It kinda sucks that new readers of Umineko won' get the whole experience of being suckered into Antifantasy vs Fantasy vs Mystery and all that horseshit since Ryukishi's letter of challenge to the reader isn't likely to be read by new fans.

From my observations though, newbies end the series with a lot less bitterness compared to readers who finished it when the theorizing was going strong.

07th Anons, I've been wanting to get into Higurashi for a while, and after lurking for a while I still have some doubts regarding the versions and if I should start reading them or wait.
The main problem, Mangagamer scheadule, honestly, I started to get interested in Higurashi 1 year ago, I tought the game would be done releasing the new versions of the chapters by now, but I was wrong.
So I was thinking in reading chapters 1-7 from the new release and then reading chapter 8 from the old one (I believe this is the old one:(https://erogedownload.com/downloads/higurashi-when-they-cry-kai-matsuribayashi/)) and then re-reading when chapter 8 of the new one comes out.
But this also comes with problems, because If I'm not wrong, the old releases changed a lot of the effects, the bgm and the grammar is not the best (tought I also heard that the new one has a lot of typos)
So I don't know if I should wait or read the old version.
Another problem I have is with the "recent" change of some of the tracks in the new release, is there a way to restore the music? (A friend of mine says that you can use 07th-mod to do it, but I checked their website and they don't say anything about music on the features).
Why does everything has to be so complicated? (or maybe I'm just useless)

I think your shading/contrast is a little too much strong, it's especially more noticeable in the pic where you put them up against the ps3 backgrounds.

Overall nice work, I kinda like the face on your older art more though.

Also what program do you use? If you're using photoshop I'd really recommend ditching that piece of shit. It's good for editing, not drawing. Though many use it to draw, they don't realize just how much they're limiting themselves. Brushes are repeated stamps instead of actually generated strokes. Corel Painter is top tier choice followed by Clip Studio Paint.

There is a theory that Sayo took the identity of a real human Erika (in an alternate universe-like Lion) and the other ideal woman kid Battler had- an active, intellectual and mystery focused person. This Erika was a mix up of Sayo and the dead human Furdo Erika believed to be on the island and Bern just found the game piece on the game board, not by miracle. I don't think it'll be too jarring of a transition if you decide to make it or at least try it out. CSP is really close to PS I feel, hardest part would be finding the closest brushes to what you typically use. CSP also has a built in poser tool that would be helpful.

Corel Painter on the other hand would probably be about the same for normal use and just using brushes as is, but overall the transition would take longer as you'd be having to get a grasp on just how much more you can do.

Yet, Ryukishi signed the contract with Mangagamer, and six months after that the EP 7 and EP 8 manga came out with Shkanontrice. At that time, it was the DEEN who was trying to cashgrab some VN for the anime market. With 0 budget, just trying to get some cash with some ready made niche fans.

Thus they produced the FSN adaptation, which was a massive artistict failure, but still sold. DEEN was content. Then DEEN contacted Ryukishi and told him they wanted to do the same with Higurashi. They did. Still 0 budget, horrible animation, completely butchered plot. Still, the anime Higurashi sold very well, DEEN was extra-content. After that they tried the same shit with Umineko, but it was more difficult to hide the incompetence and the lack of budget with that one.

The result of that clusterfuck is that the Higurashi anime has zero budget, is rushed as fuck, forget entire plotlines, is tonally inconsistent, and is only regarded fondly by people because the source material is that good. Important scenes are butchered without regard with the source material, it's a miracle the story is still somewhat understandable. The Higurashi anime is FSN tier: as in, only ever sold because of the good ideas of the original story, even when those ideas were barely cognizable.

I don't think all of the people working on the anime were dispassionate about it. I think most of them were though, which is understandable, giving its history. Higurashi was a very niche game at that time, created by a virtual unknown. The budget was figuratively 300 yens + sandwiches, with no expectations that Higurashi would reach any kind of success. If you watch the credits, B-Teams were called in, which is something giving that DEEN is mostly B-Teams to begin with. The first season adapts the first 6 (six!) episodes in an extremely rushed pace, with a particular care done to scenes of gore and torture, given the expectation that's what would sell. And the budget is there to give you an idea it wasn't expected to really sell well, to begin with.

There were no particular cares given to the source material. It was cashgrab from the get go. A second rate adaptation for shock values, trying to tap into a niche hit. Which was exactly what happened to both FSN and Umineko.

Yet, it is difficult to dislike the studio. The sad truth is that DEEN did more for Higurashi than any other animation studio would have been able at the time. Only DEEN was crazy and uncaring enough to adapt a bizarre VN with a shoestring budget in order to popularize it. They butchered the story, the characters, the tone, but they popularized Higurashi like crazy. That's at least something, I guess.

IIRC from interviews, DEEN contacted Ryukishi through a Nasu backchannel, i.e: "they were willing to adapt my bizarre vn on shoestring budget, now they want yours, go for it". Remember that at that time Nasu weren't a billionaire swimming in golden gatcha money and Ryukishi was a weird guy from comicket, unknown to western audience. Ryukishi was at that time grateful to accept any kind of adaptation contract.
