phase 1, and then start Phase 2.

Higurashi is always worth reading. I'm even contemplating re-reading the whole thing at some point. For me the appeal is less in the mystery and more in the setup. Umineko is basically a matter of preference. There's the originals translated by WH, and the newer ones that change the sprites and add voice acting. Arguably, the newer sprites are less expressive and the voice acting interferes with the tone of the writing at many points. Ignore the flowcharts for now. There's Higurashi, Higurashi Kai, Umineko, and Umineko Chiru, each respectively making up WTC1-4. There's a lot of side content but all of it is supplementary to those 4 parts. Some releases will divide each of those components into 4 episodes since that's how it's formatted. Also, you could read the old Mangagamer release of Matsuribayashi (arc 8) if it's not out yet on Steam by the time you finish the rest. The old translation was decent by the time they got to that arc. Just make sure to find a clean copy without any graphic patches and just apply the "music" and "sound effect" patches from the wiki to more or less fix Mangagamer's hot mess. The sound effect patch is important, don't skip it.

After that, you could download Saikoroshi and its fan translation. It's a great finale for the series and was never officially translated, so there is no bullshit and the translation is pretty decent if a bit stiff.

The final scene was great, though a lot of it felt like incomplete glimpses of future developments, like a preview of Phase 2. I don't think this first phase was bad or anything. I just found the heavy focus on politics and social issues to be rather dull and drawn out. Some of it was good, like Tojirou's lectures on information gathering, but a lot of it was pretty repetitive, especially the walls of peace bit.

I would've preferred to see more interpersonal relationships and character development, since that's always been a hallmark of ryukishi's works. I get that there's a need to prioritize worldbuilding first given the setting, but I'm sad that a good half the cast only got basic development. Plus if there's no time loops then that really hinders the ability to flesh out the multi-faceted characters we've previously enjoyed. Take Lingji for example. She got a decent amount of screentime this phase, but there still wasn't much character development by WTC standards, and if she stays dead then that's all her character will ever amount to.

There's definitely some rough parts in Ciconia, but I don't think it's fundamentally different from Higurashi and Umineko. I remember finding the club activities cringe and boring in Higurashi, and the first half of Umineko's first episode really slow. Ryukishi was never perfect, especially in its first episode. The story afterwards always more than made up for it.

Sure, I'd have preferred less Wall of Peace and power of youth stuff and weird characters doing weird faces in that episode. Going by Ciconia's ending, there are definitely methods to Ryukishi's madness.

Did you completely miss the how consistently Miyao's order was shown to be completely naive? Miyao even thought that the planet dying meaning that the war wasn't going to take off was a good thing. And the game ends on Lingji, by far Miyao's biggest non-homo supporter, completely losing her faith in everything and putting on that Ark gauntlet.

The only adults that are shown to be complete bastards like that are these overly decorated military vets, who have pretty much no place in the world and were made obsolete overnight by miracle tech both on and off the battlefield, but even then they're abusing what power they have to take full advantage of them, and for the most part the children are going along with that without taking a stand for themselves. This is what being a piece pretty much means in Ciconia's context, and why Miyao trying to get off the chessboard is a straight metaphor for trying to overcome his social structure.

I feel like you probably also hated Persona 5 if you happen to have played that, if this went over your head here as well.

So let's try to recap. Hopefully this is mostly right.

God, "they" or "them" left behind a transcript of the future apocalypse in the form of the Revelations of Saint Ioannis. They're also supposedly monitoring humanity closely, and possibly left behind strange artefacts with bizarre powers called "Wisdom". Such artefacts have a date for name, which could be a clue toward their date of discovery (Tungunska and Mary Celeste) or something else.

An illuminati-like group forms with that knowledge. Those are the Three Kings. They seek to prevent this future by killing all of humanity, and hopefully starting back with some worthy survivors. They almost succeed with WW3 but were thwarted in the end by 8MS.

Prometheus splinters from that. They want humanity to win against "them", but aren't opposed to the Three Kings' plan. At some point, Toujirou becomes involved with both Prometheus and the Three Kings, apparently solidly in Prometheus' camp. He schemes something with Mother involving the creation of Miyao.

Ark is created, led by Vier. She seeks to translate the tech given by "them" and protect the Ark, or possibly use it for herself. Ark is considered highly heretical by the Three Kings, and probably Prometheus too, because of their use of Wisdom. The Three Kings try to shut it down, but fails, repeatedly.

The Three Kings, Prometheus, and Ark all have Gauntlet tech. Given the nature of Gauntlet tech being relatively new in-universe, it could be that Gauntlet tech is inherently a "them" technology, maybe something brought by Wisdom.

At some point the Geroy 4 Research Center becomes involved, which means, by association, at least a part of the AOU millitary has ties to either the Three Kings, Prometheus, or Ark. Or first hand knowledge of "them". They're also trying to hatch a plan for humanity by creating "Pandora", which could be the only one able to survive/continue to exist (?) when "they" come. Pandora is Koshka.

Somewhere along the lines, Gunhild becomes a high level member of that particular conspiracy, possibly backed by/spying for the Three Kings.

Not much, mostly fixing typos and the rare awkwardly phrased sentence. They also removed boku/warawa clarifications because it's stupid for normies and weebs already know all about it in the first place. Duct tape was more accurately translated as packing tape. And they removed the green text grimoire because it wasn't really needed and took you out of the story a bit.

Overall, it's a good version but I prefer the original with its animated rain and shit, even if the translation was slightly less polished. It was still a superb translation practically identical to the steam one. The biggest differences would be Chiester being called Siestas during the question arcs and the epitaph being worded a bit differently in the question arcs too.

I think it's his best, actually. I've always found R07's down to earth prose pretty comfy. Call it mediocre or whatever, I prefer it to most other writing styles.

I like all the characters so far, the girls are hot as fuck and the setting alone is amazing. At the end of First Phase humanity is pretty much dead. I could see Second Phase going forward with the reaping and the aftermath, but by Third Phase the loop will be assured. The story cannot really go on after everyone is dead forever, unless Ryukishi is willing to kill 95% of its cast and continue with one or two survivors for three entire episodes.

In all likeliness, though, Second Phase will be a timeloop.

Also remember that Takano said something to the sound of "We find wisdom between this world and the next, and this one is almost finished". Future Miyao also implies something like that, just like Koshka.

Now, it could be that the timeloop happens because everyone is injected into a VR simulation in the future, if they aren't already inside a VR sim in First Phase.

I finished the game like 2 days ago, but it's only now sinking in how huge Phase 1 was. In roughly 12-15 hours of text, Ryukishi had to
1. set up the world and its technology
2. set up the politics and individual nations, as well as their cultural values
3. introduce a fuckhuge number of characters
4. convincingly bring about Armageddon and burn it all down within the same Episode

What the fuck was he thinking? All things considered, it was a bit clumsy and repetitive at times (when is r07 not a bit clumsy though), but he fucking did it. The more I think back the more I feel like something was staring me in the face that I didn't quite absorb. There was so much crazy bullshit, a spiderweb of cults, lovecraftian influences, etc, that I feel like the wool got pulled over my eyes-- especially when you consider everything is Miyao's fault somehow. It's like he had the characters moralize about war and peace and politics only to say "HAHA FUCKERS, YOUR IDEALISM DOESN'T MEAN SHIT", which is such a huge gamble after investing so much time into "walls of peace" talk. There's plenty to speculate about, but I'm also afraid this isn't the type of story that lends itself well to speculation. The only thing I can really say is Phase 2 when?
