It's not just a matter of preference. The "updated" sprites and backgrounds often fail to create the appropiate atmosphere or portray emotions effectively. You are gimping your own experience if you use them.

Does any one knows if Trianthology is good? It has the same director as Ciconia and Saku, a guy named Nakao Boushi. The vndb page says he is even writing the script. I guess it's true because on his twitter he has a post talking about how he started studying to write a scene explaining the material of gears, and became interested in concrete. He traveled with Ryukishi to Finland last year too.

"Scripting" a VN is not the same as writing the actual script. The text is written by Ryuukishi. Boushi is only doing the technical stuff like making sprites appear and disappear, sound effects, scene transitions, etc. That's scripting.

I think you're right with the money. For 10,000 $ you probably couldn't voice Episode 1 alone when you consider that you have to pay not only for the VAs, but also technical aspect, new engine work, etc.

This is yet another price discussion, but I'm curious what are your thoughts regarding the possible outcomes.
a) Ciconia 1 is sold for 40 bucks but will feature 2-3-4 for free as DLC over the years. Basically early access so to speak
b) 2-3-4 will be additional DLC for a lower price
c) 2-3-4 are their own release, so they might be 40 bucks too.

While a looks like the best outcome for us, it is unlikely. The game is marketed as "Phase 1, To you the Repleacable ones". So instead of a series of game, it is specifically the first part of Ciconia. Also, 07th Expansion is still a doujin circle, so it is doubtful they are swimming in money to the point they can handle the bills and stuff like that without any additional revenue from 2-3-4.
So b and c are the most likely outcome, moreso that a isn't possible for nips who are going to buy the physical copy. It is also fair to assume Steam and MG cuts aren't that huge considering the physical copy is still 3.8k yen.

So the million dollar question: how much should 2-3-4 be each? I love Ryu's stories, but I think it isn't going to do well if the later episodes are sold more than 20 each. That would be a sweet spot of 100 bucks for the full series. Much more expensive than Higu and Umi, but still ok if he keeps dishing out 400k+ characters in the jp script.

I mean I may be reading it wrong but EP1's script is 851994 bytes long, with each sign taking 2 B it gives us 425997 - I think that includes scripting like BGM, BG or sprite changes as well as sound effects played, so I'd cut up to 50k (and that's very liberal, I haven't looked at Umineko's script in some time so I don't remember how much do those take)
Also according to that EP7 is actually the shortest, followed by 2, 6 and only then 1 (8 notwithstanding because there's not enough data, I don't think it's shorter though)

Well, according to some nip (screenshot since the url kept being flagged as spam), onikakushi is around 200k and Minagoroshi is 400k. I don't think Episode 1 was anything close to Minagoroshi size but I may be wrong.
If those numbers are correct, that means we have quite a big serving in term of wrold building and character introduction + usual Ryu's shenanigans.

Maybe I'm just a naive idiot but I could have sworn when first revealed everything indicated that it'd be dropped as a whole package and now when I go to check in on it on steam it's labeled "Part 1".

But it's disappointing to learn that Saku, which is supposed to be the ultimate release, won't either. Couldn't Ryukishi find a way to preserve it? The rain being animated, instead of just a static image, really added to the atmosphere.

It's the latest in a long chain of ports/forks of ONScripter, and you can see that it's maintained by chronotrig (WH guy) on the ponscr.readme.txt in the demo's folder. Pretty sure it's the same thing used for the Steam versions. The port it was based from didn't have that feature for some reason and it seems it was really hard to implement with how everything was set up so I guess they gave up. It's open source anyways so theoretically anyone could contribute to it and they would probably use that as an update if it was something as significant as the animation stuff, but if nobody did that probably means it really is that hard to implement it.
A more sane solution would just be scrapping NScripter altogether since it's shit and rewriting everything in another engine like Ren'py, and that probably does have something to do with 07th expansion themselves and how the guy that does the scripting just won't learn something new.
Higurashi for Steam was made in a custom engine for example.

exactly. I also really liked Higurashi and Umineko's quiet, isolated setting (a small isolated village and a sealed off island) and it seems like Ciconia won't have that and instead be more open, what with the characters flying around at crazy speeds.

they also have a lot of fancy cg for the battles, and they went into great detail for them, which makes me fear that more of them will come. I liked the logic confrontations in umineko but this is something else and I hope it changes to fit wtc-style mystery more.

What I can't understand or assimilate is the meta-narrative. Not because I can't theorize, but because I have two conflictual interpretations which can't be true simultaneously. And they don't quite fit the facts alone.

There's the obvious VR narrative with the meat grinder putting people into VR and the obvious question during the feast and evil programs and Kero. But this answers nothing about the Order of the Lost Ark, nothing about the Three Kings, nothing about the bizarre time travel elements interspersed through those plotlines. And what was Miyao programmed for? For what reason? Purpose? What the fuck?

Then there's the time travel/alien objects narrative. The Lost Ark have a time machine? They want to use it? The Orders find objects of powers, "Wisdoms", possibly alien in origin, but in fact linked to Miyao? But what of the VR meta-narrative then?

Add to that that I have not the faintest idea of the goals of the "Players". Which, at least, I think I have a decent grasp of: Mother/Kero, Father, 3Kings, Seshat, Jestress.

I think that what Ryukishi meant by not being a player this time. Sure. Miyao is not a player. He's a piece, that is obvious. And there are players, but I don't understand about what they want.

I found the focus on gender identity and the way it's being presented somewhat off-putting at first (personally, I don't believe genderdysphoria is any more of an identity than being manic-depressive is - people just have a tendency to fall in love with their problems and identify themselves by them), but seeing how it's being developed I think Ryukishi is doing a good job presenting how the discourse on sexuality functions in progressive circles in our society, just like in Umineko he allowed his characters voice and act out their traditionalist values (with the order of succession that places some people firmly at the bottom based on factors that are thoroughly out of their control, Eva missing out on being the next successor because of her sex, trying to find a suitable wife for her son and so on).
Basically, for now I'm willing to trust that he'll develop these themes honestly and present the advantages and problems of different ideologies, social conventions and political stances without trying to sugarcoat anything.

I agree, but I think this is actually what makes his writing style controversial. He doesn't really attempt to justify his perspective, so if it doesn't gel with someone, they tend to get really mad. For example, I think if he had tried to make a convincing case for his perspective on the truth, people would have reacted a lot less negatively. I think both the inference and conclusion here are flawed. Ruroni Kenshin doesn't have much in the way of pedophilia, and the little that's in there it's portrayed as a bad thing(and the underaged individuals tend to be like 16, or 17). Likewise, tons of directors whose films have nothing to do with pedophilia or rape, have raped children. And conversely, tons of people whose films contain dark messages, are saints IRL.

There's not always a correlation, or even an inverse correlation, or even a connection, between the themes in a work and the creator's relationship.

Maybe it's just how I read it, but how everything was worded, how the news was reported, and how the characters were reacting to the chaos. It didn't seem like 1/3 people would have died from it all, it's like the number just came out of nowhere.
