Lowest effort medium is LNs.

VNs are several times longer. You have to plan the story out along multiple routes and design a system whereby player choices effect the course of the story. There are tons of CGs and character sprites to draw, not to mention backgrounds.

With LNs, you write something a fifth of the length and throw in a few anime-style sketches along the way and you're done.

can someone explain the practical difference, if any, between finishing a VN versus reading 20% of 5 different VNs, assuming the same number of characters read in both cases? what difference would this make in one's language acquisition? i can't think of a single one. the latter might even be better due to exposing you to more writing styles and more varied vocabulary

The first parts of a book or LN are the easiest because the story hasn't really started happening, it's mostly introducing the scene and characters. If you finish a VN (or anything) then you see how the elements tie together. It's more complex to follow a narrative.

How do I go from only comprehending single words to actually comprehending whole sentences.
Don't get me wrong I can understand small simple sentences just fine, but if I hear a longer sentence I just tend to understand single words.
Is it because I don't do sentence cards, but only single word cards?

words to chunks to sentences, this is how all languages break down. everytime you read something, string two to four words together and see if you can understand that set of words as a collective. then move on to the next chunk. every long sentence is just a bunch of chunks strung together

I always wondered, a lot of anons recommend making cards from animes or VN, doesn't that end up in you talking like cartoons?
A lot of anime characters repeat desu, desu wa, kana, etc every sentence, over the long run doesn't that ruin your speech.
When i was learning Portuguese i consumed a lot of cartoons and stuff , this ended up in people telling me i 'sound like a cartoon'

maybe it's because i can't understand shit but i can see episode 19 of demon slayer being considered good, but definitely not great. it had good art, animation, and music toward the end but the plot itself was medicore and boring.

maybe there's details revolving around what tanjiro remembered about his father and that "fire dance" that would make it better if i picked up on it. that's the most hyped an episode has been so i think all that can be expected from this series is quick pacing and good animation. it's definitely nowhere near the shounen greats yet.

The latter. Kanji are much easier to learn the better you are at Japanese.

Trying to memorize them all right from the beginning, while possible, is extremely tedious and pretty much necessitates the use of memory hacks (mnemonics) to give you any hope of making them actually stick in your memory past the short term. Rote from scratch is all but impossible.

It's also worth keeping in mind that taking kanji on from the beginning can delay your start in the language by as long as half a year (possibly even longer, depending how slow you go), and it's very doubtful that you will end up later down the line learning Japanese 6 months faster to compensate for that investment.

Finish the main route of Leyline which should happen in the next couple weeks. Then I'll look into some LNs that are considered reasonably difficult but not super difficult. I think The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya fits the bill because I heard something about it having run-on sentences that I'll get lost in if my grammar isn't great (which it isn't), but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Once I finish that, I feel the largest hurdles will be behind me and the rest will come down to endurance.

Portuguese has some similar words (meme Latin words that ended everywhere), but things like tenses, modes, etc work pretty differently. The phonetics are very different too.
My biggest problem was with sentence subjects tho, in Portuguese you just drop the subject if it can be inferred from context, but English obviously works differently.

Is it essentially saying that the　昔の人は長生きできないのだろうか is a common thought (vs a direct quote) that the second half of the sentence is in response to? I.e. Any dumbfuck can use a bilingual dictionary to translate h-manga, but it might not be as quick, precise, or smooth as what an experienced translator could attempt to do (which, yes, even a dumbfuck could become if given enough time).
Btw translating stuff doesn't make you better at processing language in a straightforward manner. It instead forces you to think in terms of equivalencies instead of true meaning, which makes lots of little linguistic details and nuances disappear.

It took me longer to learn hiragana and katakana than it did to learn the jouyou kanji, so don't worry. They'll somehow eventually stick after reading them and writing them down lots of times. Instead of focusing on trying to remember each one on its own, think of trying to remember words written in them. Write something down on a notebook and see if you can recall its meaning or pronunciation a week later.

When it comes to something like current weather or political beliefs/divisions in a certain country, it really wouldn't be as much a matter of hypothesizing/theorizing on stuff as much as it'd be to ask about an actual state of affairs.
It really doesn't matter what I as a Westerner can think of Japanese politics or the division between liberalism and conservatism, because I would merely be projecting my primarily Euro-American understanding of these words unto a country whose contemporary history I barely know about. What they'd call far left or far right would probably not correspond to what I'd call far left or far right, mostly because political movements, parties, etc. arise in accordance to perceived social problems and in opposition to other politicians/rulers/etc.
